As a retired mailman...35 years...I love the idea of a pull off where I could access the box and not worry about someone plowing into me.
@texastoy88
@texastoy88 10 ай бұрын
I had done this with my mail box, however the state came behind me and ripped my mailbox and expensive decorative post out and thrown in my front yard to move the mailbox 18" from the edge of the paving because the rock area in front of my mail box was not "Paved". We live on a very busy road that travels in and out of my town, and wanted to leave some space, but I guess the state saw it differently.

I've watched many of The Morgan's videos, and I agree 100%. The 1 out I will grant the ranters - assuming it is not the same few who rant all the time - is they may have had a bad day. However, that is not a valid reason for going off on someone else's channel.

Man this video hit close to home! Had an issue with a permit a couple years ago. I did end up getting a permit for a deck that I was extending off an existing one to surround our new hot tub. It was kind of a bittersweet situation, I guess you could say. The code enforcement officer was called by one of my neighbors and he came out to the house and spoke with me, he was a real nice guy, I invited him in to get a closer look at the project but he didn't want anything to do with my son's chocolate lab, lol! Since I was building off an existing structure I didn't think it would be an issue needing a permit, and come to find out the code enforcement officer didn't really care either, he was just doing his job. He could have been a real jerk and made me stop and file all the paperwork, blah, blah, blah. He just said next time your in town just come by and fill out the application, we'll just give it to you. A funny thing about this whole thing is that the officers secretary is a high school classmate of mine who had been following my whole project through Facebook and was absolutely loving it and later on even asked me if I'd help her build one when she was ready for it. Immediately after she got the call from my neighbor, she tried to contact my wife who was at work at the time and couldn't answer her cell phone. The secretary didn't have my cell number or she would have called me. My wife and I are both healthcare workers and have done nothing but work our tails off during the pandemic. After seeing so much misery during the pandemic, we decided we needed a little oasis to relax, so we bought the hot tub and while waiting for it to come we excavated a "pit" so that we could have the top of the tub at about the same height as our deck.... Anyway, the whole project turned out beautiful. Besides needing more common sense, some people just need to mind there own business!

Mike, I've watched you for a long time. My wife and I are cultivating property in Oswego, NY very similar to yours. I have the same experience with authorities. People don't seem to get that rural life is a bit different. Loved your comment, "I am the local authority on my property". That same phrase has come out of my mouth many times. You're my hero with the grace and patience you exercise with some of these comments. Glad to hear there are still schools in this world that haven't been infected. I don't generally comment on videos but I have to say, I have fond memories of your part of the world. My mom was from a huge family in Dubois and we travelled there every year for the big family reunion. My parents had 7 kids to entertain so driving around the countryside was always a hit. It's fun to recognize some of the sights you visit. I've seen that giant elk more times than I could count. God bless you and your wonderful family.

As a guy that was born and raised in a big city and now living in the suburbs it took some time for me to adjust to not having to ask for permission on everything I do on my property. I'm sure I looked like a basket case to my neighbors when conversations about home projects led to me asking them how much a permit would cost and where would I have to get it. They would just shake their heads and grin. Sure there a certain things that I wouldn't do without having the proper permits but I haven't had any major projects I. Some time. Anyway, I guess I was so used to "staying in my box/cage" that I didn't know how to act when the barrier wasn't there anymore. That was decades ago. Now I'm the one shaking my head and grinning at all the new and younger homeowners. Freedom is a beautiful thing! Love the content, God Bless!

Mike, when I was about eleven I learned to ride an ex racehorse. I was given an old saddle and bridle and told to see what I could do. The horse was a bay 16.2 hands gelding and was also an ex steeplechaser, (jumper) After a year of falling off I learned to jump him myself and gallop alongside the roadway on the grass verge. I didn't think I was unique in anyway but just a country kid who loved horses. The horse roamed free on government land but would always come when I called him. (My father was the commandant of the SCE, services corrective establishment. (Military prison.) in Ardmore, New Zealand. Not far from where I lived was the Ardmore aerodrome which is a small rural airport. One day I raced a cessna down the side of the runway as it began it's takeoff run. The man in the tower chased me on a pushbike but I easily outrun him on Golonzo and jumped a drainage ditch so he couldn't follow. I was 12 years old. I saw myself as just a normal country kid. Eva sounds like a fun kid, all the best, tell her to have fun. Life is too short to wrap yourself in cotton wool.

Love your comments on "authority". My late father-in-law in Canada operated like you. I may not have all the details exact but close. He built his own house out in the country. A utility pole was right beside his driveway, and the house was less than a 100' from the road. He spoke to the utility people about putting a dusk to dawn light on the pole. They told him what he would have to pay for them to install one and the monthly charge. He just ran outdoor grade of romex to the pole and installed his own light. They told him he couldn't do that. Too late, it was already done and is still there today. Second story- he owned the land across the road, with a small 2 room house about 150 yards up the road. He rented it out. Well, the well pump went out, so he decided to run a water line from his well up to the little house which would have to cross the road. He talked to the guys at the highway garage about putting up a barricade at the intersections on both sides to detour the traffic while he dug a trench across the road to bury this water line. They told him he couldn't do that. By the way, this was a busy paved road. The next day, he called them on the phone and announced they needed to bring out some barricades because he already had the trench dug and it would be a little time before he could get the line laid and the trench filled back in. So, they did and also came back the next day to patch in the blacktop. No one said a word to him. That is the kind of guy he was. Don't tell him what he couldn't or wasn't allowed to do on his property. Now, the road wasn't his, but if they weren't going to cooperate he went ahead with what he needed to do.

Like you I'd never buy a house that is under an HOA. A friend of mine had to fight his HOA to put up a flag pole. I told him I asked my HOA, I looked in the mirror and asked myself 🙂 if I could put mine up. He now doesn't live in an HOA any more and absolutely loves the freedom he has to do what he want's with his property.

Mike, I'm Ken a 74 year old from North Idaho, love your channel, content and comments. I agreed with everything you stand for. As a 5 year old, born in Covington KY and lived in Florence KY my family had to move to North Idaho when I was 5 because of my hay fever. Personally I think Idaho (especially North Idaho) is the most free state in the USA (I know there will be plenty of others that will disagree, but that's ok!). We lived for 8 years in a HOA neighborhood, we vowed never again. Our oldest son, his wife and their 2 grade school kids live with us on 4 acres that we went together and bought 2 1/2 years ago. We have about 20 goats and about 15 chickens. We feel blessed to have enough space to spread out and don't hear our neighbors (unless they have a chainsaw running). We have a Kubota BX2601, it's small but we've been able to a lot with it so far. Keep up the great work brother!!!

As a multi-jurisdictional design/build contractor for 40 years I understand and appreciate your view on permits, which are just another of MANY hidden taxes. @@probuilder961 If they are jerks about it, I learned years ago to hand them a notepad and have ask them write down their exact objection along with the address where they receive their personal mail…which always generates the question “why”…and the answer…”so my attorneys know where to send the summons” and an explanation that case law, nationwide, has determined that modification of Internantional Building Codes by local authorities beyond published code, must go through an addendum process with IBC and that building officials, town councils, aldermen, supervisors, mayors, etc. are, in fact, in violation of that very code and individually responsible for damages. I further explain that there are “x” number of $50 to $150/hr trades idle and that I started the meter when I handed them that pad…and that their jurisdiction could ONLY pay to defend them if they were acting within the boundaries of law…published code…and that our privately hired inspector preceded and passed his inspection just before you arrived…and he’s a licensed engineer…and he was here for over an hour. It isn’t a bluff but I do try to take time during the process to sit down with building officials to head off such a scenario. I’ve only had to do it twice…so far.

Greetings from Colorado! This is a Butler boy from years ago and I grew up being from western PA. Need to help you out on your discussion in this episode. Sometimes you speak of which only what you have known and this time I don't agree with your assertion on HOAs and the Township governance. Having lived from New England, to Montana, to the west coast, Nebraska, in Washington D.C. and now settled in Colorado, the growth and development of our country has changed, sorry to say. Major point, HOAs are of great value to what is being built nowadays in communities. Major goal of our HOA and I must state I am the President of it, is to maintain the neighborhood and home value of all owners and to do this Covenants are necessary. You live on 70 acres or so and can control your land to an extent. But having seen the growth on all the farms around Cranberry, and I have a cousin living in the area, is reshaping lives, families and neighbors. For what homes cost today you need to ensure that the homes are not impacted by unrestricted/uncontrolled development or homeowners who buy the home next door and set up a meth lab. With laxed morals of today we need to do as much as we can to maintain and improve our major investments with homes being the biggest. Your wooded lot is a great place but you have stated development is right around the corner. Your comments encouraged going your own way. That goal is from the past and will change and when it does, what you have will be gone. I wish this was not so. But I caution your personal expression such as this episode's comments. People need to work together for everyone's sake. Just my thoughts and I will continue to watch your site.

When I was a kid in 1959 I went to Camp Ridgecrest for boys and was elected by my counselors to become a Little Chief. On of the tests to become a Little Chief was to run up a local mountain and build a fire at the top with only one match in a rain storm. I succeeded and became a Little Chief with the Indian name, “Wagging Tongue.” When I came back several years later as a Counselor I became Chief Wagging Tongue. I did not have any kind of fire starter. I used small broken branches from a cedar tree that I found on the mountain. I was not a novice at building a fire, I had been a Cub and Boy Scout for years, so I knew how to build a fire. Still do, but I use Joy Juice (kerosene) these days.

I'll give you another example. My mom and dad built a mother-n-law apartment on our property. My dad went to pull the permit. They charged him $3000 for the permit. On top of that, they charged him another $2500 for an environmental impact. Absolutely insane how much over reach towns, states and the federal government can be. Another story my dad told me 30 years ago, I think you'll like. A friend of his moved out west. I believe it was Montana, but I could be wrong. He decided to build a 2 car garage on his own as he was a carpenter. Coming from RI, he went to the town hall to ask about getting a building permit. The response he got from the town hall, was permit, why would you need a permit to build on your own land.

There are safety devises attached to most mechanical equipment. These devises could save your Family or your home or your pets and more. Most homeowners don't realize the importance of these devises. This is the reasons why you need permits. Inspections make sure they are installed properly.

@@4BikeMikeI live in a country where the inspection or permits to install hot water systems is unheard of. There are never reports of hot water systems hurting people through malfunction. The difference is these systems must be installed by licensed plumbers. Why is a permit needed if a competent tradesman will do the work? Does a bureaucrat know more than someone who does the work?

I know this is an older video but my husband and I are just now watching it. I wanted to comment because our kids played “Senior assassins” in high school as well. I remember saying that I couldn’t believe they still let them do it in today”s crazy culture but they all made so many great memories while playing. It’s a great way to get them out of the house. Our oldest daughter was one of the last three standing when she was “assassinated” by some kid laying in my yard in a camouflage hunting suit😂. Let those comments roll off. I’m glad your daughter is making good HS memories.

Regarding HOA restrictions, I remember one of my best gotcha moments after we built our house. We had been fortunate to get a deal of a culdesac lot that the previous owner could not build on since the builder of the house on the adjacent lot had built in the wrong spot and the property line had to be adjusted to conform with the neighborhood covenants. The plan that we had was small enough to fit and then some and we got a deal. The following year I had cleared out 50 or so osage orange trees and was using a Bobcat to clear an old cattle run when the retired judge who had owned all the property for this development came over to see what was going on. I told him of my plans for the pool and privacy fence around the yard when he informed me that he would have to approve any fence before it went up in accordance with the covenants. I informed the judge that when the previous builder had screwed up and my lot and my neighbor's lot had to be renumbered the new numbers did not fall in the number range stipulated in the covenants. "So you see judge by the letter and numbers in the law I can do anything I want to with this lot without your approval." I thought the judge might have a stroke right there and then.

Great video and appreciate your honesty. I work in public safety and people nonsense is staggering and how they want other people to behave because "they" said so. I also can relate with having great neighbors and when they call for help 99 percent of the time I am right there helping. My tractors or backhoe at the ready usually plowing snow or moving dirt, horse manure etc. "Common" sense I refer to now as "Uncommon" sense as short-sighted bubble wrap people seem to dominate in so many ways. Keep up the great work and be safe.

I owned a Vermeer BC1000 tree chipper, it was able to eat logs 12" in diameter, did not matter how long, and gives a great chip - mulch product for other uses. As it pulls in the logs you have the ability to stop the feed roller and add some vine or small material, the engage the feed roller, pulling everything in. But I do see you point with using the heavy equipment also and not having to touch any of the wood. If I lived near by, Id be happy to come by and help out

Growing up we played bicycle tag and we lived in a small town so the limits are the limits of our games. We allowed everyone to play. This was in Illinois and we used our entertainment as a form of exercise. This was an old coal mining town. We didn't worry about problems because if someone needed help they would get some kids to help, no money involved.

G' mornin Mike! I gotta say, you have really kept busy since I started watching you a while ago (Remembering all the negative posts of how you were crazy to quit your "day job"!) Most of the negative comments just show "Common sense isn't too common anymore!" Growing up in the more open spaces of townships, neighbors usually get along with each other and respect each other! An HOA has always seemed restrictive to me, and would never think of wanting to live in that type of situation!

I agree with the talking it out about the local permits, I was under the impression that where I wanted to build a garage on property I would be too close to property lines to build it. The Code enforcement officer looked at the Google photos of the properties involved. Long story short he told me that the total cost with building and inspection would be $30.00. Talking it out was a good thing. I live not too far from your area (will not disclose where to protect your privacy.) Great videos keep up the good work.

We would get along just fine Mike. I will never live in a HOA or on a community water system. I bought this house 30 years ago, it has public water but also had a well. Great we can use that for the garden. We closed and the Health inspector was here with the previous owner filling in my well with concrete.... It was a "health hazard" pouring concrete down the well wasn't apparently.

Hi Mike! I fully understand your position on permits or moving your mailbox. You are so fortunate to live in the Township where you live. Here, it is absolutely required to have a permit for just about everything we do. Also, the postal service has the absolute say as to where your mailbox is placed. I envy you having the ability to talk through things with your Township as our County isn't at all flexible no matter how much we talk with them, a totally liberal area that wants nothing to do but to control everything we do. Oh, and as far as the "game" Eva and her classmates play, outstanding. It really seems to keep them thinking and causes goodwill among them. Fantastic, keep up the good work and if from time to time you need a permit so be it. Thanks for sharing and I wish I was your neighbor! J.R.
