So glad to see no significant damage to your buildings and equipment. There's no predictability of Mother Nature. The EF-4 tornado that came through Newnan, GA two years ago (March of 2021) came within 1/2 mile of my property. I had zero trees down, yet others had their entire homes wiped out. I know y'all are thankful and sympathetic to those less fortunate.

Forester from Wisconsin here. We had a straight-line windstorm similar to how this sounds back in the summer of 2019. Loggers across most of the central and northeast part of the state are still working on salvage jobs from that one 4 hour storm. That aside, windstorms like this are how forests have naturally regenerated themselves for centuries. Natural disturbance is the term for this and wildfires are another example. Certain tree species thrive off of large scale disturbances like this and are usually the first to repopulate the forest, such as popple, birch, and red maple, (not sure if you have much of those in your area or not). As scary and powerful as nature can be, it also manages to maintain biodiversity on the landscape. Just thought I would share. Glad to hear you guys had no structural damage or injuries as a result!

Wow! That's a lot of trees down. On the bright side, you will have firewood for many years to come. The bad news is your clearing project is now going to be 5X the amount of work cutting, clearing and burning brush piles. Good luck and glad everything and everyone are safe and sound.

Hiya Mike and Melissa and KIN! You had some fun down there in Pennsylvania, we had ANOTHER 13" of snow on our hills here in our neck of the woods Alaska... got a couple weeks more of this at our elevation... its still -25 to -30 at night (20-21 hrs. during this time of year still) and -5 to -15 during the day (if you can call it day)... Should be getting more daylight time around the 15th and will gradually gain 8-16 minutes more daylight per day there after until we hit twilight at midnight! We used to get avalanches (before I was hatched in 1948), it stopped because my father stepped up the inter face of our inner valley every 300' up and cut into the hills 600' leveled completely around the valley...At 1800' up, he then leveled it off and had a gradual incline up to 3200 ft. creating the now deep bottom lake we have today... At 4000' its again cut in at a 10 degree cut into the last 600-1950 elevation around the valley angled do toward the north end of our valley where it flows down to the lake below every level angles towards the northern hill (mountain at 6320') That hill/mountain is shared with my eldest daughters In-laws (her mother in law her father in-law passed a few years back) but that's another rant... anyways there is a cleft in the 3rd hill on the eastern side of the valley at 3200' in which we have our first pumping station to pump water down into the eastern water basin (7 holding ponds for our tree plots and our summer food plots and water for our neighboring homesteaders)...This is primarily for our fisheries for our lake, but is also to keep the basin from flooding like in the past and then going arid due to VERY LITTLE rainfall... SNOW is our friend when its not trying to bury us...as always Family, Faith, Freedom Always...Keep yourselves safe from them wackos y'all have!

Mother nature has a weird way of dealing with things.☄ Sure glad your home and family are well. I was 19 years old when the ice storm of 1998 hammered our community and the Ottawa valley and proceeded east devastating lower Quebec and upper new York. People perished literally freezing to death. Sad, but true how it helps to bring people back to primordial instincts with resolve and neighborly concern in mind. Keep your chin up ✌. Y'all certainly don't strike me as folks who would be deterred from a jag of wind. God Bless and stay safe. My son and I look forward to your positive content. ❤from 🇨🇦

M & M, I have been a part of your KZbin channel for a long time now. I feel some of your loss there in your woods. Kate and I have some woods we use as a camp. I feel affected by wind damage or damage at the hands of emerald ash borers. All this being said, I am so glad nobody was injured. I do have a couple of saws, would be happy to donate some time to help in clean up efforts.

Here in Northeast PA we had a microburst go through our 80 acre woodlot 3 years ago and uprooted 100s of trees: Oaks, maples , cherry and 100 foot white pines. It took us 3 years, and the purchase of a Kubota U35-4, to open up all our trails. Easily 700 cord of firewood. Purchased a MS661 to tackle a few massive white oak (40 inch DBH). Thank goodness for your equipment which will help immensely. Glad to hear no one was hurt. Will open up pockets for new growth at least.

If I harvested as many trees as Mike I'd just get a harvesting head on a piece of heavy equipment and be done with it. No need to fell trees manually when there's equipment that can do it quicker and safer.. just my thoughts on the subject.

Glad y'all are safe. Linear winds can be as bad as twisters because they blow for longer in a single direction. It would be interesting to know how wide that storm was because, if the wind with you was from the south, somewhere to to the west of you, trees are likely blown down in the opposite direction.

Mike and Melissa, Looks like you've got a little, make that a lot work ahead of you, for quite awhile.😓.😓.😓(I don't think that you will have any trouble creating content for some time to come.) I'm amazed that the Mini-Cabin endured the storm, especially when you consider the size of the trees lost, in comparison toe the size of the posts on the cabin, plus the surface area catching the wind. Just think how much worse it would have been if the trees were leafed out, the added resistance would have been devastating. The power of the wind is truly amazing. Seems like the southeast has really seen some tough times with all of the storms this year. My heart goes out to all of those families adversely affected by the weather this year. Makes me wonder why anyone would continue to rebuild in those conditions. We've seen similar wind damage here in Oregon, in the past decade, however that's not usually the case. 💥💥💥Big shout out to Hunter.... This must have been very upsetting for him, along with the loss of the power. 😕😧😱

Yes indeed you now have 4 to 5 years firewood with what you had purchased and downed from the wind storm. about 3 years ago we had a Derecho wind storm and lost about 15 big trees on my small 2 acres either topped or ripped out of the ground very similar to what you have there. The hardest part is removing trees that are hung up in tops of other trees. Had to pull trees out with tractor to git them on the ground. Are power was out for 5 days. Glad no one was hurt.

I am in SE Ohio, and we got the winds, but not near the tree damage this time. I got all of mine a year ago with and ice storm and wind. The cherry trees and some of the tall pines do not do well if the ground is saturated down some and then the winds come. The area near the mini cabin seems to be a small valley leading up to the ridge top so that may have acted like a funnel to concentrate the winds even more there. One thing I learned the hard way is that some of those tangles of several trees down can have some really bad side loading and the tree trunk can pop sideways when cut. Just got bruised but if I had been closer would have probably broken my leg. Tangle downed trees have some weird and unpredictable stresses. I have gotten to cut most of the way through on some and doing the release cut with my electric pole saw so I am further away if something unpredictable happens. I sell a little firewood, but like you I won't need any logs for quite some time.

During Hurricane Juan, I had straight winds go through a "small gully" and knock the trees down like match sticks. The topography most likely contributed to accelerated winds. The June 7th storm here in Ohio did more damage than that on our farm. It put hundreds of trees down. I've taken 71 logs to the saw mill to sell. There are another 20 to go. All of them 25 to 27 inch poplar trees, straight as an arrow. As soon as the woods drys out enough to get in it, I'll be taking them to the saw mill. All the rest are firewood. This weekend and last weekend's storm only took a few down. One door on the barn was blown off. I fixed it. re-hung it, and it got blew off again with the storm this weekend. If you loves trees like I do, every tree down, brings some sorrow! We feel your pain! Lee

We caught the tale end of that storm, got straight line winds, over 80 mph, neighbors all around our house lost huge trees, some over 60 feet tall. Luckily no one was injured and just minor damage to a few homes. Not sure how my silver maples survived? You’ve got your work cut out for you cleaning up all the downed trees.

Glad everyone is safe and no damage to your buildings. Good luck with the cleanup. Wood for years. Stay safe.

Mike as bad as it is just be thankful it happened sooner rather than later, when the trees had lots of foliage to catch the wind, it would have been a lot worse in my opinion ! Everybody is safe most importantly !!

Hey Mike. When I lived in Vermont we had 33 acres. We had a devastating ice storm probably 15 years ago. I heated my house for about 3 years with tree tops and lim wood. After that 3 years I don’t think you could see any damage unless you really looked for it. Fear not. The forest will recover

You might want to look into a "big shot" for putting ropes in the high hangers and pulling them out. Search on any arborist site, sherrill trees or such. You'll want a few weights and some throw line. Really helps!

With everything that happened glad to hear you say how fortunate you were. The clean up will be a lot of work but you have the equipment and the expertise to handle it. Also coincidental how just last week you said you needed to "up your prep game." Good luck but I'm sure you'll handle it just fine 👍
