Rest in Peace, Dean Ford, and thank you for this endlessly beautiful song. I am 75 and have been listening to this song since I was a teenager. ❤️❤️❤️. How many people are listening to this song in 2023? IMHO the music of the 60s, 70s, and 80s, were the best.

Mr. Dean Ford came full circle when he made this rerecording of his classic song. His amazing vocals withstood the ravage of time that many are unable to duplicate. This song offers each one of us to reflect back on our own lives. As a 66 year old, I can remember when I was a young man thinking that life was forever. Now, I realize more clearly that life is only a fleeting moment and each one of us are temporary in this world. We only have a certain number of days to leave something positive in this world before our time is up. Thank you Mr. Dean Ford for your contributions to music and the love you shared with us to appreciate the little time we have. We are all going home when our time is up. Enjoy the stay while you still can. God Bless and Rest in Eternal Peace Mr. Dean Ford. ❤️

I couldn't agree more. I am going to be 62 in April. I likely don't have much longer on this earth. It took a chronic illness to illuminate the truth about my life. My failures. The opportunities I had to have a wife and family. All gone now. It took this illness to make me see my shortcomings as a human being. Life can be beautiful, but also harsh. Thanks again.

It was 16 years ago tonight that we lost our son Christopher, our hearts are still heavy as we remember him every day, and miss his smiling face, but your thoughts and good wishes (which i have read every one, again tonight) help me through this night every year, with Dean and Joe's song always playing and comforting, and again everyones kind words. May whoever your God is, stay with you. Thank you all, Pete. 11 years ago today I lost my troubled son at just 21 years old, I've often found comfort in this song, and as I sit and write this with eye's full of tears, this version is the most beautiful and moving I have heard. And in between the young and the old years is where we also change physically, emotionally, spiritually and intellectually. We are gone so fast from this world and we don't get a do over so make sure you enjoy every single moment. It dawns on me right now of my own changes... Words can’t express the depth of sadness I feel every time I listen to this song. The original version helped me get through Vietnam. At that time I was feeling betrayed by our government and unanswered prayers were also not helping. Music became my crutch, and still is. The sadness became more profound when I heard that Dean Ford had passed away. Soon after reading about his death I realized I had employed him under his birth name (Thomas McAleese) as a driver for a limousine service I owned in Hollywood back in the early 80’s. He was an alcoholic and drank the booze from the bar in the limo and I simply fired him. I had no idea that this man and his music played such a huge part in helping me when I was emotionally crippled and feel like I missed a chance at paying him back and helping him in some way. The lyrics remain relevant today, R.I.P. Dean Ford.

I think you should rest easy, aguynamedave1, because Mr. Ford eventually overcame his addiction and enjoyed his life according to what I've read. And you did give him a helping hand by hiring him at a time when he just wasn't ready for it. This is the only song that brings the tears to me, even now at 68. I hadn't heard it for decades until today and, yup, it still brought the tears. Just a beautiful composition. Man we were so lucky to have music like this growing up. And new generations will have it on youtube. Peace to all. Rest in Peace Mr. Ford (McAleese).

I know the inevitable awaits us all. But my heart breaks when a God given talent is taken from us!! The song itself was like a prophesy fulfilled. The world has become a bad place in many ways but most of us don't want to die to escape it . We must do as Dean did and endure to the end and try to make it the best place we can. This was a very popular song with the troops in Vietnam and many of the lyrics seemed to sum up the war. Take me back to my old home, or take me back to the world. I am changing or should I say I have changed not for the better. The world is a bad place a bad place a terrible place to live, but I don't want to die. I was gone in 69 after spending three tours with the 1st Air Cav and the 101st Airborne. I don't think I ever really made it back home. Seems like yesterday

+George Seward George thank you for writing about how the troops in Vietnam loved this song and how the war was a very bad experience. I was not born yet then, but when we learned about the Vietnam War in high school I cried for two hours. I had to leave the classroom. It was too much. Then in 2012 I went to the War Memorial in Washington DC and it hit me deep in the gut and in the heart to see all those names printed up there, all the veterans coming back, soldiers from more recent wars. My heart is with soldiers. God bless you. It's very sad and this is a very sad very impressive song. I might cover it. In fact I will.

When the song came out (what seems like a hundred years ago) I never really heard what it says. I loved listening to it, because it was beautiful. (And still is. ) Up until about 5-6 years ago it was rare to be able to hear it on the radio. After I got to the computer age I listened to it quite alot. I am just short of 65 and just missed Vietnam. However, I did time in the Army so, I feel a huge connection to anything Vietnam. Sounds crazy I know. It is tough for me to watch a movie about the Vietnam war or listen to music from then. This song just tears me up to no end. I try not to cry but, can't help it. Even reading the comments on here had me crying as well. My wife and I drove from central florida to see The Wall in DC on a whim of mine about 1984. She had to hold me up. I just sobbed like a baby. Everytime I hear this song I cry my eyes out. I think it is a combination of getting older but, mainly I cry for all the est. 59,000 we lost in VietNam and not to mention all the ones that came back and what they had to deal with. This version is so powerful it is hard to explain but, I believe you guys know what I mean. Thank you Dean Ford. Thanks to all of you for letting me ramble on. I needed to do this for a long time. Music can transport us to the past and relive moments, happy or not, something that no machine has yet achieved! I understand the strong emotions it can bring you, Terry. Here in Brazil, we never associated this song with Vietnam, because this war did not affect us. We like music because it reminds us of the happy times of adolescence in the 70s. Thank you Joe, this song which brought tears from the opening notes. I stood apart from adolescent buddies about music. They preferred louded screaming guitar rifs, pounding drums with that thudding base line. I preferred thought provoking lyrics and melodic harmonies that had something to say. THIS song, with its painful reflective regrets, always touches my heart with a deep and powerful of release from all "...my sorrows" and I know that: "...I'm changing, arranging I'm changing I'm changing everything..." Everything inside me. There has been 50+ years since my searching teenage heart felt the impact of THAT song on my psyche, and in time the boy became a man who is not afraid of tomorrow anymore.

It is extremely unusual for a classic worldwide hit to have a updated version released decades later by one of the two original singer/writer/artists. Reflections of My Life has continued to haunt the airwaves with its soulful lyrics since its first release in 1970. The sheer power of this song led the United States service personal in the Vietnam War to adopt "Reflections" as their anthem. Dean Ford, Joe Tansin and John Gold have indeed managed to keep the spirit of this truly amazing song alive with their new updated version. The journey of this earthly life is full of personal memories and "Reflections of My Life" is certainly like a key opening the doorway. Beautiful song and a classic for the ages!

We're both in our 50s now...he'll be 60 in a few weeks....He emailed me today with the sad news of Dean Ford's passing, including links to this and the original version of the song. When we were kids we had a scratchy 45 of this song, that we may have borrowed from an old friend back then, and never returned. I probably still have it somewhere. We wore the record out playing it again and again. The song just doesn't bring back the memories of being young---it brings back the memory of how much we absorbed and loved the music growing up and how much we continue to do the same now. And to hear this version today....Dean...such an amazing performance. Heartbreaking. And Joe...thanks for an amazing arrangement with the cello and banjo and subtle production, that will live on. My brother and I both hope a song like this will continue to be discovered by the generations to come and we know it will. It's timeless. May Dean rest in peace. He gave us such an amazing gift.

@@rhondashinn1371 I was 21, loved flying, and the Country was beautiful, except for the bomb craters. Went back in 2014, and couldnt stay away. Traveled back about 10 times, married a wonderful Vietnamese woman, and now living in Hawaii. "Take me back to my own home".

This was one of the last songs my dad and I listened to before he died on New Year's Eve 2018. It, along with Incense and Peppermints by Strawberry Alarm Clock were his favorite songs. It's a bittersweet memory but one I'll cherish always.

It makes me wonder how can it be so long ago. I think I remember it best because it was a time when I felt alive! And not all the years working my life away.

Feel Comforted, Jennifer. It must hurt bad...my father's favourite Canadian song was Eve Of Destruction....one of my brother's favs was Incense And Peppermints but, what a Emotionally Sad song Reflections is...a person who cares...Has to let loose with a waterfall of tears...I'm doing some of that....and I'm only listening and reading yours and others words. I will have to Make Sure that, my favourite song is an up-beat happy tune so that, my 1 daughter will not be so choked up after my passing. Thanks...I never even considered this.

@@strickly60s78 the memory stings a bit but now it's something to look back on and reflect on, especially since now, at 51, I'm the oldest on my dad's branch of the family tree and there's only 8 of us left in total. As far as wanting to create only happy memories, that's what all of us should strive to do but sometimes it's good to have the tears fall. This song brought tears for me long before my dad died. A lot of songs hit me that way and that's ok. I still listen to them, still cherish them and sometimes it's good to have an "excuse" to do a little cleansing of the soul.

Hi Jennifer, Sorry....it is a bit late...I Agree with you fully...crying cleansing Is a healthy thing. You know....I focused on the songs so much, I didn't realize that Your Dad passed on New Year's Eve too! Truly Challenging To Endure . I can relate to you comment about ....shedding tears before a tragedy... I have that happen with the song A Whiter Shade Of Pale. My father died at 82....but, a Very long time ago....I would guess that your dad was around that age? If you don't reply...sorry, It Is Late.

@@strickly60s78 it's all good. I don't sleep much or well so I'm up at all hours. Dad had turned 71 just 11 days earlier. His birthday was Dec 20th, his mother's the 21st and his sister's, my favorite aunt who died April 15th 2021 (not covid related), was on Christmas Day. Ironically my aunt, who was a year younger than dad, also died at the age of 71.

Just amazing..only Dean has the sadness in his voice to make this song such a classic..it was a priviledge to work with him...a truley great singer in everyway

Absolutely agree. Got to know about this by subscribing to Joe Tansin - thank you Joe. Absolutely amazing alternative version - and by the original singer decades later - how awesome: This to me adds extra poignancy to the song, especially with the earlier years footage - it's as if Dean was singing the song for the first time at this stage in his life and looking back. This has got to be a very rare opportunity for a singer to be able to do this with a song and which has turned out to be another masterpiece. Obviously because Dean Ford still has one of those fantastic rare singing voices that has stood the test of time.

I remember you drumming with the band at the Cragburn in Gourock, Alan. I loved Marmalade, they were so melodic and a covers band I played with in the early 70s must have done around six or seven of the band's hit songs. Always liked your version of Hey Joe. Reflections was often requested, a great favourite with our audiences.

There should be a movie made about this beautiful soul's life. From musical dreams, to fanatical success, to losing it all to alcoholism, to finding his way back and becoming a regular Joe and good father, to sharing again his wonderful song in his twilight. His story should be told!
