Kinda like BC Rich. We live in a world where guitar making is more about the marketing than about the actual building (since most of the guitars are all built in the same 5 or 6 OEM factories), so no well established guitar brand like Dean is ever going to just go away completely, when it can be bought to market guitars that otherwise would stay under the radar.

Hey Max, I purchased one of the newer Dean models at the beginning of August, specifically the Kerry King signature import model. I purchased it specifically because it was 24 fret, had a Kahler instead of a Floyd, and came in a hard case. I absolutely love mine! It's built like an absolute tank, feels excellent (close to my ESP E-IIs or Ormsby Metal X in terms of build quality), not a single fit/finish imperfection, and decent specs. A local shop to me is also a Dean dealer, and they have a good selection of the upper end import models to try out. All of the ones I've put hands on (around 4-5 total) have been excellent so long as it is an Indonesian or Korean import model. From my experience having bought/played a lot of guitars this year, higher end LTDs (1000/Black Metal/Signature Series) feels pretty similar build quality-wise, whereas Jackson Pro-series models of commiserate prices tend to have more fit/finish problems, just as a reference point.

There's one aspect that I feel was left out: the overall quality of the guitars themselves. The only models I've had my hands on that didn't feel cheap, unwieldy, or need massive setups out of the box were 1) the several-thousand dollar custom-shop models or 2) some of the Rusty Cooley models. As someone who works in a music store, I'm constantly asked about what are good guitars for their respective prices. And because I always want to avoid returns, I'll point them to ESPs, Jacksons, or Schecters if they want the more extreme body styles. This has been going on long before the change in management at Dean. And I think that, similar to Gibson ironically, Dean was far too comfortable with relying on the brand-recognition and let far too many things slide when it came to general quality control.

The only drawbacks for me is the placement of the output jack (have to use a right angle jack plug or wear a guitar strap) when playing sitting down and I had to buy locking tuners because the guitar didn't come with them. The other Dean I own is a Rusty Cooley signature 8 string. It's actually a bolt-on neck but despite that upper fret access is incredible. Literally nothing gets in your way as Rusty used to say. I personally love Dean guitars, I own 5, the rust in peace, angel of death v, angel of death zero, ( Dave Mustaine 😍) the rust in peace I just bought shortly after Dave left Dean. All the Dave Mustaine guitar the sound and feel of them are just wow. As for my other deans I have a dime-o-flame ( I prefer to play my Mustaine) and seriously the 08 model of the Dean vendetta for a cheap guitar it's really not bad ( my first guitar) it has great quality sound and feel.. Long story short I highly recommend the Dave Mustaine guitars especially the v the zero as well

Oddly enough I picked up and really enjoy playing a Dean Deceiver F Series guitar. I always wanted a LP styled guitar with 24 frets on an ebony board and a Floyd. The only other company that makes one that I know of is ESP and, for some reason, I just never really liked ESPs necks. The Deceiver's neck fits my hand perfectly. I wish they made more of their other models with 24 fret necks.

Didn't Gibson lose an identical lawsuit against Dean about the Flying V shape in England a couple years ago? I think I remember the judge in that case saying that Gibson had taken way too long to sue. I believe Dean had been making the flying V shape for 30? years by the time Gibson decided to sue. Does anyone else remember that case?

Gibson should focus on reducing their price point and increasing their build quality. They haven't innovated anything useful since the 1950s, and the IP for body shapes should be falling into the public domain soon regardless.

I just bought a Dean V Select with the quilt top in black and honestly I'm loving it. It's sturdy and a complete work horse. My only negative comment would be the pickups mainly because I'm used to Mick Thomson Blackouts I have in my other "Metal" guitars. I'm thinking of changing the turners to locking turners but that's cause I'm a bit lazy when it comes to changing strings.

Sammy Hagar played a Dean ML before Dimebag was anything. Not to say bad about him as I think he's amazing but he cannot POSSIBLY own the ML shape. *If someone leaves Gibson who uses a Les Paul.... do they also own the shape if they changed the pickups in their custom model?* That is how I see it.

Dean Zelinsky was the founder and heart of Dean Guitars, and the reason why Dime, Mustaine and MAB were on the team. When he left and Rubinson took over, things changed for the worse. I personally love my two Dean ML's. One is a 2009 Korea Model that's heavily modded to Dimebag specs, the other is a 2020 Select Series ML with the tobacco burst quilt top, all stock. I agree with the alleged allegations that you brought to the table. Another downfall for that company is the Kerry King signature model. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge, huge Slayer fan and Kerry is every bit responsible for their success, but the outrageous pricing of the full Kerry pro model isn't a best seller just because of the price. Add that to the reputation of the heir of the companies lack of good business skills, and well, you have the fall of what could have been a legacy in the guitar world. Just my opinion here, please don't attack me with negative comments. I am just 1 of many here with a voice, an ear, and my own understanding. My really good buddy owns a Razor Back model Dean and he loves it, to me it sounds like crap, and he has all the bells and whistles with amplification and as well with the guitar. To be honest, I absolutely love the Jackson KV model and actually own an old school Dave Mustaine signature model, and it sounds like the best era of MegaDetH, however, I really think the sound of that band changed with his Dean model. It's never sounded the same... Listen to his guitar work on the old school stuff and then listen to Dystopia. To me, dean has always sounded like First Act guitars... Please don't hate.

Exactly! The name will be picked up and milked. The Kramer name is now owned by Gibson and they sell some real cheap guitars under that name. It used to be a respected brand. It happens with many manufactured goods.
@nomadronin73612 жыл бұрын
@@daniellarson3068 I agree! Actually, the new Kramer Nightswan isn't bad, though. Not up to the old USA standards but not too far off. My biggest bitch is that they do the typical Gibson thing and don't bother to set them up for Sh!t and even the frets need work, so you have to spend even more after you get one to get it sorted correctly. Just raise the price a little and set it up decently, it will pay off in the end. I've had cheap guitars (Mitchell HD400, thanks for the tip Max!) that was setup almost perfect out of the box. yes, I had to tweak it just a tad to my preference but I didn't have to have any fretwork done.

The Cadi is kinda cool looking, but my experience with Dean can basically be summed up "don't waste your money, it will not last, and you'll want to quit the guitar." I had 3 Vendettas (because i don't learn lessons lol) and that weird EVO thing. They sounded fantastic, I'll give them that much. But that's literally the only redemption they have. The first Vendettas neck broke in half while i was playing in my room. The 2nd one came with an FR system, but the nut plates (or whatever they're called) didn't fit, at all so i couldn't use said trem system. The 3rd kept needing wire work done, and the EVO had the same issue the 3rd Vendetta had. As a Pantera and Megadeth fan, this upset me greatly.

I have a 2006 Dean dime o flame, that I still own to this day. It is my number one, the body is heavy, the tone is massive and aggressive. As for the quality of the modern models, I can’t say the same. I bought Dean from hell in august from guitar center. The neck had a crack behind the neck nut placement, rough frets, and a 3 way switch that was constantly going out. I immediately returned the guitar center. Opted out for a Dean rust Razorback from guitar center. When I got the guitar, the finish had dents in the clear coat finish, a crack in the neck extending from the 15th and 17th fret, the 3 way switch was also going absolutely dead on the bridge pickup. I returned it as well and got my cash back. So no more deans for me. Despite wanting to get a final dime guitar before this contract is completely run dry. But life goes on. Hopefully maybe, possibly, we can see a new Washburn dime model in the future!

All the Dean guitars I’ve played had incredibly unplayable giant wide necks. Like some budget 80’s guitar you would find at a flea market. As for the new line with the multi scale boards and poplar finishes, just seems like a desperate attempt to stay relevant while a lot of other companies are crushing them in the modern guitar market. I don’t think they will last. Once the boomer generation dies out so will Dean, unless they make some BIG changes and totally reinvent themselves to modern players.

The interesting part was how hard it was to find. I discovered it online and looked around for one to try but the nearest one was ~800 miles away. When I got mine of amazon it had a manufacturing sticker from 2015 on it and was listed as the last one in stock.
