When you've played rooms for decades, you develop an instinct, you have jokes and bits at your fingertips. Sure Martin could comically banter in his sleep. And, there is a controlled nervousness in the air which comes from not knowing quite what to expect next. The well seasoned pros around Dino are able to quickly react to help the situation. Play by play ... even when completely drunk (as he is) ... Dean Martin's mind is quick and comedic. He picked out 'the fork in the road' line off the cuff, made the joke about swearing and then realized the audience didn't get the joke. He knew to qualify it by repeating 'fork in the road ...' to get the audience to understand and then laugh. That's a true comedian who is in control. The audience gets uncomfortable when it appears Dean doesn't know who the guest of his special is but then he keeps control by making jokes that seem to qualify the nonsense he is talking, which makes the audience comfortable again that Dean is actually in control. Johnny gets 100% where is is going from the first few seconds when he gives a laugh of disbelief, figures out Dean is drunk and then let's Dean do his thing because he knows it won't devolve. And when it starts to get too chaotic at the end, Johnny sternly says, 'sit down' like a conductor. A true master class.

I'm sixty, remember all these shows and guys like it was yesterday. Like other millions of people, have changed with the times and modern conveniences, but like other many people who have commented on the roasts, and especially my man,Don Rickels, we need guys like this today more than ever. I have always done my comedy routine on the side since I was eighteen, looking for a club here in Florida to do it again as many times a week as they want, I was and am quick with a joke on the spot, like my all time favorite, Mr. Rickels, never used his jokes, my own, but the same style. I still make fun of everyone, including my Italian and short height, as I have been joked about since I was old enough to remember. No one in the audience ever gets offended, they know, like Don Rickels, it's in fun, not dislike. I have Spanish, black, Irish, German and Jewish relatives through marriage, and my mom and dad adopted two of my closest friends when we were seven back in Philadelphia, after their parents were killed. They are my brothers and always will be. After dad died last year at age eighty from stage four cancer, they were the last two, there are seven of us altogether, those two adopted, who moved their wives, kids are grown, to Florida. A couple of their kids, my niece and nephew are soon moving here as well, because even though they were up north, always kept in touch, visits often, back and forth, I would go up there, mom and dad went and stayed with both sons, spent time with the kids and grandkids, etc...., my adopted brothers, James and Frederick, only using the word adopted so you folks will know who I mean, said, mom will be eighty two in August, and keeping in touch long distance is not enough. We want to be within a five mile radius so we can see each other every day and also mom is ecstatic knowing she will have her two daughters, technically daughter in laws right there to go out with and go to all of our favorite place, the Hard Rock Casino with whenever mom wants. I'm retired, but James wants to buy another kennel, daycare and grooming facility like the one my brother Gary and I owned for ten years. We just sold it in January of twenty four for six point three million and I sold my house for seven point five million just a few months ago to buy a house right next door to mom to help take care of her, my fifteen year old niece and her house. I'm the only one and the oldest who is no longer married. For my brother, I said without hesitation, if you want to buy a facility like Gary and I owned, I will come out of retirement to work for you and help you. He said, great, if you want to go in together as partners, even greater, but I know you might not want the extra headaches of owning again, but we will discuss it when the house is sold and we find one near you and mom. My business and house was in Orlando, where two of my other brothers live. I'm now forty five minutes from Orlando and mom and I are five minutes from Legoland, in Winter Haven Fl. You can see the fire works every night when they are closing the park if you stand outside in our driveways. It will be great having my last two immediate family members here with us and make me feel more complete, because like the rest of the kids and mom, I miss dad more every day then the previous day. Going back to the jokes, I told both of them, the first time you guys are here helping me with a project around mom's house, I can joke with the neighbor on one side of me who I am very close to and say, it's so nice that in this day and age that I was able to find two black guys I could buy and have extra hands to get projects done for mom. They did what more people today should do, laughed their asses off. Guys and my sister in laws and nieces and nephews who are moving here, I hope you read this when I tell you what you tube segment I commented on, because I want you all to know how much your family here loves you and misses all of you and you know, mom is already planning on renting the huge banquet room in Uncle Artie's neighborhood and every family member here, including our Uncles and aunts all in their upper eighties and thank God, all in over all good health, will be there,as well as the countless number of friends I have, great ones at that, will all be here to welcome you to Florida. I can't wait to take my brother's kids and their small kids to the theme parks in Orlando and everywhere I can to have Uncle Billy spoil them rotten. My brothers said, that's what we are afraid of, you doing what you always do, going overboard, and it's not like a friend or neither says, God bless him that he can afford it, no, like my brothers say, thank God we all have money, not just what mom gave us when dad passed and wanted us to have, but because we don't want the kids to think that is how it will be every time you spend a weekend at Uncle Billy 's house, but they know better. Those kids will be taught to respect things and do some chores in order to earn what they want, just like my brothers teach them. Like I said, hey having my great nephews and nieces living close by and staying overnight and never having kids of my own, except for my beloved pets whom everyone knows I go completely overboard with, I say hey, I want to make up for the time they were twelve hundred miles away and my brothers say, what the hell are you talking about big brother, every occasion, even no occasion, packages are always being delivered up here. My brother still loves the toys and clothes I sent to the kids that arrived one weekend and in the card I wrote, as it says, thinking of you guys and because it is a beautiful Saturday morning. Lol Love you guys, get here soon before it is a race to see who drops first from the stress of waiting, me or mom. Lol

If this is fake, he beats Joaquin Phoenix's performance on Letterman.

You don't accomplish what Dean Martin did in his life by having a drinking problem... Dean liked to be the clown and he played this part to a tee, he wasn't drunk he was being Dean Martin.

Maybe he was, maybe he wasn't, I don't pretend to know. But the idea that you can't accomplish great things if you have a drinking or drug problem is ridiculous. Do I need to make a list for you of great actors, musicians, artists, etc. who had substance abuse problems?

@@davebartholome2924 I think Dean's stage work that includes his drinking act the fact that most people who have known him in Hollywood or personal friends or even in some of the people in the forums Im in that have worked with him have said with absolute certainty that he didn't drink when he was working. Now did he have a drinking problem late in life after his son died, that's a different story... As far as what he accomplished, aside from his celebrity he was a scratch golfer that played 7 days a week usually 36 holes, up at 6am in bed by 10pm always home with his family for dinner... We're not talking about someone who staggered on the stage, and became parodies of themselves because of drugs and alcohol. Dean played a drunk as part of his celebrity, he had a long recording career, a long, stage career, a long television career, a long movie career... Most of the celebrities who are addicts don't have his body of work, or it becomes public at some point. Regardless of everything I said his drinking habits are extremely well documented.

He’s not drunk. He’s doing his act. That’s one ☝🏽 of the things that made him so great.
