Thoroughly enjoyable and informative video. As for the wiring length... 'better looking at it than for it'

The inspection pit looks really fgood, the lighting is brilliant (no pun intended). But that's a damn clean inspection pit... no oil or dirt or gungy stuff in it at all... But I guess since the TMD hasn't been put into use yet, your maintenance staff hadn't had the chance to use it and dirty things up yet :) Keep up the great work - you are an inspiration to us all.

+trainmanbob Hi, I don't actually mind it....its an art form in itself. I try my best and take my time to make sure the connections are secure. If you rush wiring it'll come back to bite you (I know from earlier experiences).. Thanks. Dave

Very informative Dave, a pleasure to watch. The pit looks good and the video on how you did the pit will get my undivided attention. For me, it would help if you could go past the fitting of the pit lights then on to the choc box then on to the switch and on to the power source. I am new to this and just need guidance as I cant work out how it all goes together. All the best. Barry. Devon.

Happy new year Dave and to your family, like the update the inspection pits look spot on. I use the dcc concepts boards in conjunction with the elink with the pm1 and I only use 5 wires per point. Had a lot of teething problems but after a lot of trial and error they work like a dream. Steve

+JamesStJunction Hi Happy new year. Yeah my initial idea was to use DCC control for the points, but then I decided that I quite like the physical pushing of switches...it also allows others to have some control, ie I drive, they switch points (my daughter mainly!). I am sure they are great when using with DCC, but with manual switches it was getting wire crazy!

Hi Dave, great video as always. 2 dislikes?!?! Hmmm, very sad people out there. Just a quick suggestion in relation to the class 50 issue. Try using a small to medium electrolytic capacitor across the positive and negative feed to the two lights, this should remove a good portion if not all of the flickering. Seeing as you are getting quite comfortable with wiring lol. I have a few issues with Hornby products, seems their qc department was out to lunch on a few of my hornby wagons. If you get chance, take a look at my video on hornby wagons and points. I finally have layout and a few videos up now. Happy new year Dave, keep it coming, cheers Andy

Ok on Vanguard. Mine did exactly the same as yours only the marker lights at the "B" didn't work. When I took the body off all the louvres fell out of one side. I wasn't going to send it back, from Australia it would cost the price of a new loco, so I glued each louvre back in place. As for the lights they rely on little copper contacts touching a pickup strip. Clean the strip and the copper contacts, I used a fibre glass pen. It's sort of successful as they now work a both ends but still flicker from time to time. I have some micro pin connecters that I'm going to use to wire the lights up in a more permanent fashion. Love you work in such tight a demanding space. Glad it's not me.

It got to the point where I was considering just getting a refund! Paint chips, non working lights and louvres falling out....it was ridiculous. I guess if you were not so far away you'd have sent it back. Dave

Hi Dave, I have had this problem with a number of my 50's and I now have 9 of them in my fleet but it was an easy fix. 1) remove the body 2) gently prise the two contacts forward that are on the chasis that make contact with the two contacts of the body pcb and take a fibre glass pen to clean both sets of contacts and return the body to the chasis. I haven't had issues with Ajax thankfully but hopefully this may help you. Susannah

Nice update Dave, The lighting in the pit looks really good and I think the staggering of the lights really helps. Thanks for the product code for the switches, I must get some! They are probably useful for dcc controlled layouts anyway with self centering, so you could change points either using a controller or the switches if that's possible? Cheers

Bought new ones from Peter's Spares and since super gluing them in, no probs. Not sure about the new lights, loose connection? One of my Hornby HST's the same, lights come on going round curves. Great video. Cheers.

Just a Point, I was told never to bread wires as it can cause resistance and resistance cause heat which in turn can cause fire! Now! I don't know enough about electricity to argue, so if there is anyone who knows can they add their view which will help me & Dave to "Twist or not to Twist" as always V71 was Great work, well done I just hope someone from "Peco" is watching your videos and offer you some discount
@DeanPark9 жыл бұрын
+TheAudiostud Hi, interesting thoughts...I was told by DCC Concepts (via there leaflet in the Solenoid Decoder that braiding help prevent 'spkies' in the signal, hence damaging electronic equipment) and they also told me that braiding is neater, which is certainly the case. The fact that there is only 12-15v (no idea how many Amps) running through these at momentary bursts then I suspect there wont be any heating up. I held the resistors for the inspection pit in my fingers when they were on and didnt get any heat from them, so that leaves me to think that heat is not an issue. I hope its not anyway!! Interested to hear others views. Dave

+DaveClass47 don't you just hate auto correct I meant braid not bread having corrected that, if DCC Concepts say it's cool to braid then it's cool,

the class 50 may have a problem with the type of electricity imput, this occured with my class 390, the headlights were effected by the ac current in the 16v dcc current.

I think the wiring takes more time than building the layout. I am thinking of using servo motors for my switches. They are cheap at $2 or $3 each. The electronics are a bit more. You do a great job on your layout. You sure do have lots of patients.Scott

A superb and really informative video Dave, I was particularly interested in the inspection pit as I have just put two into the engine shed on my layout as well although at the moment they are unlit but seeing the way you have done yours then I am tempted to have a go at this as well. I have an older Class 50 so I can't help on the flickering problem I'm afraid but I hope that you eventually get it sorted. Excellent update mate, don't worry about the arseholes giving the thumbs down, they are probably the same ones that give me them too - one arsehole does it within seconds of any video of mine going up so sadly it must be a subscriber. They only do it because they haven't the balls to front up, utter friggin cowards hiding behind their keyboards in their little lonely bedrooms living their lonely little lives - how sad for them. Keep doing what you're doing Dave, it's brilliant work. .........Graham

Hi Dave & Happy New Year! Love the lighting on the inspection pits - i'm now thinking that I might have to look into retrospectively fitting lighting on mine at CC although I suspect that it might be too late. Completely share your frustration with the 50 & Hornbys customer service. The louvres fell out of mine when i removed the body to fit the decoder - sent it to Hornby for them to fix and was told they couldn't do it but they'd send me a spare body. That was in November and i'm still waiting.... In the mean time i bit the bullet and bought a set of louvres from Peters spares which have now been fitted and all is ok. Touch wood, the lighting is ok on my 50 so far! Not sure if it would fit into your Scottish themed layout but the new Dapol 73 is a smashing model - i'm sure you'll have seen the large logo version of it already - well recommended anyway……. Great layout, great update, looking forward to more from you in 2016 :)
@DeanPark9 жыл бұрын
+Caversham Central Hi. Good luck with your wait. What 50 did you buy?Personally, I don't want a spare body....as the ones they'll have may be taken off the damaged returns, and after the ones I had to buy and send back (7 in total!!!) in order to get a damaged free body I don't want to restart that saga!! lol. It almost sent me to the mental institution! I will find a way to fix the lights.Where the louvre replacements from Peters spares a match for your loco?....ie in terms of BR blue, did the paint shades match?Incidentally, my class 55 Bachmann deltic broken down, was making an awful noise when cruising. I emailed Bachmann, they replied within 2 days. 2 days later it was in the post and 3 days after that I received a posted letter (actual paper letter!) saying they had received my model and would repair it within 15 days. NOW THATS CUSTOEMR CARE! Take note Hornby!!!!All the best for your layout this year, I do love watching your updates. Dave

+DaveClass47 I went for 50024 Vanguard. A lovely model apart from the issues highlighted. The replacement louvres are spot on in terms of colour match and seem to be much more robust than the originals. Just a shame that Hornby's quality control couldn't pick up the faults!
@DeanPark9 жыл бұрын
***** Hi, yes I sent a rather blunt email to them regarding their quality control and assurance. No reply!! I must have had the cover off and on this class 50 15 times to try get to bottom of the lighting issue....its a pain in the arse to say the least! I have contacted Hornby to ask for replacement pcb boards that connect the lights to the circuit board, but you guessed it...no reply!

As per previous commentators, you have some patience when it comes to the wiring. I'm keeping it simple, stone age simple, on my layout! But doing it properly first time round is going to pay dividends in the long run. If I had the time to watch videos and leave negative comments, I'd put that time to much better use elsewhere - ignore the nay sayers.

Hi Dave. Great video as ever :) Just a quick question - have you thought if the seep motors with built in polarity? Or was there a reason for peco motors with accessory? Ask as deliberating on which to use myself!
@DeanPark9 жыл бұрын
+Owen Rees Hi....I have heard the SEEP with built in acc switches can fail, then you're looking at a whole new motor (which in my case would be really difficult to replace in that tight area). I chose Peco as the acc switch is not electronic, its manual, so if it does break its easy to replace without replacing the whole motor.I have used 1 seep at the back of the TMD as they are smaller than the Peco and it allows trains to pass under the motor in the tunnel without any issues. The point it is connected to is a Y radius turnout and it is not wired for frog polarity switching so hopefully I will be ok with it working for a long time!Hope these ramblings answer your question? ;-)Dave
