In this video Canadian Guitarist/producer Dean Wolfe reacts to Finnish Metal band Oranssi Pazuzu.
A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught Canadian guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician on the road at age 17 for two years, but went part-time ever since while holding day careers including as a chef and in spiritual health care while raising a family.
I've recorded hundreds of my own songs- many being used in media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I abandoned the prog genre more or less back in the 1990s but have returned to it now with vigour a full 30 years later- so much prog I've ignored and quite frankly didn't have any idea about. My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electric as well).

I had the privilege of seeing them in the fall of 2020 just before they canceled and postponed live shows and the likes in Finland. After that first half of year of covid isolation a healthy dose of Oranssi Pazuzu live was electrifying to say the least. Everyone was so into the gig and it felt like being in a trance. They played the whole Mestarin Kynsi and one song, Vasemman Käden Hierarkia, from their previous album. I highly recommend checking a live performance of that song, it's magnificent! Anyway, thx for the great reaction!

Such an awesome band, surely one of my favorites! I finally got to see them this Easter at the Inferno Metal Festival in Oslo. One of the opening bands on Sunday, at 6 in the evening, so not a very big crowd yet. I knew what I was in for, but most of the audience didn't, and they too got blown away =) Unfortunately, their gig only lasted for 45 minutes. So I am really hoping they'll come back for a full concert!

There actually is a genre for this type of music; blackgaze, as in fusion of black metal and shoegaze. One of the Oranssi Pazuzu guys said in interview that when people go to metal concerts they usually headbang and wave their arms but on their shows people often just quietly sway back and forth.

Hey Dean, I have a request; Meshuggah - Dancers To A Discordant System. One of the most influential metal bands of all time, one of the best drummers out there and just a spectacularly unique band. One of my favourite bands. Adam Jones from Tool has named them as one of his great inspirations, and they did support Tool on tour a couple of decades ago🤘

I liked the trance-like undulation of this song. There seemed to be a constant static fuzz in the background, tho. It kinda distracted from the musicality. Great breakdown at 7:03! I also like how the song was split into different movements, like a tryptic. Imho, this song could do with less splashy cymbals, but instead add in a didgeridoo.😁
