As a full time creator my advice is to just create the content you enjoy at the highest quality it can be and to post it as consistently as you can. In order to get growth as a channel it’s all about providing content people can enjoy aka the longer someone watches your video the higher the probability your video will get recommended around. Just think, would you sit down and watch your own video? If the answer is no then make one you would

As long as you do something you love you shouldn’t think about who else like it. At least at first right. If you are happy with what you post the view count shouldn’t matter. That’s what I tell myself. Then I remember it’s KZbin and the reason for doing it is to have others see it 😅

As a film-maker and KZbinr who just surpassed 100k subs, I can honestly say that weekly content is an unreasonable standard. Art was never meant to be manufactured in a warehouse, on an assemble line. It's important to make the best videos you can, not to "just make content" because you "need a video that week." It's important to take breaks, recharge the creative juices and then get back to work. 🤘

I stumbled across something by accident that might work. Film when you want to, but only upload one or two videos a week, even if you filmed five videos that week. That way, you build up a Catalogue of videos that you can release on a regular schedule, even in weeks where you didn't film any videos.

I just finished a 30-day challenge where I posted a new video every day and not only am I completely burnt out but all my analytics are on a steady downward trend for like 3 weeks even with DAILY UPLOADS!! I'm happy I finished the challenge but it's absolutely better to focus on making 1 great video and not 10 just ok videos. You can get way more views with less work focusing on 1 quality post versus the quantity approach.

The reality of it is... you have to be willing to post at least once a week for a very long time, most likely 6 months to a year until one of your videos gets put into the algorithm. You have to be content with seeing 50 views on a video that took you hours to make, weekly. Not many people have the motivation for that, let alone the extra time for that risk. Especially if you end up quitting before youtube puts one of your videos on peoples recommended... it will have been a huge waste of time. Thats why there HAS to be a deep down passion to create, similar to an artist that volunteer to paint or draw something nobody wont even ever see... just because they enjoy doing it. Do that, if you dont have that creative passion, please dont waste your time. Even if you do get a semi-viral/viral video you will end up quitting eventually because of that lack of creative passion/motivation.

I always appreciate your honesty and "get to the point" way of saying things. You are the first person to mention ads. I tried ads on two of my videos and yeah.. they got views, but my average view duration dropped to about 0:30.. It kinda sucks since you're paying for it and you expect it to work better than any other service out there because it's a google product and you're targeting a specific audience. Thank you for also saying that youtube doesn't promote your content at the beginning, because I'm tired of click-baits who say bullshit on how to grow your channel. I've already learnt from my analytics that youtube doesn't promote it. I got only one video that suddenly got suggested and grew organically after 1 year.

I'm so grateful for your musical contribution to the streaming/KZbin community. The DMCA thing, while well-intended, can be broken and daunting. There are so many instances where Twitch thinks your content is fine, but KZbin does not, or an artist with the rights to a sampled song declares they are "free-to-play" but the algorithm still detects the original sampled song, or sometimes an artist just declares verbally they're "free" but the DMCA algorithm doesn't agree. It's a giant headache, and while I don't currently and likely will never make money from either Twitch or YT, I am very appreciative of the effort you've given to provide people like me with music AND written validation of permission to be able to listen to good music and also not worry about any of the red tape.

the needing affirmation bit was gold. I just started a few months ago and there's already been several times where I'm about to ask someone for their opinion on something - should I include this thing / what should I do with this thumbnail format / etc - but I always default back to feeling like if I need help with microdecisions about my content, I probably shouldn't be making content to begin with. gotta be decisive!

I have three things to say about consistency: 1. I have experienced a fair amount of growth during periods where I didn't upload. I'm moving to a "when it gets done" model for content, meaning that a single video takes a couple weeks to come together in terms of researching, writing, recording and editing. 2. Some fairly large creators on the platform don't have anything remotely resembling an upload schedule. Creators like Philosophy Tube, Hbomberguy, and Contrapoints upload one big video every month, if not every several months, which makes sense when you consider the length, amount of research, and overall production value of their work. 3. Frequent uploads can actually hurt you due to subscribers eventually not getting notified if they miss so many uploads. There are many cases where creators pulled it back a bit and wound up seeing an increase in views.

I remember hearing the same things from videogameDunkey, that a change of pace doesn't stifle his creation anymore. And it makes sense to change upload frequency, our brains calculate stuff for us like how often a day or week a video pops up you go straight for the video thats rarer because its easier to miss.

Dude, awesome advice on the video! I’m new to KZbin. 3 months under my belt and just now starting to get an understanding how KZbin works. And you know what initially it was hard to admit to myself that my first few videos were cringe worthy. But I learned not to make it personal. And it was the biggest thing I could of done for myself. Literally. Some signs where no to very little interactions. Plenty of like but view duration was only between 15 and 30 percent very low. So when KZbin would test my videos and get these signals I wouldn’t last long before I flatlined. So I studied and had many sleepless night for a whole month. I learned to edit. I learned how to speak speak better. And learned how to to test thumbnails and titles. As a test I re-recorded 4 videos that had flatlined. Now one of them has steady traction. Averaging around 30 views a day. It has engagement the view duration is around 75 to 80 percent. And just the other day for the first time ever it was picked up under suggested watch source and in on day it popped to 100 views. Than stabilizes around 40 views a day. So I applied similar tactics to my other videos and I’m hitting the steady numbers I was looking for

Good advice, thank you! I feel the quality of what I am offering is slightly ahead of where a Newb would normally be because I have a graphic design/acting/music/writing/editing background, however, I am STILL a new KZbinr and I am learning all the time. All of your points are valid and I have been practicing all but one prior to watching this video- and I will be following this now: don't post weekly (but stay consistent) so quality doesn't suffer for quantity's sake. I have been posting every week. One week I had two short vids so I posted twice that week. Every other week will work much better until the audience/algorithm finds me and gets to know my content. There could be GREAT new creators out there, but they are invisible until IT finally happens. So, I will focus even more on my quality, scramble less, post bi-weekly and it happens when it happens. (My wife and daughter will like this too.)

Kind of disagree with the not posting weekly or on a set schedule. Or well I agree that you shouldn't do it because the youtube algorithm, but I think the biggest risks most creators have is to just go for too long without posting a video and then it just becomes a non-priority. If you are committed to posting 1 video every week and feel beholden to that, then you are more likely to make that happen and it will ensure you do some work on your videos/channel every week. But if your mindset is that you will just post whenever you feel like it, you easily fall into a rut where it goes weeks or months without doing any work on your videos. If this 100% won't happen then I assume just spending time improving your skills over holding a specific schedule is as good or better. But I think even for most people who are 100% sure this won't happen it's pretty likely to happen 😬
