The thing about light is that you can hate him all you want but you can at least respect his intelligence and overall confidence. The man literally changed the world. Here turner is nothing more than a controlled puppet who is reactive for most of the movie. When the director, or whoever the hell it was said "Is Light a villain or a hero? If we get sequels, we can really explore both possibilities." I knew the whole crew would be a bunch of hacks. If you're a fan of the source material, the original anime and/or manga, you know that Light is, without a doubt, a villain. He's a cold, calculating, manipulative bastard who, in the second season, kills his own father, not to mention his use and abuse of Misa pretty much from the time they meet until both of their deaths at the end of the series.

Misa in the original: Very different from light, starts off as a possible enemy/complication before becoming a useful tool in ligh'ts arsenel and becomes key in his plans, shakes up the plot misa in the netflix live action film: is basically just 'eviller light', doesn't really do much beyond things the movie light refused to do and ends up becoming a final act twist villain for light to defeat but is otherwise unremarkable.

I feel like if the creators had no interest in actually being accurate to Light and L's characters, they should've just went all the way and made them original characters, that happen to be in the same universe as the canon Death Note show. And the way Death Note's story is set up would easily allow for that too. Just have it take place after Light dies, have Ryuk be bored again, and then decide to go to the U.S to plop the DN on another teenager. I know adaptations should be judged on their own,but they set themselves up for the comparison when they chose to name two of the characters "Light" Turner and "L". But the characters are only Light and L in name only. Also, the movie basically wastes the only interesting idea it had:how would society react to Kira and the effects of the DN in a time where social media is a much larger part of life? Back when the original DN,both the show and the original manga, was written social media wasn't nearly as big of a thing as it was now. How would a new Kira have to face the obstacles that come with people having easily accessible ways of spreading information? He have to be more careful than ever to not get caught. Also, how would a Kira cult work with social media? Instead of all of this the movie wastes it's time in teen drama BS.

That made me nearly blow a gasket when I found out that Watari didn’t have an alias or pseudonym to go by, but actually had been going around _with his REAL name._ In the anime/manga, his name was Quillish Wammy iirc, and being L’s direct assistant/butler/guard/etc. he more or less took the same amount of precautions as him to hide himself from the numerous Kiras and do his job. But this guy didn’t even try to hide himself, making both L and him and complete idiot. He only made it that far because Light himself is an idiot in the movie too.

10:09 Bruh. L in the anime is not emotional at all. In the scene you show, L is just faking it. As a matter of fact, L fakes most of his emotions when interacting with people, especially Light. L is a master liar which successfully fooled even most of the audience, and that's one of his main character traits.

4:43 Fun fact from Russia: if he meant "kira" as a word it didn't exist in modern russian language, if he meant the russian name, its a female only name, and its origins and meaning in the past is disputed. It might have meant "sun" or "mistress" as well. Another fun fact from Russia: distribution trough the internet of the original death note was recently banned in Russia (it probably won't stop anyone from getting it from torrents but still). Now watching this vid i realized that netfllix adaptation is technically still legal.

Regarding your point about the gun man's death (16:47), it's a good comparison between the original manga/anime and the Netflix adaption in how they carried out a specific method of someone dying. Like how you explained here, the gun man was standing in the street for such a long period of time that it's impossible the truck driver wouldn't notice. While in the original Death Note, a biker named Takuo Shibuimaru was hit by a truck because he sped into oncoming traffic on his motorcycle. The driver who hit Takuo had literally no time to react, which made them hitting him possible without them being controlled. While the truck driver who hit the gun man had plenty of time to brake or swerve away.

One of the things that irked me the most was that writing Watari in the Death Note worked. Couple this with them trying to copy the FBI agent writing the names on a paper from the notebook more or less wholesale, means that the rule of needing the true full name and keeping the face in your mind should still be in effect in this adaptation. So the two scenes go against each other

An easy fix for some of this adaptation's biggest problems really would have been to just start with a whole new set of characters but in the same world that the story of the main series took place in, possibly making Light/Kira into a legendary Boogieman figure in the backstory of the movie. That way, there is no direct comparison to previous characterizations or plot events. Sure, people would inevitably compare the quality of characters but that could have been addressed in the work itself, having the shinigami of that part pointing out what a meathead the new Death Note user is compared to the last guy or what have you.

before the video I will make a preassumption: deathflix failed because the plot was poorly written, rules weren't properly set up (looking at physically possible), and the climax ended via lightflix quite literally writing the events which by the way as E;R pointed out it's extreme convolution, I wont get to that. also L being extremely stupid in the movie compared to the actual show for example L knows lightflix is 99% likely to be kira so why not do the wiretap+camera combo when james and light are at out. Personally what I would have done for deathflix would have been to set it many years after the original deathnote following the ideas of the oneshot, mainly ryuk purposefully chosing light turner due to taking inspiration from Light Yagami, Near just sending a replacement because he isn't remotely interested into the case and because light turner plays extremely safely so the L we see (and it should be extremely clear BY THE WAY) is fake or a fanatic who works alone. I would end the movie via fake L winning perfectly and then having Near come in contact with netflix L and giving him an offer for formal training to being a detective and there we go the plot now looks more interesting. if I were to make specific changes and change as little as possible to the main plot: 1) I would cut L's introduction and instead have the scene pan out to news of kira being reborn and then switch to the L emblem or a homescreen with same emblem. 2) have mia be the person that is most active to being kira and have mia straight out murder Lightflix in the finale while setting someone up with her charms to do the job for her while she has a solid allibi and then have said idiot die of a heart attack or suicide due to bullying she concocts 3) remove the entire end of the movie or alter the end of the movie heavily, have lightflix die instead of mia, have mia literally use lightflix as a tool similar to how live action light used (I forgot her name) during the 2nd(?) deathnote live action 4) enforce the obvious rules of the death note and keep the idea of criminals dying of a heart attack as light did that for 2 obvious reasons as light's goal was to kill as many criminals possible with the time he has so adding cause of death is a waste of time and heads and because it gives kira a signature so it is clear that heart attacks are done by kira's hands. 5) the ending can go 2 ways, L catches mia's dummy who promptly dies of a heart attack creating a bait for a sequel if they really want to or Mia kills L as the scene pans to her with shinigami eyes

I was not happy with this adaptation of one of the best animes ever. The only compliments I will give it is that Willem Dafoe was freaking perfect as Ryuk and I still laugh hysterically at the scene where Light screams like a little girl when he sees Ryuk for the first time. But again, those are my only compliments. The rest just has me going "why??".

I've been wondering how Ace Attorney (2012) is viewed in terms of video game/anime adaptations. I watched it after watching RTGame's playthrough of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney 2-3 times and then finally playing the game for myself and thought it was pretty great. I'm not keen on what they did with Larry Butz and Redd White, but I really liked it. I'm not a fan of anime/manga, but thanks to RTGame, I've been too busy playing Ace Attorney games to do anything else for the past 3 weeks.

Ah yes I remember when my mom and sister saw the movie before the anime and they didn't like it. When I told mom about the anime and how I wanted to watch it with her since she doesn't really care for the animes I watch. (I'm rather fond of shojin myself MHA RWBY are shows I could watch anytime.) So when I learned more about Death Note I thought it would be a good anime for us to watch and I was right but I had to practically beg to get her to watch it because the movie was such a turn off. But the Netflix live action adaptations can work mom and I liked the Winx Club adaptation and hey it got me interested in looking into the original anime sometime.

This movie could have easily been the light shinigami if it actually was him from the end of the story, coming to earth and doing what ryuk did, seeing if he could find anyone who could live up to what he did with the death note, or just being bored as shit like most shinigami

You know it would be cool if they made a Death Note spin-off/sequel with more than one protagonist(?), it would probably take place after the reign of kiru/light, and (Not a big Death Note fan, but I know the basics) it could have new death gods and characters. And they can branch out from there.

I can accept complete change of a character for an adaptation. I can accept a different change the story. I mean, the never ending story had some change and it's still a great movie. Total recall (with Schwarzy) aswell. But the movie fall appart on it's own with the rule it try to put in place. The most obvious i think of is the note on the book that said " Beware of Ryuku" in the very begining of the book (not sure of the actual message, the most important is that there's the name of Ryuk on it. At some point, Light threatning Ryuk that he could write his name on the book and kill him, Ryuk answer that, some have tried and never where able to finish it.. What about the guy who written it entirely?

6:24 In my personal opinion (again not big Death Note fan) I think light started with good (slightly egotistical/ego fulling) intentions, but at the end, he thinks he's a god because of the Death Note until his name is written in the Death Note by Ryuk (Presumably because he went insane).

While I don't completely hate this movie, the characters irk me, particularly Light and L since we're forced to then compare them to their manga/anime counterparts since they share the same names and same roles. We're supposed to sympathize and root for Light in this version since he's the underdog who's been bullied for standing up for other people (like Mikami), had his mother murdered (like Misa with her parents) and wants to make the world a better place (like Light Yagami before he crossed the line in [insert chapter/episode where you lost sympathy for him here]), and there is a market for underdog characters who have done some shitty things to try to improve their lives (Veronica Sawyer, Seymour Krelborn, Scott Pilgrim, etc.), but he comes across as a sanctimonious coward who only started doing what he does either out of petty anger or because he wanted to impress a girl, there's never really a moment where he's called out for his garbage behavior (at least not by anyone who matters according to the director), and (unless it's revealed in the sequel that's currently in development Hell that L killed him or that he's spent time in prison between films) doesn't face any consequences for his actions. And as for this L, while Keith Stanfield got the mannerisms down and I don't mind that L is a little more emotional and likely dealing with PTSD from the abusive training he received from the not Wammy House as a child, the writers seemed to have forgotten that L's not supposed to be some smart but eccentric amateur detective that happens to have money and "friends in high places:" L is supposed to be the greatest detective in the the world (and also the second and third greatest since he has two other detective pseudonyms), is very careful about who he allows to see him and Watari (often getting people like Naomi Misora to act as his "hands"), has access to highly sensitive information, and has A LOT of control and influence over the police (to the point that he all but owns them) and likely other parts of governments worldwide which has allowed him to get away with many things that weren't exactly legal or ethical (surveillance cameras placed in homes without consent, kidnapping, torture, setting up experiments like the Lind L. Tailor broadcast or the fake execution to get results, allowing professional criminals to walk free and continue committing crimes in exchange for their services in future cases, etc.). This became a secondary reason for Light to kill L in the anime, Light wanted L's power in order to keep the investigators from finding out he's Kira and to have access to more criminals to kill. The Netflix L either doesn't have that power or didn't think to use it against Light (surveillance was put in way too late to do anything, the people hired to tail Light are bad at keeping a low profile and got fooled by a kid wearing a top hat during the homecoming dance, and just decided to threaten Light with violence toward the end instead of something more subtle but still damaging such as interfering with aspects of his life [higher education, career, financial security, etc.] once he leaves high school) which, when combined with his intelligence being nerfed and him being more easily angered, makes him come across less as a genius detective and more like an angry man-child with a gun (which likely has unfortunate implications, but I won't get into it here).

Okay so what whether instead of that dumpster fire we got aka the movie... I was sort of thinking. What if maybe the Death Note was just dropped in America by Ryuk in the modern eara bescue again he was board. He wanted to see what happened inside of a modern day with social media and how people would react to Kira again. I mean that sounds like a decent idea. I mean it dosnet sound too good and having Ryuk wanted to explore modern day. Then I was thinking about how maybe he dropped it on another teenager named Light by coincidence as he thought maybe they would act the same or just a teen with similer qualities. Just a random idea sorry if it is bad lol and I agree with you in this video.
