Ngl, I tried liking it, but the art style was a huge turn-off. When a game can't grab you immediately by the gameplay, it doesn't hurt for it to be nice to look at and when it comes to custom characters, players need to be allowed to make either, cool, cute or funny... and if it's an Asian game, you can also make it sexy. But this game was just funny and not particularly good at it. Anyway, see you in the Death of a Game for Rawmen.

I can't express how the art work and name, particularly with that poster, made me instantly pay no attention to the game. I saw an ad for it at one point and just assumed it was a mobile clone as that poster looked identical to any of a thousand other games with similar sounding names, I am honestly surprised that it only lasted 5 months as I am sure with a bit of work someone could go back years and find near identical promotional material over and over again

Had this been set to release a few gaming generations ago, e.g. the PS2 c. 2003, this would have 1. Been solely marketed towards children. 2. Had gameplay_focused_ on the cartoonish wrestling idea. 3. Would have stood out against a sea of visually realistic games at the time. 4. Released as a physical game. That being said, I'd probably play it if that was the case, but as it is, it feels more like a tech demo from back then than the final product. I quite like the art style, but exaggerated anatomy will always be a hard sell for adult players. Sure, _Fortnite_ is stylised, but everyone still has realistic proportions. That and what this game badly needs is some defined characters and a storyline to follow or bounce off of. Context can make a huge difference gameplay-driven game like this.
@ashblossomandjoyoussprung.99177 ай бұрын
@@DoctorInk20 I feel like children wouldn't have liked this game because the combat was made for people with experience in fighting games. If you mash, which is what kids and newbies do, you'll get severely punished for it. Fortnite appeals to them because the combat is "I shoot you, bam, you're dead," but this game is "I punch you. I whiffed. I got combo'd and I lost... Awww, man, this sucks."
@TheChimpyManCan7 ай бұрын
Dammit, this one hurt... Rumbleverse was by far the most genuine fun I had with any of these battle-royale types. Going all in on the cartoon wrestling it did away with the usual problem of wasting 5 minutes looking for a decent weapon only to be one-shot by some lucky git who started on top of a golden railgun. Scrambling up the tallest building you could find, catching someone with an Izuna drop taking you both all the way back down, landing on a springy car that catapults you across the whole city block then hitting solid pavement so hard the other guy just explodes in a big firey ball... good times.

I played a bit over 1k matches and just barely squeaked out a slightly over 50% top 5 rate. There isn't a week I go by without missing RV. It went out at its best patch too. It introduced the final ring moving in a random direction towards one of the edges of the map, which instantly made every match feel way more unique because you wouldn't be stuck in one of the (admittedly many) predetermined final locations. That one change solved so many problems too. Turtling was an issue before that patch, but you can't just sit and block constantly when the ring is moving, and even if you try eventually you'll be out on the water anyway. It made a bunch of niche grabs, knockback specials, and movement specials actually worth taking because you'd know that inevitably you'd end up near an edge eventually instead of being landlocked like so many final rings were. I also disagree with the idea there wasn't enough content, or that the game was a "wrestling" game instead of just a fighting game inspired by wrestling. They were adding in new items and specials every patch, they added a full new map like 2 patches before shutdown (which was also connected to the first map so sometimes you'd be on one, transition to the other, then get forced back again because of the ring moving), and people had tons of speculation on what would be coming in next (Chun-Li's kicks being a constant ask). In my eyes the game simply was doomed to failure for one reason. Fighting games have terrible player retention baseline (for a lot of reasons I won't get into), and making a fighting game that's only online AND needs 25+ players just to field a single match is a recipe for disaster. They added bots to get queues going (thank god, before that it was 5+ minutes to find a match, after that it was rarely more than 1) but the bots are nowhere near as good as players of course, so that felt hollow for a lot of people. It took me a while to adjust, but I actually liked them by the end, they were basically free perks and just another resource to fight over like weapons or specials. It doesn't help that the way the progression system worked meant that when you entered a new bracket you'd be pretty much entirely cut off from the previous one and that it was XP based instead of win/loss based so you'd inevitably be forced to progress. I'd hit a new bracket, load into a new match, and then get absolutely mollywhopped by the new level of competition for like 20+ matches in a row until I got my footing. People don't like losing like that, I'm pretty immune to it but even I felt discouraged, until I gitted gud it felt almost like getting punished for playing more. Also, for some reason it never had a ranked queue. They probably couldn't afford to split the playerbase even further, but there was constant complaining about casuals being matched into killers, and a lot of people wanted a queue to really tryhard in as well. I think if RV came back with say ~15 humans per match and 7~ bots instead of trying to fill a room full of 40 people, had the initial rings start 2 sizes smaller, and then just used a MMR system for matchmaking instead of having such strict divisions it'd be able to go a lot further. Maybe also use a less cartoony artstyle (or let people have way more access to cosmetics, because I saw a LOT of fun/cool outfits in the final patch because they let everyone use every item for free, there was an absolute epidemic of Peter Griffins lmao) too, idk. But what I do know is that RV was some of the most fun I've ever had gaming (even the early patches where dive bomb nuking people from offscreen with weapons was wildly overpowered), and the gameplay itself was incredible, the patches were constantly making things better and increasing playstyle diversity, and Iron Galaxy were always amazing at responding to the players and improving the game. But never again will I get to bean someone with a homing chancla then combo them into a inazuma drop that slams them into the ground so hard they bounce off into the ocean for the KO, and that's a damn shame.
@Graysett7 ай бұрын
Also it was barely advertised and being stuck on the epic games store was pretty awful. Those both go a long way too lol. Also, for some godforsaken reason even though the game had a pretty decent tutorial it was hidden in the "freeplay" mode and spread out across 3 locations on the map, with absolutely no indication that the tutorial existed until you decided to go to freeplay yourself.
@Gamerznation7047 ай бұрын
I heavily agree with this, If you followed or did a bit more research into one of the people behind the development of the game that was pretty vocal (aka Keits) would know that this game wasn't necessarily a (wrestling adjacent) game. Alot of the design mechanics along with the thought process was from a fighting game standpoint, although it most certainly brought out a bit of that crowd. I think, alot of the problem is the art style but also in general this game came out at the wrong time. Gamers are finicky, and as what was mentioned earlier, fighting games have terrible retention. This game was honestly some of the best fun I'd had in a while, and don't get me wrong I can't stand the art style. However from the wrestling aspect alot of the moves they got were amazing and as someone who grew up on the wrestling games, fighting games this was perfect in that department (heavily disagree with the moves not feeling wrestling adjacent, this game arguably did that the best) I think the above comment honestly got down pretty much why this game did well, I think there should have been a bit more research into this actually failed.

We get arcade wrestling about as often as we get arcade racing these days so this game was a sight for sore eyes. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Its a sad day in gaming where the only game I've ever played where you can spinning dtt someone off of a skyscraper becomes completely unable to be played. It stings worse because bots (while not a replacement for real players) were already a part of the game. Why not just give us an offline bot mode? Can't stand when the decision to make a game an online live service completely locks it in as an online only or gtfo game. I can't even recommend the new Hitman games, despite their fun gameplay, because your saved online only progression tied to item unlocks is on the devs servers that lose connection every two hours. Whats wrong with games like Rumbleverse and Hitman 3 getting an offline mode?

As someone who played since launch and put 100s of hours into the game I can tell you release was a bit shit with bugs regarding hitboxes and stuff missing or hitting when it shouldn't but it did get better after the first season However there was so much to this game, the best way for me to describe it is as a 3D smash bros battle royale since there was a huge emphasis on movement and platforming, from doing two consecutive jumps to jump higher to dodging in air to get more distance, you can even block and jump and it will flip your character the other way making it easy to climb over a roof from a parking lot or something The only thing I think really hurt the game was the artstyle as even I was put off by it and only tried it because I like fighting games. With that being said there was so many customization options that making your character look cool wasn't an issue and they would add a lot of new weapons which would help with combos. Not to mention the games artstyle grew on me so much so that I think its perfect for the game overall its just the first impressions is what hurts it. People did think it was a mobile game or something including me until I got a notification from epic games on my pc. They added a freaking keybat which is just a reference to the keyblade and you can actually fly with it in game, don't even get me started on the combos where a lot of the time it was situational based off of your location If you are on a roof you can do roof combos where you knock the opponent off the building then catch them, wall combos which is self explanatory and of course floor combos, where if there is nothing else around they just get knocked over and you can elbow drop them or if you have something that can lift from the floor you can then extend the combo You even mentioned the lack of personality which is CRAZY The emotes went hard I believe one of the first emotes you were able to get was a crying emote where you literally make fun of your enemies and pretended cry while your character says "Boo-Hoo" (ITS IN THE TRAILER DAMMIT) I understand you can't play the game now so it's hard to actually review it but genuinely this game was gold, I think about it nearly every day and I'm actually working on remaking the games fighting mechanics because I liked it so much.

One detail I wanted to throw in that I didn't see discussed in the video - the game was actually not very group-friendly. You could either go solo or duo (tag-team) with a friend, but 3 or more was not offered. They actually did have a "trios" mode, but it was only as a limited-time event, not a permanent configuration. BR games can be more solo-oriented, but I felt that a game as vibrant and wacky as this could've done more on that front. Needless to say, I did love playing Rumbleverse whenever I had the opportunity, and it was one of those few games that I felt would've lasted longer had it not been firmly in Fortnite's shadow and competing for player retention on FN's home platform.

From what I remember, a few streamers that I watched really enjoyed the game because it dipped into the mechanics of fighting games. I won't elaborate on what they are because I'm terrible at them, but that might have been why Rumbleverse had such an explosive start and died with a whimper. It closely follows fighting game releases where there is an almost unimaginable successful launch, but as people hit their skill ceilings they put the game down. Only those that are willing to spend hours perfecting mechanics to become better stay.

It’s important to understand that fighting games are incredibly niche out the gate and as time is progressing they are becoming even more so. The only company that truly does triple AAA #s commercially is MK/Injustice. For a company to maintain a live service BR in this already niche space is a ridiculous task especially with zero investment required by the user. It has the appeal of a pick up and play sort of mobile game aesthetic but it’s very deep and intertwined with a lot of fighting game mechanics that IG is known for. The is a huge problem especially with non existent matchmaking with a low player count. Noobs were getting absolutely crushed and had very little incentive to get better because there are a 1000 other games they could go have a better time in instead. I think IG made something very special and I commend them for making the game they wanted to make regardless of the metrics and numbers.

In fact, I bought SF6 to play casually and didnt even bother with MK1. You can easily look up the sales figures for any of these companies/games and see capcom gets stomped out on mass appeal and sales simply because MK pulls in a very large portion of non-fighting game enthusiasts due to it's legacy and other media. This isn't even an argument. It's literal fact. Regardless of whatever bullshit you're trying to spi,n the whole fucking point of this is that there was no way this game was going to survive in the vacuum that is the FGC as a GaaS. The money and playerbase just isn't there and the ONLY reason some of these huge fighting games do big numbers is by legacy. That's what these companies want to see from a GaaS. Not niche fighting game numbers.

Their only real success is Killer Instinct, which they inherited completely including engine, animations, tuning, everything from Double Helix.
@nerdSlayerstudioss7 ай бұрын
you got auto moderated btw, but i fixed
@dragonbornexpress56507 ай бұрын
Well, not just inherited; Double Helix literally taught them all of that because Double Helix was getting purchased by Amazon at the time.
@cloudcity41947 ай бұрын
@@dragonbornexpress5650 so, you're telling me that all of that knowledge can just get passed down in a matter of days? Weeks? Months? If that's the case, why aren't ALL games better? Shouldn't people just be able to TELL the next people how to do something and they be just as good? I think you're confusing telling someone how to use an engine with teaching them how to make a good fighting game.

I'm glad you touched on it, because I think the BIGGEST problem with Rumbleverse and games like it, is it's art style. I'm sorry people who like it, but silly style art just isn't it. No good amount of gameplay can ever save them. ESPECIALLY as a f2p. Just look at any game out right now that has skins and costumes in the game. I'd feel safe saying that roughly 10-15% of the playerbase purposely dresses their character in a silly way and sometimes only temporarily for a meme among their friends. And 15% of 100k players is only a playerbase of 15k; and when you consider the people who only do it as a joke temporarily, you're looking at an average of like 2-5k players who enjoy the art style whole heartedly, but then you further have to weed people out because it's a BR, it's wrestling, etc. It was WAYYYY too niche. These kind of silly art style games are usually best sold as a $30 party game that you kinda drop after 5-8 hours or whenever your friend group gets bored of it. This is also why I feel games like Battleborn failed, obviously competing with Overwatch was the biggest factor, but Paladins has managed to scrape by this entire time and that game barely even works half the time, after all these years. But Paladins has pretty grounded, not too outlandish and silly, art style. Meanwhile Battleborn has characters like Montana half naked with the body of a massive boulder and a head the size of a pebble; running alongside Phoebe, I completely normally proportioned, elegantly dressed swordswoman. They don't look like they exist in the same world, let alone the same game. What drive would a normal player have to buy skins for Montana, they'd all just make him look varying degrees of silly. Games make money when they reach a broader audience. Using Overwatch as an example, you can have the massive bodied Reinhardt with an appropriately proportioned head and have him be both really cool and really silly. I think his best selling skin to date is a carboard armor skin he got that turns his normal hulking armored physique into a kid's cardboard armor you make with dad on a sunday afternoon. When you design a game to only attract a silly audience, you shouldn't be surprised how quickly the interest in the game dies down. People don't want to be silly all the time, and people surely don't want to spend money on looking silly in a game that already looks silly.

I loved Rumbleverse, played it almost every day from start-to-finish because it was so much fun! The devs had a knack for creating funny moments and utilizing fighting game mechanics in a Battle Royale (a genre I'm not normally fond of). I really hope it comes back in some form.

Look at the top 4 BR's out right now. People want to shoot each other. A lot of the biggest BR failures lately were games like Rumbleverse. Gimmicks don't equal long term success

Rumbleverse was something special for me. It really felt like a Fighting-game BR. The biggest issues was lack of modes and troubles to generate revenue (I literally bought one outfit, feel in love with it and never bought anything else). One thing I will say is that this game had the BEST feeling movement of a 3D game that I have played in that last 5years! If it wasn't for the ""need"" to generate revenue and the game could just be a game without being shut down. I would still be playing today. This kind of game-feel coulda lent itself to numerous game modes, not just BR.

Man. I was one the few who actually played this game daily. Despite lacking a bunch of content, i feel like this game puts a slapstick twist on wrestling which honestly grew on me, despite not being like wwe, wwf pro wrestling. I feel like this game does it better than any of the wwe games by just letting u use the whole arena and location as a giant wrestling ring, it felt like clashing multiple toys wrestlers together as a kid, minus the ring.

Think the devs should had taken some cues from Platinum Games' Anarchy Reign/Max Anarachy's 16 player FFA mode with Rumbleverse getting some enemy npcs and sub boss on the map as well as those random events like Colony Laser, Air plane crashing during matches in Anarchy Reigns

I loved this game and played it all throughout its life cycle. They had a 1 year contract with Epic Games in order to make this game profitable, wasting 6 months of it with that delay that you mentioned in the video. They only had 6 months to rake in the profit and ultimately failed. I wished it would've lasted longer, they had such promising concepts for Season 3 and beyond but it was never meant to be. Maybe someday people will give another game that's like this a chance to shine.
