When Spock says the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, he's explaining the logic of his own personal self sacrifice. If you use that argument to justify sacrificing other people but not yourself, then you're just a sociopath. It's the difference between jumping on top of a grenade to save everyone around you at the cost of your own life, versus pushing someone else on top of a grenade so that he's the only one who dies. I don't think most people would consider both those options equally ethical.
@bofoshow5189
@bofoshow5189 2 жыл бұрын
Utilitarianism is based on the ethical viewpoint that raw numbers are the only valid lense to consider for acting towards a greater good. By definition it doesn’t differentiate whether it’s my life, your life, some random stranger. If you can sacrifice one to save 50, you do it every time and that would be ethical, under utilitarianism.

@@supertyrantkhan1878 But consider this, would you take organs from one healthy person which will kill them to save 5 people with failing organs that will die without a transplant? Kill one or let five die? It's the same logic on a utilitarian basis right? But the scenario is undeniably different. The train car dilenma proposes that there is no choice but one or the other, reality is not so cut and dry. For example you could wait for different people to show up with organs that the five dying patients need and save at least some of them instead of deeming it necessary to harvest organs from one person to save the five.

This is basically the trolley problem, would you pull the track to save 5 people instead of killing one. Most people would rather not flip the switch at all even if it led to everyone aboard dying. Ofc, this argument is more of a parallel for our current situation rather than comic book logic. Ofc they could easily conjure up a bunch of problems inside the narrative universe to wave away the issue, but theres a reason its brought up in the first place int he comics and it would defeat the point of dealing with a hard problem with no perfect solutions by just magic'ing it away with some plot device.

Yeah I’d probably would watch someone else if there was anyone else making these. Many people think many out ways the few but that’s been tried in history many time like the French Revolution. It always ends with the needs of the people who take control out ways everyone else. He talked about people don’t face a problem tell they have to but killing people to move forward leads to more and more people get “sacrificed”. When is it to many? If 80% is fine why not 90 or 99%. And what happens when you end up in the group to be killed. You said it was for the betterment of everyone else will you take a knee and except it. Or is that when it becomes a problem. Not to mention who decides who is needed. Theres a lot of people that would see KZbins as non essential and put Rob on chopping block almost first. Not to mention if you killed say 25% of the population, what happens to everything of where society is. That many people dying would lead to an almost total collapse of minder society and ways of living just from lack of transportation personal alone. It just doesn’t make sense to kill people to make way for the new when you need people to make the new.

I want to preface this with I haven't read past this point and I do not know what happens next but I do think it is important to actually make notice of the actual point of Dinosaurus, He is a Sociopathic abuser that likes to Kill people in mass (like the dinosaurs died) and gaslights Mark to make it seem acceptable, although there are ways to accomplish the same goals for someone of his intellect without anyone dying. He wants to "encourage humanity to fix it's own problems" but he creates so many issues once you actually consider the ramifications. It's really concerning that Rob doesn't see Dinosaurus as anything but a homicidal maniac. HE JUST KILLS MILLIONS OF PEOPLE AND THEN GASLIGHTS MARK INTO BELEIVING IT IS FOR THE GOOD OF "HUMANITY". Vegas, he could have built a fusion reactor plant and hacked into every grid and powered the entire continent. In relation to that him turning the city of vegans would make that area inhospitable even for the flora and fauna natural to the area. The increase of the heat via the reflection of the glass would cause insane weather conditions around the world due the the heat generated from that one huge glass sheet. I'm convinced he actually wants humanity to go extinct but hasn't figured out exactly how to do it without destroying the whole planet. This is not Utilitarianism he is causing mass extinction event intentionally for the future humanity that even he knows with in 10 or so generation will likely be entirely Viltrumite.

I always felt that subscribing this hard to utilitarianism showed a lack of ingenuity and problem solving. Yes, if someone puts a gun to my head and says choose between 1 person being killed or 20 and I have 30seconds, sure you can make an argument and it makes some sense. But all these situations are supposed to show how stupid these decisions are. Dinosaurus is too concerned with being right cause if he wanted to help his vast intelligence should allow him to come up with some solutions that at the least require less loss of life. Mark wouldn’t have had to to explain that to him. It’s a lazy argument based more on pride than practicality.

The guy creates tech that shifts tectonic plates and he can’t create something useful? The energy output alone for such a feat is staggering. He knows that insane tech exists out in space too. id argue that its not a bad solution considering that people will spend their resources up until the point that the consequences of their actions forces them to do different. Keep in mind that this part of the comic is also a criticism for the real world and the direction we are heading, and the consequence of what we are doing to the planet is that either everyone is going to die, or most are going to die earlier to save the rest and our perpetual future. Either we voluntarily reduce our population, or mother nature will do it for us and we will all starve to death in a post apocalyptic world with many our resources no longer replenishable. Even if he did provide all the energy that humanity would ever need, it doesn't guarantee we would spend it wisely, or that it wouldn't be hoarded by the powerful who wish to create a rift between have and have nots.

@@nickmagrick7702 it is a terrible solution ethically, morally, and logically. The same is true of the Vegas “solution”. It is all based on speculation. The history of mankind is rife with answers being found by way of technology. Even now people fight for renewable resources and have made a lot of head way. You also discount the creation of something truly visionary that would alter the entire situation. The doom and gloom around climate change is all speculation. Nobody knows to what level humankind is affecting the climate. Considering climate change is a passive phenomenon on earth with or without humanity it could well be very little. Killing off a large percentage of the population might kill off an important mind that may have created tech needed to solve the problem too. This is all a bit moot anyways considering they have an insane level of tech in the comic which I’m sure could easily help the situation yet he uses some to create havoc. His solutions are not valid ones. Another good point is raised by Rob himself, which refutes these inane claims. Humanity has a tendency to only learn through natural hardship. They do not learn what you wish them to through force, I.E.. Dinosaurus’ plan. They would merely come down hard on the mastermind and take measures to stop that sort of thing from ever happening. If one was to believe this then the whole plan is merely destruction of life. The most reasonable argument against utilitarian choices like this is the fact that they historically fail on such epic proportions that those who enact them are vilified forever, or made into heroic characters through propaganda like Mao.

@@nickmagrick7702 Keep in mind that killing people doesn't fix it either. When the Black Plague wiped out most of Europe, there was a period of economic boom afterwards. Less people, food became cheaper, services more important, it was for all extensive effects, a GREAT time (for the time period), despite all the death. But you know what else followed it? A MASSIVE population boom. I believe Game Theory actually did a video on this, where they used examples like the black plague to point out that even if Thanos snaps 50% of the population away, the benefits are only temporary and lead to a worst outcome overall. (Granted, doubling all supplies doesn't make it better, but you'd probably eat through it slower then if suddenly half the people were gone)

As a result everyone should be forbidden from using certain means barring anything but immediately dire circumstances. Even if the goal being worked for is a good one. The world isn't a ticking clock that one person can map out exactly. Even the best laid plans fail spectacularly due to a lack of info or misinterpretation of the facts. Not to mention the ultimate flaw of it... is it a greater good narrative to trade 1 life for 10? Yes, of course. No one will argue otherwise I don't think, but the problem becomes when *you're* one of the 10, or your family is one of the 10, your friends, etc. You can't trade lives so 'easily' as long as people have these connections. No one wants to be the one sacrificed, not really. So it either doesn't happen, or you have to force people to sacrifice themselves, and that point? Its terribly wrong morally. Dinosaurus is totally smart enough to just terraform other worlds, or even find methods to fix some of Earth's issues, so yeah, he's just small brained lol.

Mmhm. It’s basically all about flipping superhero tropes on their head while still being respectful about the superhero genre. The first was the Superman character turning out to be evil. Then there was Cecil. Then Oliver and Allen. And there’s also the no killing rule. How there have to be some exceptions for villains that are too powerful or too driven to be put away, but also at the same time shows the “if I were Batman I’d kill all my enemies” mindset can eventually corrupt you like how Mark was almost corrupted by his blue suit earlier on. It’s very philosophical from start to finish about things like this
