There are two cuts for these movies: The individual extended cut for each one and the Grindhouse cut. The Grindhouse version cuts some parts of Planet Terror and Death Proof so they could be put together without tiring the audience and justifies it with "Missing film roll" in the screen, or something like that, which is pretty funny and adds to the 70's trashy Drive-in/Grindhouse experience, in my opinion. And the Grindhouse includes intermissions and special trailers inbetween the films, directed by friends of Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez, like Eli Roth, Rob Zombie and Edgar Wright, and they are fucking hilarious, including one with Nicolas Cage. The Grindhouse cut is 3 hours long, so I highly recommend you watch it some time, like in Halloween.

@@jorylu666 Duel was Spielberg's first feature film, after directing numerous episodes for different tv-series. It was released on television in the US as a 75-minute "Universal Movie Of The Week", and was so extraordinarily received that he (Spielberg) was asked to film a couple of more scenes to make the movie longer, and make it eligible for theatrical release in Europe - where it was highly critically acclaimed. Spielberg's first theatrically released movie in the US was his second one, Sugarland Express. Additionally, I saw this in the theater. They did show both movies back to back, with fake trailers in between. The trailers were "Werewolf Women Of The S.S." which featured Nicholas Cage, and was directed by Rob Zombie. "Thanksgiving" which was an homage to holiday slasher films of the 1980's, and was directed by Eli Roth. Then there was "Don't" which was a hat tip to British haunting films of the 50's-80's, and was directed by none other than British director Edgar Wright, whom is known for "Shaun Of The Dead", "Hot Fuzz", "Baby Driver" and more recently "Last Night In Soho". "Don't" also featured Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost, whom were Edgar Wrights staples as the both were leads in his films "Shaun Of The Dead", "Hot Fuzz", and "At Worlds End".

In the theater, it started with the fake Machete trailer (director: RR), then continued with Planet Terror (director: RR), then the fake trailers for Werewolf Women of the SS (director: Rob Zombie), Don't (director: Edgar Wright), Thanksgiving (director: Eli Roth), and, in some lucky screenings, Hobo With a Shotgun (director:Jason Eisener, John Davies, and Rob Cotterill), then ended with Death Proof (director: QT).

The way I see it, the movie is cut off before they can deal with it. The editing proves that the movie is called "Thunderball" but has been cut up into "Death Proof" by an unscrupulous exhibitor. The fact that the movie ends really abruptly indicates to me that there was probably a coda that the editor cut off because he wanted the movie to be shorter so they can run an extra showing later in the day. It makes total sense that these badass ladies would drive the rickety car back and pick up their friend (who is likely boring the shit out of Hillbilly Guy by telling long-winded stories he doesn't want to hear), so the way I see it, the movie is cut off before the story is done and that's the point.

@@Blossora Yes I know. I wasn't talking about the real-life editor of DEATH PROOF (Sally Menke), I was talking about the fake editor the movie is implying--the one who cut out the "Thunderball" title card and replaced it with "Death Proof." Tarantino & Menke are deliberately editing the movie to make it look like someone else has edited the movie into a mostly incoherent mess with missing pieces. Those people were usually the grindhouse theater owners. That's whom I was referring to.

Tarantino owns the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles. It plays mostly old movies. Occasionally movies released the same year. Pre pandemic, when it was open, Grindhouse in its theatrical release would get played about once a month on weekend nights up until 2020.

These movies were released as a double feature in theaters. Robert Rodriguez actually wrote and/or directed the first and Tarantino was at the helm for Death Proof. Released as an homage to Drive-in double features of the past but audiences weren’t hip to that and they did release the movies independently shortly after, as I remember. Great review for a great flick.

The concept of the Grindhouse double feature hearkens back to the far away days of the Drive-In Theater. I'm not old enough to remember myself but from what I heard from older family it was all about getting together with your friends for a cheap movie where you could go park and be rowdy and watch something violent and raunchy. One of those nostalgia for a time you never got to experience. But this event did come out while I was in college and I did go see it in the theater. It was fun, but people were understandably less rowdy than at an outdoor venue.

I don't know how I forgot about this classic. I was on the edge of my seat when I first saw it, and re-watched it a few years ago, and it's still great. Kurt Russell was also in Breakdown (1997), which I thought was a good suspense/revenge style movie that's worth checking out. (Although it also starred J.T. Walsh, who sadly died in 1998.)

Oh! Brandon I don't know if someone else mentioned this but the way "Stuntman" Mike knew about "The Poem" was because Julia is a local D.J. in Austin . Julia was talking on the air about her friend Butterfly and the bet was open to anyone in Austin who would come up to Butterfly... hoping to get her friend a good time while she was visiting . Julia did explain to Butterfly about the bet at the bar Butterfly was given that margarita . That's why Mike was talking to Butterfly about being wounded... her feelings were a little hurt that she didn't get the attention she thought she would .

Fun Fact: On Zoe's Stunt scene, since she is a stunt actress, the first takes she tended to cover her face, as a stunt usually do when replacing an actor, then tarantino said to her that she dont need to cover, and the rest is that awesome stunt scene.
