Die Hard was always one of those movies I never felt a strong need to see. Like yeah, I'm sure Willis is a good wise-cracking all-American hero and Rickman is a great villain, but I felt like I knew what I was getting. And I'm just not the biggest action movie fan. But when I finally watched it a couple years ago, I was blown away. It is the action movie formula to a T, but it's done more perfectly than anything else I've seen. Surprisingly strong characters and well thought out action scenes. Incredible dynamics between characters. Truly unmatched.

I mean, that's kinda the thing about it though... almost all of those tropes that movies today copy - they all come from Die Hard. It was the first, and for like 10 years after it was a trope in Hollywood to have "Die Hard, but on a [insert situation or location]". But yea, the original Die Hard, Predator, Lethal Weapon, and Robocop... all so so good. Terminator 1/2, Alien and Aliens as well. It's actually both funny and really sad to see the sequels to almost all of these franchises, b/c they're so bad; not to mention all of the copies/rip-offs that try to just copy the action or gimmick without the character development or directing.

I have to disagree - it's not enough to save the day, it has to be ELLIS saving the day. I've known too many cokeheads not to think that credit and a promotion were more valuable to Ellis than saving a bunch of other people's lives. And Takagi's old office is vacant, right? A cutthroat businessman who lets Hans do all the throat-cutting for him - that's just how much smarter than everyone else Ellis thinks he is. His unshakable belief in his own superiority killed him, but at least he died feeling superior to everyone around him.

Ellis is such a bastard. He thought he could kill three birds with a single shot: Negotiate with the terrorist becoming the hero that liberated the hostages and be promoted, get John killed, and get John's girl. The fact that John has to take off Ellis's expensive Rolex from Holly's wrist for Hans to fall down is just poetic justice.

History lesson to young-uns: I remember the outrage when the trades announced Willis would star in this movie, for two reasons. First, he was "only" a TV actor at the time, when there was still a clear cut differentiation among TV, Hollywood and Broadway actors. "How dare this smarmy snot-nose nobody think he could just sashay his way into starring in a MAJOR Hollywood movie!" the noses-bent-out-of-shape crowd brayed over and over. Second, he was to be paid, in a Dr. Evil voice, "the astronomical sum of FIVE MILLION DOLLARS!" That payday was unheard of back then for established stars, and then this "TV actor" (Yuck!) just waltzes in and grabs five million bucks. Oh, the Hollywood types were pissed off. But Willis's fee opened the floodgates. I believe by early 2000s, top stars were getting $20 million PLUS a percentage of box office gross receipts, not profits. The Hollywood "establishment" shut up quick when the movie came out and dazzled crowds and critics alike ... and in those pre-Internet days, or early Internet days, they were able to walk away from their insults.

I remember the 80s action movies being dominated by the likes of Stallone and Schwarzenegger, two bodybuilder types which kind of encapsulated the 80s action hero. There were countless other actors who tried to do the bodybuilder action role thing but none were as successful as the two I mentioned. Die Hard was a breath of fresh air to have a blockbuster action movie being led by an everyman. He's slightly balding and doesn't have the physique of a body builder. And at that point, Willis was only known as a tv actor.

The trivia behind this movie is amazing. They did the helicopter shot in one take - it’s all they could get away with because the building used for nakatomi plaza is a real building in century city (Fox plaza) that was under construction at the time (which is why there are so many scenes in unfinished floors!), and nearby LA residents and businesses were furious about the explosions and shit already. This is my favorite Christmas movie. It’s not Christmas if I don’t watch it with the soft Christmas tree lights behind me, for real.

I know two fun facts about this movie: 1) The blanks used for the guns were specialized to give off brighter muzzle flashes. That also made them louder than usual blanks and case permanent damage to Bruce Willis' ears. 2) The scene where they dropped Hans, the stunt coordinator told Rickman that he would count to three and drop him. When it was time to shoot and the cameras started rolling, he just let him go without counting. The face Hans had was Alan Rickman's actual "OH S**T!" face 😂.

One lesser known tidbit about this movie is that in the original novel the terrorist leader is a totally flat character, so the entire character of Hans Gruber was created from the ground up and then handed off to an actor who'd only done stage work and was very nervous about working with cameras. And then Alan Rickman became a legend his first time out.

The only real issue with 4 for me, is the scene with the jet on the freeway. I can rationalise the car/helicopter incident enough that I can ignore it. But the jet, with its super destructive looong range weaponry, just zips right up to him UNDERNEATH the elevated road. To the movies credit though, Willis does get fucked up and doesn't seem too super cop-ish aside from that. Unlike the movie that followed, which must not ever be named.

FYI the roof top scene of Hans and McClain was an added scene. It started during shooting other scenes. At lunch Adam Rickman would do "California" accents. Which had Willis cracking up. So the went to the director and told him they needed a snece to show off this talent. Within a few days the scene was written and becomes a very important role in the movie. The fall scene. Adam Rickman was dropped about 10 into an air bag from a trap door. In their practices of shooting the scene. The would open the door on the count of five. When actually filming the director told Rickman everything would be filmed as practiced and drop him on five. The director had the stunt supervisor drop him on three. So the fear the runs across Hans's face was actually real.
