Rich, sorry to hear things are not working out for you. On the other hand, you may have helped other shooters avoid the expensive mistake of going down the same path. Sadly, sometimes, you don't know how things "fit" until you live with it for a time. I noticed at the local shop the 29X was noisy, easy to tell while shooting in an indoor range. When I decided to go "faster" than my KI X1, I opted for the TenPoint TX440. The TX440 is among the quietest crossbows I have shot. You can shoot other arrows in the TX440, you just have to use the HPX nock. I haven't tried lighted nocks in the TX440. When I want to use a lighted system, I just switch back to the X1. A friend has had good luck with lighted HPX TenPoint arrows. By the way, I am eagerly waiting for your Safari 92 press videos with your X1. Those should be helpful to lots of shooters using crossbow of similar design and shape.

You are not alone, in my neck of the woods at local archery shops you will find many used Ravins for sale. As you know, I have been using a compound bow since 1983. Like you, in 2010 I was introduced to the crossbow world. I wanted a crossbow that was as close to a compound as possible "less is More". I bought an Ibex by Excalibur. Yes, it was slow, loud and wide. Fast-forward to 2022. I purchased a Tenpoint Turbo M1. The Tenpoint is quit, fast, very small and made 100% in Ohio. I love it so much, last season i never used my compound! Sadly, I would ditch that thing before it gets worse and buy a Tenpoint that shots 400/450fps. Trust me

Rich, I have a buddy that has had an archery shop for years and is now a regional rep for a major manufacturer. He told me that Ravins are the most problematic of all the crossbows with Excalibur being the least. It stands to reason that the more complicated and higher performance, the more it’s prone to problems.
@chrisruzsa27982 ай бұрын
@@scubajeeper1 it’s because they use the cheapest parts possible to have the costs down. That is unfortunately their problem. Their crossbows can not handle being used that’s why they tell you without directly telling you to only do 5 shots a year because after 5 years that’s 25 shots and now the warranty is up with no problems. Now you pay for all the problems that will come lol. I would also like to point out they are the only crossbows that jam and have videos to try and walk you through the jam, as well as the only crossbows to explode in a case. Do not have them cocked for longer than you need they can not handle that either.

Funny thing is I bought the Tenpoint RS 470 back in 2020 as I turned 50 and it was by birthday present to myself. Tenpoint had not added the aluminum bushing to their arrows at that time and I had alot of issues. The bow blew the string three times and with repeated calls to Tenpoint they finally replaced the bow which was not the issue. inspecting the arrows the bow was actually shoving the nock into the shaft when the bow blew. Tenpoint did take care of me but never would say the arrow was the issue, but told me to start using the arrows with the aluminum insert. As an engineer it was not hard to figure out that they put that bow out before fully testing.

If the lighted nock is similar to the TenPoint alpha nock, you might attempt to remove the tip and get a small diameter steel rod (not a coat hanger). go in through the tip and attempt to push the lighted nock back. Is it possible to switch over to the 10point world with the Alpha nock setup ? I wonder since you've already removed the aluminum bushing if a 10point alpha bushing would work ? sometimes to remove those bushing, you take a can of compressed air and turn it upside down spray into the front and quick freeze the nock to remove it. I'm new to crossbows, but one thing I know is having confidence in the equipment we use. I would sell the raven, and try another brand that has similar speed. I believe you will overcome the flinching, by using the crossbows you have confidence in. You may have to mentally talk yourself through your shots at first again, but with practice you will create the right habits again to hit your target without flinching.
@CamaroZ28Nut32 ай бұрын
Tenpoint is similar in that they don't specify that you have to use their arrows, but you do have to use their Alpha- series of nocks or it voids the warranty. While I haven't had as much difficulty with them as you're having with the Raven nocks, the new Alpha-blaze lighted nocks are much tighter in the aluminum bushings than the older Alpha-brite lighted nocks with their plastic bushings. I've switched back to my older arrows with Alpha-brites, and am much happier for it. That said my Wicked Ridge Raider 400 is still only a 400fps crossbow. I don't know how the plastic bushings hold up to a 450-500+ fps crossbow.

Hey Rich, I been following your channel for several years, but just subscribed to report my Ravin lighted nock story. 2 years ago with my R29X I had a similar experience, but with an actual Ravin factory lighted nock arrow the XK5, with the bushing. Basically the lighted nock disintegrated during launch. Pieces of the nock hit me around the eye but no serious injuries. The arrow did actually launch and hit the target, but the force of the string bent the bushing forming a sudo nock groove. I did report this to Ravin with no reply. Since then I ONLY shoot solid Ravin non-lighted nocks, which provides me a better peace of mind when pulling that trigger. I miss my lighted nocks, but treasure my health even more. I have pics of the arrow, if you’re interested.

My R26 is deadly accurate and is easy to hold on a deer for long periods of time when needed since it’s lighter and a smaller frame. I agree they are a bit loud, but I don’t have issues flinching with the r26. I do not shoot Ravin arrows, I build my own from zombie slayers, a black eagle aluminum nock insert and Burt coyote luminok. They work fantastic and they extinguish easily. I agree there are probably quieter and less maintenance bow out there but I can’t imagine hunting with another. Just my humble opinion with a sample size of 1, lol Hope you get it figured out!

This is why I didn’t end up going with a ten point nitro 505. Being a heavy arrow guy, and an arrow tinkerer, I talked with ten point about shooting heavy arrows out of the 505 and they said it would blow the string. Hello Rich. I tried posting a few days ago. But I think I forgot to hit the comment button. So if this appeared before sorry for seeing it twice. Also, don't know whether it is proper etiquette to mention other channels. Anyway... On another channel that deals a lot on Ravin crossbows there is I think some very good news for you. About building Zombie Slayer arrows. And where to get the bushings to do so. So you can modify the Luminok to use with these. Also Ravin does sell 500gr (400gr arrow + 100gr tip) arrows. I use these a lot as practice arrows with the thinking that the heavier arrows absorb more energy to help with the life of the bow. As far as the lighted nocks, I have not had any trouble turning them off (OK maybe a little bit) using the Luminok arrow puller. Ravin makes an arrow puller also that works turning the nock off. The only problem I have is pulling a practice broadhead tipped arrow from the foam target. I am also shooting a Ravin R29x boww. Any suggestion on a target would be great.
Good video, think I will be sticking with swat x 1 but I am trying a flat lumenoks.

The crossbows producing super speeds at 450 fps or more are a different animal. The original crossbow designs of Ravin from the original designers include the R9, R15, R20 and finally the R10. After that the original developers sold out. Quality control has changed.

Check out the ten point alpha blaze nocks they also require the aluminum bushing and are designed for the higher speeds and kinetic energy. May be suitable for ravin.

Firmly grasp the nok using the arrow puller using your thumb and index finger. I use both hangs. Aggressively whip the arrow up and down and they open up enough to shut off. Ravin has an instructional video showing the process. Piece of cake.

If I can't pull them out with pliers, I can't see how that's going to work. And I did try that, I have both pullers.

Tenpoint is kinda similar if you want lighted nocks you have to use the alpha brites and a few years back they made the alpha blaze and it’s really similar to that raven luminock but it’s easily removable, it also has a aluminum bushing for the faster speeds

At least the alpha-nock let's you pull the battery out and turn them on and off.

I don't like the fact that when you are cranking or un-cranking the crossbow you can't stop without letting off the little switch on the butt-stock. I had one and my hand slipped off of the crank handle by the time i let up on the switch that handle probably spun around 5 or 6 times and hit the stock and broke it, and hit the scope and dented it, and hit my finger and ended up losing my finger nail.
@charlesbeaver56652 ай бұрын
When you crank any of the Ravins to cock it you can absolutely stop and it WILL NOT unwind
@Deathbybunjie2 ай бұрын
I don't think that happens with this model

My new ten point 380 is deadly accurate and way faster than my old Barnet, but I am not comfortable hunting with it yet, so my trusty Barnet is still my go to for whitetails season which opens here in NJ next Saturday.

I think you should wear earplugs or comtacs when shooting that crossbow, and make it exclusively a long range hunting/trophy crossbow.

I have seen posts about Firenocks. I just received a packet; but, I haven’t had a chance to install them. I’m using a R-500. Let me know your thoughts. I seem to remember you have some experience with them.

I know you are not giving up but maybe Ravin isn't the brand you thought it was. I have a TenPoint 430 and love the crossbow. I bought new arrows from Wyvern with no issues. I amshooting around 410 with 465 grain arrows. Good price point and has plenty of energy and momentum of .8 . You convinced me to put on the Oracle X and I have nt looked back since. Sorry to hear about the issues you are having but if you are not happy now it won't just go away. It needs to be part of your family.

Heavier arrows should help with your ringing ears. From my experience with ravins, go 525 grains or more. For your search for nocks, Firenock is the first that comes into my mind. But you have some experience with them, and probably took that thought already into account.

I’d get rid of it if you can’t do what you like to do with the arrows. Hope nobody was hurt when it blew apart.

You could probably source some of the aluminum inserts to build some arrows if you wanted to but if it’s just not comfortable to shoot use what is

You can turn off the factory lighted arrows but it's not pretty. I literally take a pair of pliers and pull it back to shut it off. It mars the knock and it's never the same but it does work. I tend to use the lighted ones sparingly because of that...ie no lighted arrows on morning hunts.
@Deathbybunjie2 ай бұрын
I did resort to pliers but it pulled the whole bushing out

That was the equivalent of a dry fire when that arrow blew up.... I would be very uneasy about a ravin, the early ones blew up pretty often. Actually surprised the bow stayed together. Short power stroke bows that launch heavy arrows at high speed inherently have this trait. Longer power stroke bows typically get the higher speeds with lower poundage limbs because the arrow acceleration is slower. That results in less perceived recoil, noise and lower lb limbs to achieve similar speeds. Hard to beat a scorpyd fir those reasons.

I went ahead and bought a ten point viper 415. Loved the ravin but couldn’t swing the 2k. Really love the crank system on the ten point but what sold me was the scope. Super nice bow….. would I trade it for a 29x? Yeah probably

I don't flinch at all and it perplexes everyone watching me shoot. .357 Magnum, .45 ACP, .40 S&W, 357 SIG, 10mm, .44 Magnum, .460 S&W Magnum, .308 Win, .300 Win Mag, 12 gauge 3" Magnums...whatever it may be that day or night. That comes from many decades of shooting sometimes every single day and always at least once a week. My compound and traditional recurve bows and modern crossbows are no different. I remember when I was a little boy about 5 or 6 years old my Dad handing over his Colt Detective Special and S&W Model 36 & 60 .38 Special snub nose revolvers to me. I suspect that is what started it.....scare yourself "straight" or desensitize yourself. The same thing as people who professional race at high speeds or a seasoned Cop on the beat 20+ years. It's also the same as paratroopers jumping out of a perfectly good aircraft at high altitude. RIP Dad Miss you!
@jeffreycollier2873Ай бұрын
The speed is nice, I guess. Not sure it’s needed with the Oracle X though. As far as the flinching goes, I think it’s something you could train yourself and get used to the noise. Not sure I would count on using that crossbow this season if it’s messing with your developed shooting habits.

Do to ruptured tricep tendon now in both arms I'm forced to a crossbow. My wife got me a r29x. I had no idea a crossbow could be this fast and accurate. It is loud but i don't think that is going to matter with the fps and accuracy. + its very narrow . Surgery on my right arm now next week, hope to be healed enough to hunt wth it this season 🙏 GOD BLESS and happy hunting

@huntnfishnuts58802 ай бұрын
If your getting the old flintlock flinch from shooting that raven I would be trading it in for something else that your more comfortable with. I remember years ago Easton used those nock inserts in some of there acc and ASE arrows for Olympic recurves to make the end of the shaft stronger and to hold the nock. I think your speed at 400+ fps is negated by the noise as at a longer distance the deer is going to react to the noise quicker than the arrow can get there.
@patrickborgerding8681Ай бұрын
GrowingDeerTV has some information that shows that when the deer has their head down, they can duck further down. When the deer has their head up they don’t duck as much. Dr. Ed Ashby found that two blade, fixed blade, single bevel broadheads can have better penetration.

This isn't just a burnt coyote issue. Ravins' own lighted nocks blow up quite often. I have shot the R29 for 4 or 5 years now and have loved every minute of it, but i will never try lighted nocks with mine. The forums are just too full of people blowing their bows up with them. I would rather just lose an arrow than lose the limbs.... Sorry to hear about your troubles, but if lighted nocks are your thing, Ravin probably isn't going to be the right fit.
@olehemlock2 ай бұрын
I’m not sure but I think Firenock has an arrow specifically designed for the Ravins.
