I was just looking through the comments to see if anyone thought to mention his and Janet jackson having been a couple when they were both so very young .. would have been surprised if there hadn’t been at least .. one mention of their connection!😉👍I agree that his music had that Latin sound/ feel a kinship with Gloria Estefans.. whereas Janet’s always imo had a bit more ‘oomph/ edge’ as she was beginning to claiming her power/ individual place in music (to not ‘always’ have to be automatically associated with that of her brothers! 👊 😉😆👍

You are so right Lex, about music and dancing being everywhere in the 80's. Everybody was club hopping and dancing. Cars use to bump music with after market 15, 20 inch woofers. People would just bust out and Break Dance on the streets. Boom Boxes were everywhere, it was like a none stop party. Dancing was so big in the 80's that they opened the 1984 Olympics with Breaking and street dancing. I can remember Breakers preforming for the Pope.

Now I was a pre-teen in the late 70's and a teen in the 80's. I could tell you a lot of kids were dancing and roller skating at that time. But in my family, we had a lot of innocent fun. We would dance and play music without drinking and clubs. Those days are over. I could also hear gun shots if I step outside after 10 pm. But DeBarge's music was very likeable to me because he reminded me a little like Michael Jackson.
@Critical_Thinker8582 жыл бұрын
The 70's and 80s were full of "feel good" dance party songs like this.There was YMCA by the Village People, Lionel Richey's "All Night Long" and :"Dancing' on the Ceiling". Celebration from Kool and the Gang. "Get Into the Groove" by Madonna, Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine with "Conga" and "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You." We had our problems in the 80s, a lot of objectification of women in movies, music, and TV, cocaine and drug abuse was becoming more widespread, and millions died from cigarettes and drunk driving. But there was a lot of good clean fun too. And this, though I wasn't a fan at the time, was a song celebrating good clean fun. Wish America could forget about our worries and leave them all behind about now and dance until the morning light. What a profound concept in 2022!

The DeBarge family are the children of Etterlene DeBarge (née Abney), a Black American gospel singer born in Royal Oak, Michigan in 1935 and Robert Louis DeBarge, Sr. (1932-2009), an American soldier of French and English descent born in Cicero, Illinois . They married when Etterlene was 17, a year after the death of her father James Abney, a church choir leader and peanut retailer. They separated in the mid-1970s and divorced in 1974. Etterlene remembers Robert DeBarge, Sr. as physically and emotionally abusive to her and the children, and said he used her youth, the absence of her father, and continuous pregnancy to control her. DeBarge, Sr. has been characterized as "domineering and physically abusive to his wife," and some of the DeBarge children have accused him of having sexually abused them.[1] Bunny Debarge, the eldest, recalls being sexually abused by him between the ages of seven to 13. The group, named for their shared surname, hailed from the East Side of Detroit, where the siblings were born and raised; they later relocated to Grand Rapids, Michigan. Members included sister Etterlene (or "Bunny") and brothers Mark (or "Marty"), William (or "Randy"), Eldra (or "El"), and James (younger siblings Jonathan (or "Chico"), Darell, and Carol "Peaches" DeBarge are also singers though not with the group).

Per Songfacts This was the biggest hit for the family group DeBarge, who on this track were fronted by the falsetto-voiced El DeBarge, who would later have solo success with the hits "Who's Johnny" (#3 US, 1986) and another Diane Warren penned song, "The Heart Is Not So Smart" (#75 US, 1986). On the Rhythm Of The Night album, El was joined by his sister Bunny and brothers James (who was briefly married to Janet Jackson in 1984), Marty and Randy.

In the 80s people came alive at night it was exciting just walking on the streets.I think cell phones and being online took that away people are so preoccupied and not present.Phones taught people to no longer be in the moment and to avoid life.We now have an epidemic of loneliness online connection can’t replace face to face connection.Gun violence fear has made people stay in their car order in ,buy from Amazon,watch Netflix just stay home and stay on your own bubble and fear strangers.When people get close to death they realize all that really matters in life is your relationships,the feeling you get with others but phones are teaching us how to avoid connection.

It was the till the late eighties/early 90s when everything start turned “hard“ to work the rhythm of music was replaced with the rhythm of gunshots and people won the beef and brawl every time they went out! So sad, you rarely see that anymore where people just get together and just have a good time without drama!
