The Irish dairy farmer is so well mannered and brilliant for being open enough to travel to speak about this. I have been vegan for some time and he is a rare gem! Ed did a great job providing this safe platform to have this discussion. If more people were as civil and brave as this, a lot of problems would be solved. Both deserve some major respect.

While the nutritional science speaks to the truth that not only is dairy unnecessary, but harmful to human health I sat here and warmly listened to him. I think this farmer was very brave to come on this podcast and discuss these things with Ed. I loved that they were so respectful to each other. When we see farmers like this lad talking, we do need to realise that farmers have been doing what they do for generations and we have to have some sympathy and understanding for the fact that their livelihoods are at risk. It is discussions like this that help to move the argument forward. Mutual Respect and conversation is the way to go. But I do agree that it is a shame that sometimes farmers do not understand all the science out there, and some are evil to their animals. Then we have no option but to expose those cruel people.

In the future, times will change and maybe you'll find that you can live happily and conveniently off of a vegan lifestyle. If you truely believe raising herbivores on grasslands is important to the environment, turning a small farm into a sanctuary is perfect. You'd never have to send them to slaughter and we'd be happy to donate.

@Annie Well, I actually GREW UP on a cattle ranch, and have witnessed 'orphans' which are bottle fed, for example, away from the rest of the herd. And when they are returned to the herd, when their gut is ready for fibre, they usually adapt and integrate with the other cattle within a day or so.. I've never seen an orphan show the type of social distress that that article is alluding/hypothesizing.. HOWEVER, when, I personally, became over- attached, over friendly with the orphans, then I have witnessed more stress accrued by the orphan when returned to the herd - this was due to TOO much human inyerference/pampering etc. These are complex animals, that few people really understand, since 99% or so of the global population has spent any significant amount of time with the. This is one reason that the vegan agenda is readily persuasive to the generally urban public.~

@Annie That's nice.. they're an urban university, not actually a farm. If these calves were significantly stressed, they would become sick, costing the farmer (usually a stressed bovine will develop pneumonia, which can become quickly fatal, especially for weak calves). So if this 'early separation', was significantly stressful, there would be many sick calves, which there rarely is, in properly managed operations. Animals don't lie, if they dont feel well mentally physically, they will show obvious distress and usually become physically sick rapidly. So it is never in the farmers best interest to distress them. Just how it works - is natural law of creatures..)

Meat production can easily by lowered by 50% and there still will be no shortage. But due to the Mansholt-Plan (a food variant of the Schuman-Plan, created to prevent future famine in Europe), farmers will always overproduce. There are other options in the 21st century, but it just shows that the overconsumption of meat has economic roots, and should be countered with an economic sollution. Vegan activists offer no such sollution, which is why they're so inefficient with their protests. Veganism is the future though, and it will eventually happen, but at a current rate it will still take at least 50 years.

Ed deals with non-vegans as a doctor deals with their patients. The doctor knows that if someone is ill it's the disease which is problematic not the patient themselves. Ed knows non-vegans are not the disease. 'Being' non-vegan and the psychological conditioning is and hence he doesn't target them out, he targets their acts because he like mostly everyone was once a non-vegan himself and hence he knows how and what works and what doesn't work to convince people. It is amazing speaking to so many vegans because they believe the perfect world exists. If life is so sacred you may do no harm in anyway. No infrastructure of any kind, no farming of any kind, no releasing of pollutants into the air, water or ground if you even suspect it will harm anything. You must only take what nature produces. That would be as moral as you could get. Go all the way, don't compromise at all. But ordinary people live a life of practicality. Mining is essential but virtually every month someone dies, it shows up on the reports and the wider effects of it are there is always some environmental impact that causes animal lives to to be lost as well. The oil industry is not much better. We should stop both just to feel better about ourselves. Who feels good about using anything from these industries? But so much comes from these industries. We could be one with nature if we so wished foregoing all comfort of modern life. Finding that food, work and pension in the abundance that nature provides. @Don't Eat Animals It is a philosophy based on feelings and comfort rather than on practicality. A vegan might well say they are prepared to die by refusing drugs that have been tested on animals but then when it concerns their child they will relent.

great discussion! basically boils down to the dairy farmer being wrong about health and the environment and when Ed corners him on whether he would go vegan if they weren't concerns, he said yes. So by virtue of him being simply being factually mistaken on those topics, he should go vegan by his own standards.

@@ryanblack9876 I'm going off what the science says. you have to skew the interpretation of the science or look through a very distorted lens indeed to come to the conclusion that animal agriculture is better for the environment than growing potatoes for example. I worked out the caloric efficiency in one of my videos and it was some hilariously large amount more efficient to grow potatoes than eat beef. In terms of health, the arguments on the table are basically "nutrient density tho" which is essentially just "smaller portion sizes are better tho". OK, says who? I like the amount of food I eat. Extremely weak argument imho.

Be a major problem food miles would increase deforestation would increase waste land would increase honey bees would die increase use of chemicals on plants increase of gmos and many more increase of carbon footprint it uses up more carbon for a portion of calfornian avacodos than one portion of British beef buy local support your local economy

In terms of restoring grassland, you can certainly do so without grazing animals as they are the ones preventing ecological succession. Yes, it takes a lot of time and we can help the process with manual intervention but definitely not with grazing animals. I feel like the point about avocados is somewhat valid in terms of airmiles but one can ready buy Spanish avocados fairly widely (coop, morrisons and a local grocers near me sells them) and its possible to grow them in countries with similar climes.

There are nutrients in plants that we don't get from flesh no matter how much we eat and saying that you have to eat enough to maintain health is common sense and applies to every diet but it says nothing about the science of the individual diet or the foods that are given up. I’ve been to a small scale dairy farm in Northern Ireland. I don’t live there, I’m from a large city in another country. I will never forget the look of fear on those cows when I said I wanted to see the cows and the owner yelled at them to stop moving so I could pet them. I said forget it and it’s fine. This is how a chat and debate should happen, both people being very understanding and respectful so you can properly just talk about important things. You definitely made Ryan think a lot about all of this. As always though, you can see how conflicted he is about a lot of this like with the way he's trying to cling on to eating animal flesh with almost every point he makes it shows how desensitised he is with what happens on those dairy farms and believes that there's such a thing as "Humane" slaughter. The way he talks about the speciesism is just so widespread because of the media brainwashing people to love dogs and cats and just eat everything else, unless it's Asia, where they even eat dogs aswell. It gives people that consume animal products such a disconnect, I'm living with one that's this shut off, my Dad, and it's aggravating because deep down he loves animals. I asked my Dad a while ago how would he feel if he was out somewhere and some cruel knob head was just punching a pig or a cow in the face, I asked if he'd try and do something to stop it, he said it would make him really uncomfortable and he probably would try and help the cow or pig... but he still eats dead pig and dead cow stuff. Just doesn't see it and when I try and start talking about it with him now he just shuts off. You've given him so much positive information but I'm still not sure if he's that open to it. It's a lot of conditioning to get through even though he's very young. Around the 57:00 minute mark it was a bit odd to hear you use that euphemism with him, the abattoir, instead of slaughter house. That vertical farming sounds awesome, that's the way to go. Brilliant podcast, and Greggs' vegan sausage rolls are bloody lush =)

I’m not a vegan or vegetarian and I read your comment. I think asking society in general to make a huge dietary and lifestyle change suddenly is never going to happen. Food culture and cooking is a huge deal for many, as is just the issue of affordability of nutrient dense foods. As far as your dad goes, many people, like myself, do feel an animal can be humanely killed for meat. If I’m hunting and shoot a deer, elk, or antelope for food, I make a clean kill and that’s it for the animal. I practice my marksmanship and I have not failed to make a clean kill once. I am adamantly opposed to animal cruelty. Because of where I live and the choices available to me I’m able to eat plant products that are responsibly farmed, and obtain my meat from what I consider to be ethical sources. Your dad would likely feel the same.

Retail demand and the people’s demand... if everyone stopped consuming/using dairy and meat tomorrow the demand would be non existent therefore stopping the production of it but that will never happen, Rome wasn’t built in a day, it has to be a step by step process. But I feel, having had relatives of mine in the farming industry, that the best way forward is to have conversations in a bid to create understanding.

I live in Ireland what the lad here said about hedgerows and meadow maintenance is half true. In my parish the farmers pump water from the river, there is far more grazed land than meadows, they have also being decreasing due to construction of more homes in the countryside. Plus the uplands keep getting burned with gorse fires which tend to get out of control often. We basically have a larger percentage of unnatural grazed farmland than natural meadows especially down here in Co. Kerry. Hedgerows are being cut during nesting season by the local council.

It might be weird to recommend but you should react(maybe on live stream) to an episode of "yakusoku neverland" or "the promised neverland" (english title). This is the synopsis: Surrounded by a forest and a gated entrance, the Grace Field House is inhabited by orphans happily living together as one big family, looked after by their "Mama," Isabella. Although they are required to take tests daily, the children are free to spend their time as they see fit, usually playing outside, as long as they do not venture too far from the orphanage-a rule they are expected to follow no matter what. However, all good times must come to an end, as every few months, a child is adopted and sent to live with their new family... never to be heard from again. However, the three oldest siblings have their suspicions about what is actually happening at the orphanage, and they are about to discover the cruel fate that awaits the children living at Grace Field, including the twisted nature of their beloved Mama. Spoiler: Well, the kids are basically high quality cattle. It think it does show that even with best care and conditions, killing is still a bad thing. Even if these are kids, everybody knows that sentient beings don't want to be killed and trying to let's say make killing as humane as possible, there is still death involved. I think it is very fitting that the word humane has a definition that ultimately describes veganism: Acting in a manner that causes the least harm to people or animals. Even though we do it for the animals because they have no voice, I am concerned for both sides. I wish every living being on this world a fullfilled and healthy life. To me we are the same. Living, breathing, feeling and wanting to enjoy our time we have on this earth.
