I became a vegetarian about 27 years ago then a vegan 11 years ago. It wasn't for my health or social political reasons, I'm more of a conservative leaning individual. It was because I had an epiphany that animals truly suffer because of our diet. I tried to ignore it at first but even though I could not see this suffering I knew it was going on behind closed doors. I was warned that my health would be affected negatively but I could not continue to contribute to this suffering. I eventually came to the realization especially after I became a vegan that my health actually improved by this way of eating.

One thing I've learned from doing customer service is BE CONFIDENT. One month after being on the phone, I had people tell me I sounded like I knew what I was talking about and I must have been there for a long time. We have the easiest and hardest job in the world. Ethics and science are on our side. Most people are already vegan deep in their hearts. The hard part is bringing it out and holding them accountable for the suffering they not only cause animals but to people as a consequence.

Ethics and science yes, and by that vegans display exponential growing empathy. And we only need about 5-10% going vegan and the rest will follow. Because we have the pieces to the puzzle that fits in further evolving the humane part in humans 🧩 🏞️🌍 🖼️

Are ethics on your side? Would any reasonable person say that the typical vegan diet is more ethical than the diet of first nations peoples? Probably not. Is there any scientific literature to support the assertion that eating animals is immoral? Probably not. So ethics and science isn't on your "side". Science and ethics dont take sides, the truth is the truth, even if you ignore it.
@suicune2001
@suicune2001 Жыл бұрын
@@rorylee3582 Yes, a reasonable person who knows the facts would in fact agree a vegan diet is more ethical. The USDA, Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and WHO all agree eating a vegan diet is perfectly fine. Since we don't need to eat animals, that means killing and eating them is purely done for fun. Which means, we're causing the suffering and death of tens of billions of animals every year for sh1ts and giggles. If a bunch of meat-eaters get upset some football guy kicked a cat, then they should be foaming at the mouth for the sh1t done to farm animals. On top of that, our callousness towards animals for our own greed is hurting us. Not only is it bad for us nutritionally, it's destroying the planet, causing pandemics like COVID-19, gives us other zoonotic diseases like salmonella and E. coli, and is creating antibiotic resistance. There is already antibiotic resistant salmonella. The CDC says antibiotic resistance is killing a million people a year. At its current rate, we'll have no antibiotics by 2050 and then deaths due to infection will skyrocket to 10 million a year. Animal agriculture is a large driver in antibiotic resistance. So yeah. Unless you think causing suffering and death to both animals and humans for fun is ethical, being vegan is by far more ethical.

Wow, that must have been hard to be vegan back then! What made you choose veganism at that time? There's so much more information available and food options now but I know it wasn't always like that. I didn't even know about the cruelty behind dairy and eggs until I looked it up online and in documentaries. It's not the kind of thing that's usually discussed or easily found in libraries in my experience. Even a lot of vegetarians still don't understand. :(

Of course the more I learned about the cruelty to all life and the destruction of Nature made it clear I could never turn back. The level of health I experience every day is worth it. In his early 20’s my son went vegan for the animals and told me about Earthling Ed videos. I watched them and instantly went vegan myself. I tell you this because we were eating only plant-based foods the first 6 years of my son’s life. He asked why we started eating cheese. It was because I didn’t know what was happening in the animal farming industry. I just knew that all the grains and water that went into getting one hamburger could feed a dozen people or more. Once I learned the rest of the truth - about animal suffering - I never put another molecule of animal in my mouth again. We resumed eating cheese when he was 6 because I got tired, started ordering pizza, and didn’t know that #dairykills. And I just learned that meat and dairy (especially cheese) is considered addictive by neuroscientists, based on brain scans and dopamine levels. So how do we free ourselves from this deadly addiction? Dr. Neal Barnard (board certified in psychiatry and neurology and president of Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine) and Dr. Anna Lembke (board certified psychiatrist and Chief of the Stanford Addiction Medicine Dual Diagnosis Clinic) say that “cold turkey” (refrain and maintain) is typically more effective than moderation, and it takes 3 weeks for taste buds to change and reward (dopamine) pathways to reset. For the greatest possibility of success, Dr. Barnard recommends: 1. Make sure your reason (your “why”) for quitting is identified. 2. Before you start, take a week to make a list of replacement foods. What might you substitute for the thing you’re giving up? (Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has a free app to make planning simple - www.pcrm.org/news/news-releases/21-day-vegan-kickstart-program-launches-new-website-and-phone-app 3. Eat plant-based for 3 weeks Rather than feeling like a victim who has no control, we can eat as much as we like as often as we like - of plant-based foods. Once we are freed from our addiction, we can adjust the quantities and timings of meals as needed for individual circumstances. In this video called “The Cheese Trap,” Dr. Barnard explains how addictive and deadly dairy is. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6Wuepp6g5mId7csi=_GPKvGWYS8k73smT (The loss of life from dairy alone is higher than cigarettes, alcohol, cocaine, heroin, fentanyl and all the wars in the history of mankind combined.) Thanks for all your wonderful work that I am following and recommending for years. I know how pioneering uncomfortable ideas means being a nutrition scientist for 30 years, advertising whole food plant based diet medically adapted to individuals (not all body types can easily shift). I have been privileged to see the profound transformative effect of professional fasting cures on the awareness- an elegant way to help people connect to their soul. Many people are so disconnected to themselves that empathy for other beings is difficult . I would like to emphasize the importance of professional consulting for vegans because it is not what you eat, but what your body makes of it that counts . I have seen many giving up because of poor individual adaptation,.And as a mother a get many questions and see the insecurity around veganism- it is not enough just to shift to processed meat substitutes as you of course know Eating habits are a tricky thing- craving has to do with habits and microbiome Please also insist on chemical free farming, for species loss in conventional Industrial farming of plants is huge, And the microbiome can be damaged- of both soil and gut bacteria Advertising the magical healing world of plants is my mission- . Having worked with thousands of patients and being a female David against the Goliath of food industry and agrobusiness I see a danger of trashing the vegan path by the same billions of dollars advertising processed vegan food - sugar, soft drinks, fried veggies , white flower and additives- all vegan. I will do my very best to help veganism to be magic, not tragic. And I hope we will be more in the medical field to help as well. The core problem besides unawareness of animal torture is also: it is not the political goal to have a healthy society- illness is big business. And I just wish that the "new normal" I am advertising is a truly healthy one- because once eating habits (including sugar craving) are established, it is very hard to change them. Let us shine in sparkling health and help each other to cook deliciously AND healthy- after all these years of being a small minority amongst health professionals I thank this young generation from my heart for their efforts. My two young adult children walk this walk, too. All the best to you!

Excellent interview, Ed and Robbie! Thank you for posting such helpful information. Unfortunately, I have one small suggestion. Although I realize that Plant Based News has a primary focus on animal welfare which is essential, I do not feel that the one pillar has to ignore the others: health, environment, and food security. As part of the environmental issues in general (not only animal agriculture related), my suggestion is easily fixable. Please exchange reusable containers for the plastic water bottles that are sitting on the desks. Although some uses of plastic are difficult to change--which does not mean the changes should not be implemented--this use of plastic bottled water is simple to remedy.

I’m glad the book offers solutions AND I don’t necessarily think that vegans should be expected to offer or have solutions. I don’t have the solution to how to end racism but I’m still going to call it out, say it’s wrong and criticize the systems that uphold it. If we have ideas or we know of solutions or alternatives to animal agriculture, great! But if we don’t, that should not be a reason to not speak up against it.

Omg, yes Ed, the US is weird. I live in California and the other day I got “plants are actually more motivated toward survival than animals, so that must mean they feel pain” - a statement from the woman cutting my hair. I asked her questions about this and her thoughts and responses were completely jumbled, and it was clear she had found an illogical way to soothe herself in order to keep eating meat. I prefer an honest argument, but there are few who are able to cope with the results of their choices when it comes to meat eating.

Huh. That's an interesting point Ed makes about the organisations like unions which farmers pay to represent them. (Almost exactly halfway through). Gives me the amazing idea that there could be unions representing the interests of veganic farmers and those transitioning. This will have to exist on order to sway the government to subsidise the vital mass transition and to support the particular interests of veganic farmers experiencing hardship.

All I know is only meat is an elimination diet . There are probably many elimination diets as a vegan as well but i don't check them out so no idea if they work well. Most probably have their gut microbiome damaged and plants have fiber and certain "anti-nutrients" which can both be harmful and beneficial depending on individual and diet ,can get a bit complicated if you don't know anything and start eating like spinach only daily or eating raw improperly cooked beans. Plants aren't trying to really kill us if you are a healthy person which most were and many still around the world are or atleast surviving on it where meat is eaten rarely or like India where ~38% are vegetarians. Rest there are studies and animal exploitation as we know. I do wonder how many are actually sticking to well balanced plant based diet and taking help of a health specialist and eliminating junk food. Junk food has done really bad stuff to our guts !

@@GordonPavilionbut the diet is helping them no matter what anyone else says. I just hope after they heal they try to shift to plant based diets again . Such a weird example to use but it reminds me of in the movie Tommy boy when he’s selling brake pads and he’s talking to one of the guys that he’s trying to sell them to and the guy says to him well then why put a label on the box he’s like Tommy says to make the Consumer feel better. He’s like I could shit in the box and put a nice label on it and it’ll still get bought because it’s just there to make the consumer feel better much like these red tractor labels.

I think this is the first time that I've heard Ed appear to endorse lab grown meat (29mins). I was surprised that it didn't get a mention in his book and wondered whether this was because he wasn't comfortable with the concept of meat and dairy produced by precision fermentation. It strikes me as ironic that when the animal agriculture industry ultimately dies, it won't be down to a mass awakening about veganism or environmentalism, but cold hard economics.

Just love this discussion. I am a wfpb person. Am I vegan. Not sure any animal is. I live in the country and kinda study life from a survival perspective. When a horse is grazing in the field does it look and try to avoid eating the insects on every leaf. I don’t think so. When an elephant is eating the leaves on a tree does it worry about the insects on that leaf. I don’t think so. When the ants farm the advids on a plant for their milk is that cruel. I don’t know. It’s a very complex system our world. How many ants do we kill just by walking. We are made up of trillions of creatures and we need to feed them with nutritious food. I don’t think we need to eat other animals especially other mammals. True carnivores eat their kills raw and right away. Do they care about how much suffering they cause their kill. I don’t think so. Even a one cell creature has feelings. It’s a tough world out there. I think that the health of humans doesn’t require us eating other mammals but are we truly vegans. I don’t know
