My father used to work at a slaughterhouse over 10 years ago. He told me that when the meat was going bad/turning brown, they used red food grade paint to paint the meat red to still be able to sell it to the local markets... they have no concern for humans or the animals. My father is very regretful and suffers from depression and anxiety as a result. I couldn't help but shed a few tears listening to this. Wish the ex farmer great mental health. Hope he can recover from the things he seen and experienced. I'm happy he changed his life, he sounds like he'll never go back. Thanks for sharing this.

Ed, I grew up on a farm, My dad raised chickens for there eggs and I raised sheep, chickens and Turkeys for their meat. They were not pets, they were a commodity, our source of income, and for the most part, they were kept well. Yes we "docked" the tails of the sheep and"castrated" the male lambs , both with bands. It was considered hygienic compared to the knives used on huge farm operations. I was young and 4-H and Future Farmers of America were not evil associations I I named my sheep, just as I named our farm cats, but although I never killed any animals I recognized they had personalities Still I knew where they were headed . We quit farming in 1959 and the only thing I grew after that was Flowers and plants for food. I didn't completely stop eating meat,dairy and fish until about 4 years ago I do not believe that having animals or dairy products or fishing will ever entirely end any time soon, but now knowing the massive detrimental effect of the meat industry and at heart always knowing that other animals were deserving of life, I shall never be anything but Vegan. @albert fish milk has pus in it. That is a fact. I didnt even listen to the podcast but thats literally what they tell you when you work at a cheese factory. The government likes to call it somatic cell count and it varies how much pus is legal from country to country. Its a result from milking with machines. It gives them blisters and bacteria gives them infections. Their utters get pus and blood-filled. And no, the UK is one of the worst for high standards. Pigs on most farms are knee deep in their own waste. Free range chickens are forcefully fattened to where they can break their legs and cant get to a food source and they die. Or they get heart attacks from being gmo or given steroids so they can be at a slaughterweight when they are still babies. And Ed has been to UK dairy farms and its just as bad as the states.Think of it like this, if its legal to cause even a tiny bit of pain by standard practice, it is NEVER ok. The truth is a lot worse and people still defend it tooth and nail. Society is fucked up for even thinking that is ok. That does not account for the abuses workers inflict onto them. Its just standard industry practice.

@albert fish pasturization isnt an extranction process. Its just to kill parasites and kill fecal bacteria. So sanatzied pus really. There 100% is pus and thats not just a fact vegans use to put people of milk! I learned that in agriculture class and my friend who works in a cheese factory told me that there is more pus in cheese than a glass of milk. I'm from WI which is the dairy state of the US. Everyone has a family-owned dairy farm from my town and they have to give them antibiotics for their infections even though they are suppliers of a anti-biotic free company.

My dad use to be a dairy farmer and my mom told me an incident that had happened when she had gone to visit him. (They both eat meat and my lifestyle of growing up on a farm and raising our own meat is what turned me vegan over 3 years ago). Every evening he would ride a four-wheeler around the pastures to check fences and cattle. My mom rode with him once and she saw a cow laying down, groaning and groveling in the distance next to the herd. He told her that the head farmer told him that the cow was very sick, dying and my dad had to drag it out far away from the herd to die.. he had tied it's legs up with rope and hooked her to the back of the four-wheeler and dragged her for close to a mile out. The herd followed and stayed by her side through all the torment and sickness and pain. By the time my mom had seen the cow, it had been a days since he had dragged her out there. Still alive, still in pain and suffering, she was mortified that my dad didn't at least shoot her and put her out of her misery. His excuse was that the shotgun would scare the herd and they would stampede... My childhood was filled with old school country traditions. My dad and grandpa hunted deer, wild rabbits, boar, raccoons; kept beagles and walkers(hunting dogs) in crammed pens and short leads( they were shot if they didn't 'run right' or were too old to breed or hunt in a pack with the others or just happened to get on their nerves one day, if they had too many dogs they would shoot the least favorite and throw them in the woods behind our house; had hogs(fattened up, crammed pens, hung up alive and had their throat slit, drained and their flesh 'dressed'.) The males were castorated young by simply cutting out their testicles as someone would hold them and another cut. Raised a couple cows and goats and they were butchered the same. My grandpa 'loved' rabbits. Bred and sold them. Kill them in mass by hitting them once in the head with a pipe and piling their half-alive bodies on top of one another in a drum. Chickens/turkeys/quails/ginnys and any other foul they wanted to breed or hatch in incubators were killed by either wringing the neck or chopping their heads off and piled high in drums as well. I grew up close with my family, but if it wasn't for my mother preaching that it was the most vile way of treating animals she had ever seen and that she felt remorse for all of the animals that were butchered, I would not have gone vegan. I'm an oddity in my family. They call me their 'rabbit' but still respect me and my decisions to serve me vegan meats and vegetables every Sunday dinner. They are true Baptist Southerners and I am very proud that I have them as my family. If it wasn't without them and their true hypocritical deep compassion towards humans and extreme lack-there of towards animals, I would still be helping with the slaughters. They have no cell phones, no computers and no access to the real truth on health and humanity besides the Bible. I will always love them and disagree with their beliefs. Family is the hardest to change, but I will not stop spreading awareness to others. Thank you Ed for all you do my friend. I'm sorry about the details, but just wanted to share a little of my story here since we were on the topic of farming secrets and I had remembered the incident my mom had told me. Good day all.

One of my coworkers got up behind one of the mothers and she kicked at him which pissed him off. He grabed one of the canes and started beating her. Aiming to inflict the most possible damage to her face jabbing the cane into her eyes. As I stood by doing nothing, saying nothing she was beat until she was blind in one eye. Which became infected and fell out before she was sent to the slaughter house....... iamme - [ ] So unfortunately honey is harmful both to the bees exploited for their honey and wild bees! Standard practices in commercial beekeeping for honey include killing off entire hives before winter to reduce costs, artificial insemination, a process where which male bees are crushed and drained of their semen, which is then forcefully inserted into a queen bee, ripping the wings of queen bees to prevent them from flying away and taking all ( barnsleybeekeepers.org.uk/beekeeping_year.html )or most of the honey bees produce, and replacing it with a sugar syrup substitute. Its also important to recognize that bees are very sentient creatures, who experience pain and are much more intelligent than thought with emotional capacity and thought, they also have extremely sophisticated social systems! There are also environmental issues when it comes to the commercial production of honey with commercial honeybees threatening wild bees and other insects vital to our environment ( www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/02/140219133335.htm ) as the species of bee used for honey production (Apis mellifera) are not even close to being endangered and the honey industry only helps increase numbers of these domestic honey bees, not wild bee populations. This is a big problem since these domestic bees they exploit for honey are actually extremely threatening to wild bees populations, wild bees that are better pollinators and are crucial to the environment. ( www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/02/140219133335.htm )Honey making is also an incredibly exhaustive process for bees and taking ANY of their honey is harmful to bees (both those being exploited and wild bees whose populations are being damaged as a result) in fact the substitute given to replace the honey taken from hives may contribute to the development of disease in honeybees because it does not provide the proper nutrition and may produce a toxin under heat that kills the honeybees. ( www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/08/090826110118.htm )Honey bees make exactly enough honey for themselves, and when they make extra it is as storage food for winter periods where bees cannot otherwise find food easily.

I'm a vet tech and in school we learned that the elastic band method of castration and tail docking is extremely painful. Although no method is good without pain relief.
@MrBilld753 жыл бұрын
Nonsense, lol. Nobody but amateurs (like Vet techs.) use the stupid elastic band method. That's literally not a thing among experienced Farmers. It's more pain and suffering for many days than just cutting/biting them off. Cut/bite them off they are good to go in minutes and act like nothing happened. Go watch the episode about it, that Dirty Jobs did he just bit them off, lol. Go actually learn some real farming, instead of your book theory, lol.

Many farmers pet their animals, name them, talk to them, make sure they are reasonably comfortable and are sad when the animals are taken to slaughter. I think that is what they mean when they say they care. They probably rationalizing that "this is what has to be done". But at the end of the day they are making money off of dominating and taking the life from the most innocent and vulnerable beings on earth. Pure exploitation. Sure, glad many farmers treat their animals with some degree of love and respect, the alternative is worse. But they are still violently exploiting them. Early and horrific deaths for profit.
@nicebars2 жыл бұрын
This is what true evil is.. going against nature, using exploitation for fake, illusory "paper" that we give value to.. These industries will crumble over time. Hopefully most of us live long enough to witness it. In the future, I know most people will be vegetarians or vegans, and that lab grown meat will become dominant in the meat sector. The public's mindset will shift in this sector.

These stories are typical. As a young kid my best friend lived on a dairy farm. They had a dog which had puppies which were not wanted. So into a black bin bag they went, and my friend was told by his dad to get rid of them. So bashed against a wall they were and then buried half alive in the garden. This is what farmers think of animals. I bore witness to the reality that they hide.

The terminology is fascinating. I grew up around farmers and hunters, so it doesn't surprise me to hear him still use "it" to identify the individuals. It took me a while, with lots of practice, to use identification that isn't "other" , and acknowledge the cow, her baby, and the individual. I am quite disgusted by the milk testing, but in all honesty, it doesn't surprise me. Thank you, and the ex-harmer's information. It was quite informative.

Excellent podcast, Ed! Straight from the horse's mouth (as it were) :) Deeply unpleasant industries, inherently cruel, and all for the sake of a few bucks. Let's get these farmer's (who are also victims of the monetary system), to try and transition to farming crops, or organic produce. I know the Vegan Society helps with that already. If this brave man can come out of this cruel trade, no reason why others can't join him? PS I always look forward to your podcast! Peace x
