What makes me laugh is that a lot of martial artists that are iaido practitioners ( who classes themselves as sword fighters ) would make fun of Antony Cummins videos about sword techniques they would say that wouldn’t work in a real fight with swords but when Antony challenges iaido or swordsmanship practitioners to test what would work they all bottle it and go quite lol 😂

Thanks for the video response Antony, and hello again community 🙏 thanks for the invite into the Chinese text chat, it has been interesting to hear different people’s opinions. I feel there was a very big misunderstanding. In your initial email to me, you explained that you feel people don’t really know how qualified your translators really are and, as a result, wanted to make a video clarifying this. I was in full support of this, as documented by our written conversation, and said I would greatly appreciate hearing this. You did NOT, however, say that a line had been crossed and that you were going to state this in your video. I am happy to give benefit of the doubt here, of course, just find it a bit odd that you would call statement about your translating team crossing the line when it was actually based on what you yourself stated in one of your videos (these guys are on my team, they are koryu practitioners [end]). I do not work, for example, from William Scott Wilson because he is William Scott Wilson. I work from his text because he is qualified in Japanese classical literature. Whoever the person is, I personally don’t care what country they come from (and nor should it matter). Rather, I focus more on what background the person has, what have they studied, for how long, what are their qualifications? Etc. My original statement was that if your translators hold a qualification in Classical Japanese literature and/or Classical Japanese translation (with an English translation focus) I would definitely love to use what they say to improve my own understanding. I think this is a crucial area where we differ. I strongly disagree that the work of an amateur and the work of a professor (in the area in which they specialise) are the same thing. An amateur can work very hard on a topic or a swathe of topics, and they should be commended for the effort they spent. However, to say, then, that their work is therefore the same as that performed by a qualified professor or professional in that area is a significant misunderstanding of what qualifications mean. Someone can be a very passionate health enthusiast, which is great. However, I would not take their word as seriously as I would a qualified and experienced doctor or health professional. If a work does not have any translations as yet in English, I would prefer to seek out an experienced, recommended, and qualified translator of that language into English first and foremost before I make any serious conclusions. Then, if possible, I would get it cross checked by another of the same background. I have a masters degree myself, specifically in Teaching Humanities (History and Geography) and English in Secondary Education, but I would not trust myself to be able to come to any firm conclusion about anything in Classical Japanese even if I had a modern native speaker of the language with me. I am a native English speaker, though my work in translating Middle English should not be trusted as much as the work of an actual qualified expert on the topic. You may disagree with this, as is your right, but based on my own background and understanding I am not changing my opinion on this matter. I have the utmost respect for people who take the time to study something long and hard even if they are not qualified in that area. I think they should have the right to speak about their opinions and why they think them, publish books etc. Yoshie Minami has clearly done a lot of work and it is awesome to hear she has a qualification in translation even if it is not in Classical Japanese (which is quite different in various ways to its modern variant). I detest censorship of things that do not come from the academic ivory tower and think that all should be looked at when it comes to studying a specific topic. I am all for using both the words of passionate hobbyists and qualified academics. However, putting the work of a passionate amateur in reading Japanese classical texts on the same level as the work of a highly qualified individual in studying Japanese classical texts to me is nonsensical. I want to make it clear I do not choose to not use your works out of spite, completely far from it. I simply prefer to use, first and foremost if possible, works from qualified people in that specific field and combine them to look at differences/similarities/inconsistencies etc. Even so, I don’t go out and say my opinion is therefore fact. I simply state what I think and why I think it. Hope this all makes sense. Again, no disrespect whatsoever, just explaining why I do what I do. Still wish you all the best in your work, as well as your team 🙏

I think O'Nate the Aussie is allowing his ego to blind him from the truth. It's a common thing today in this delusional world we live in. Btw, a bit of trivia, albeit irrelevant to this video. I didn't know Steven Hayes was in "SHOGUN". Um talking about the old original one back in the day. I studied Anthropology at UC Berkeley; Berkeley Calif and I remember a professor saying in one lecture that; "language is not the sole piece of evidence that legitimatizes cultural research about a culture outside of your own. Because societies do not merely operate solely in language". In other words, there is more to understanding a people or culture then just knowing their language. I wrote an article once for "Ancient American Magazine" once on the astro-theology of the Quiche Maya. Doesn't mean I have to speak fluent Quiche Maya to get my point across. It helps, but it's not a absolute requirement in order to reach a conclusion.
