Debbie Harry was always so much more than her looks. She is just a really complete, thoughtful, intelligent person. It took her a long time to make it, but she did, along with the rest of her band, of course. And she was very devoted to Chris. This is the reason why Blondie had to break up for a long time, because of his major health issues. She still found work where she could, in order to help support themselves over and above the residuals.

What was it about TV interviewers/journalists being so (damn) condescending in the 1970s and 1980s w/ punk, rock, and new wave artists (esp. female ones)?! Deborah Harry and Siouxsie Sioux seemed to get it the most, and right after them, Cyndi Lauper. There seemed to be a definite bias against artists who were breaking new ground, expressing themselves artistically, psychologically, emotionally, and sexually. "The establishment" seemed to think that: 1. This "thing" (be it punk rock, new wave, alternative, experimental music and art, etc.) was just a "trend", a "fad", an aberration, and something to be dismissed as such, w/out accounting for any of its elements, traits, and strengths...2. Because it was ground-breaking, iconoclast, and alternative, it was dangerous to give/allow it any value status in comparison to all of what came before it...3. These "women", especially, were not to be trusted, acknowledged, elevated, and most definitely NOT respected; for they were living examples of life-styles that many women and little girls were not encouraged to explore (by both men and women) in many ways...also, all of these Rock Queens were in long-term relationships w/ equally artistic, liberated men (Chris Stein for Debbie, Steven Severin and, a little later, Budgie for Siouxsie, and Cyndi's Husband), so, it proved the assumed, conservative rubric wrong, and that was ABSOLUTELY a no-go! If you wanted to see the definition of "dismissive", look at the interviews those 3 ladies alone experienced in their nascent, and, sometimes, even established/seasoned eras respectively. Of course, the absolute irony is that by the 21st Century, all 3 of these ladies, and so many others like them, are now treated like the Queens they rightfully are. I wonder how Sue Lawley would interview Debbie in 2017, w/ well over 40 Million albums sold, and yet another brand new Blondie LP about to be released -- with still golden hair to boot?! The best revenge is success, integrity, longevity, and survival...beats any verbal statement you could make...actions speak louder...

0:50 ... sorry mate but Australia was the first country to discover Blondie (outside NY of course). Molly Meldrum accidentally played a 'b-side' to X-Offender, and 'In the Flesh' became a hit here. UK only came in at 'Plastic Letters' if we're being honest!
@xXxBladeStormxXx10 жыл бұрын
Why do Australians think they are the first to discover all good bands? Of course Australians discovered Blondie, Abba, Kiss and on and on. Get a grip...you discovered squat.
@slh95010 жыл бұрын
I don't know about Abba (Eurovision) or Kiss (?) but against either instructions or because the word 'sex' was in X-Offender wasn't acceptable back then, it was decided to play 'In The Flesh' instead. Debbie Harry was so captivating the song charted here, before they charted anywhere else. Not trying to claim anything, this is just fact.
@adambusselmann686010 жыл бұрын
slh950 Yeah Australia discovered ABBA first. ABBA got a number 1 with Waterloo but disappeared after the debut album. However they got 3 number 1's from the album in Australia (S.0.S, I do, i do, i do, i do, i do, i do and Mamma Mia). It was only after they those songs became popular that England and the rest of the world caught on
@telstar19579 жыл бұрын
adam busselmann Of course you are joking ? After the Eurovision Song Contest, held in Brighton, England, in 1974, of which ABBA won with the song Waterloo - and had amalgamated the initials of the original members especially for the occasion to make the name ABBA .... Waterloo went to No.1 and Waterloo the album of the same name charted at No.28 and also No.6 in the album charts in America - long before anyone in Australia had even heard of the song or of the band ABBA ....
@adambusselmann68609 жыл бұрын

staggering how this type of speaking to a woman (even by a woman) was in my lifetime, not that long ago. I remember a lot of interviews with musicians conducted in this manner - just dripping in judgement. There's a similar one (I think it is with sue lawley like this one) where Phil Oakey of The Human League is grilled over his use of synthesizers over "real" instruments - she says that you couldn't possibly go on stage with such a thing! Phil says - actually yes that's exactly what we do. Its incredible to think of a woman being asked (after just stating she is an artist wanting to express herself in different ways) are you thinking of getting married and having children. I see communication like this between women and just wish that women could be a bit nicer to each other.
@janesmith76762 жыл бұрын
"Its incredible to think of a woman being asked (after just stating she is an artist wanting to express herself in different ways)are you thinking of getting married and having children." What is so incredible?? It's a normal, harmless question that you can just answer yes or no too. It isn't like she was told "you oughta get married already!" (Which indeed would be rude.) This kind of PC nonsense that it is a 'sexist' question to ask a woman, as if it's not something both men and women regularly experience the pressure to do, is why so many people are weary of feminism. (And as if women, including feminists have never shamed 'forever bachelor' male lifestyles.) People don't have get married, but there's nothing bad about being asked about it.
