hi rich with your aluminum turbo elbow "fiasco" did you use an old grinding wheel to prep the surface? if so you just contaminated the surface with carbon I cant remember the name of them but there is grinding wheels made just for that job also do your self a favor and buy a good stainless wire brush that is used strictly for aluminum it will make everything go alot better and you need pure or 2 percent ceriated tungsten when welding aluminum cheers Tyler

Best tip i ever got for aluimium welding is make sure everything is super clean. Makes a huge difference, that's what the black areas on the weld mean are it's a bit dirty, weld will be good non the less.

Deboss is moving forward... A few firsts today. I say it is awsome. Good thing about moving the master/Hydra boost under the frame is you can create your own linkage for somthing period correct. I'm thinking how to do it now. It's contagious.

I don't know if it would be suitable, but look at a hydro boost out of an Astro Van. Much more compact. Used one on an early Bronco one time, worked perfect.

Sometimes an hour, hour and a half in a well stocked wrecking yard, say once a month, just wandering around an looking at "stuff" is worthwhile (and its usually pretty quiet). Not that you don't know and with nothing in particular in mind for this build BUT it just strikes me that somewhere there must be something much closer to functional for what you need than what you were given in this case. Unless of course I have completely misread and these were parts the customer specifically wanted to be included.

If you are doing a remote boost unit for the brakes, could you not fab up a vacuum boost unit under the truck frame like the medium duty trucks. chevy c70 or something. Simple master cylinder to the firewall to a vacuum boost unit under the truck somewhere.
@fascistpedant7585 жыл бұрын
This thing is pretty cool. Lots of funky fabrication. Its great if you enjoy the challenge and find the time and patience to do it right. There were more levers on that machine, a second one for the handbrake would be cool and not that much more trouble. I'm swapping an old G Wagon to diesel. Have you ever used a plastic gasoline tank for diesel fuel without long term problems? Thanks for sharing the fun. I hope it's worth the trouble for you. (Did you fire the glow plugs before starting it?)

# 1 Rule when working on a customers project " anything can be made to fit as long as it's a open checkbook " other wise you can't afford it and don't ask me to make it fit .When welding aluminum the biggest trick is to use separate tools for grinding , cutting, cleaning never use a tool that touched anything but aluminum , clean hands and filler rod. Cross contamination make welds crappy looking and weaker. Old parts should be cleaned and pre heated to help release old oils. The cleaner the easier to weld .

3.73 gears are too high. Had to take the 3.73's out of mine and put in 4.10's cause the truck was going nearly 120 mph at optimum engine rpm of 1900 to 2000. It hit 150 before I took my foot out of it and had plenty left.
