This is like everything wrong with online film critique. “Fictional characters must be perfect 24/7 and always make perfectly calm and rational decisions all the time”
@Ninja07Keaton
@Ninja07Keaton Жыл бұрын
They also complain about the lack of realism, then condemn characters for not being logical 24/7. The irony is that no human alive is even remotely capable of being logical at all times. So the one area of realism that exists in storytelling is the thing they hate the most. This is why I struggle to take followers of rationalism seriously. Their logic is too rooted in survival instincts to be considered unbiased.

Most of SK's arguments can be disproven with a single fact: Peter's been Spider-Man for three months and has dealt with low crime only. Not supervillains, nor organized crime. Just petty crooks and saving people. And most of the problems he deals with goes back it, because it's his first time dealing with them. How would a fifteen years old kid know he could ask to be anonymous when working with a newspaper for the _first time in his life._ It's one of the things that makes this Peter Parker so great to me: he's the most relatable take on the character thus far for any teen/young adult. He treats him like a veteran Spider-Man who should have all the answers and experience, that shouldn't under any circumstance fuck up, when he naturally wouldn't have such. Not to mention that it's still a Saturday morning cartoon. Yet, he seems to be asking it to be like Batman V Superman levels of "depth" and "introspection" (more accurately pretentiousness).

Hell, the showrunners referred to the premise of the show as "The education of Peter Parker" and for a very good reason. The entire point of the series is Peter growing up to become a better hero and person as a whole. Too bad we never saw that fully-realized Spider-Man.

Exactly. S.K has so many criticisms with Spectacular Spider-Man saying things like “Why didn’t Peter do this a certain way” or “Why didn’t Peter just do this instead so he wouldn’t have to worry about this”. He seemingly forgets that’d not only is this a first year Spider-Man, but he’s also a human being that makes mistakes, and for him to achieve something successfully in a perfect way every time, would just be bad writing.

I'm tired of channels calling everything a 'disaster' when they criticize something. Like, this series got a second season (far from a given in the world of TV), was critically successful and created a cult fanbase. We're still talking about it, over a decade and a half later. It wasn't a massive hit or anything, and it did get cancelled, but none of that strikes me as particularly disastrous. People just cheapen the word by overusing it. Soon enough disaster will just mean 'bad', and then it'll mean nothing at all. Anyway, ignore the rant. I really liked the video.

One thing you didn't mention about Curt becoming Lizard is what I think both of you have actually missed. In the Electro episode, it's explicitly highlighted how Electro shoots Curt's container which has the lizard dna and in the Lizard episode, when he injects it, it's shown to sparkle electricity. So perhaps Curt DIDN'T MAKE A MISTAKE and he was genuinely onto something with his research, but due to Electro's powers messing up the formula, he transformed into a giant monster and due to that trauma, Curt never wanted to experiment with that ever again. I always found that to be one of the most subtly brilliant parts about that episode so just wanted to mention it.

SK feels like a type of person I've met a lot before. That person that when sees something slightly wrong done by someone, gets overly mad about it, calling it out for it being stupid or dumb, often to something that isn't even wrongful or that bad in the first place, while also not being a very intelligent person themselves. Then oftens suggest "better solutions" for what they're overly critizing, which turn out to always just be way worse than what they're trying to "fix", and just end up overly complicating or fumbling what didn't even needed fixing in the first place.

In every video I've seen in regards to S.K., he's so hyper fixated on realism and things happening in a realistic way… in a franchise that's about a superhero, who's powers are that of being a spider, while he fights villain's that go by Doctor Octopus, Sandman, Green Goblin, Rhino, Electro, The Vulture, and as of recently thanks to Spider-Verse, The Spot. Not only does he fight those guys all of the time, but he does so in a bright red and blue costume, and because of his powers, he calls himself Spider-Man. Not only does he expect things to be realistic, which it already isn't because a story about a kid who calls himself Spider-Man, but then he expects these characters to always act 100% rational and logical. Forgetting that human's in real life don't always think logically or rationally. That's why Vulture is great in this show, because we're watching an old man who's gone insane and is using his invention to cause harm. Realistically, no insane person is gonna think rationally or logically. So seeing how far he's willing to go for his vengeance is entertaining because we know that eventually, Spider-Man is gonna come and save the day.

And someone like Spidey would've absolutely known that, which is why he wasn't too concerned with it. And clearly Spidey did have a plan what to do once Vulture's flight tech failed. Peter setting up his camera isnt even character assassination. He does it all the damn time in the original comics lol. Does SK know what character assassination actually is? Peters actions in the first episode would have only been character assassination if either he failed, or it was portrayed he was being reckless. The writers control the outcome. He wasn’t going to kill anyone. He didn’t threaten to kill anyone. He had total control of the situation. Vulture was in no danger of dying. And I’m sure if the writers wanted to make a set piece for Peter to catch a helicopter they could. He does later in the series so he’s more than capable. What sheer nonsense.
@MetalHopper
@MetalHopper Жыл бұрын
His point still stands though, if the helicopter didn't land perfectly on the top of a bulding he would have to choose between letting Vulture fall to his death or letting the helicopter crash on a *highly populated city*
@jameskingman1227

@@MetalHopper nah, you think Peter couldn’t easily web Vulture to a wall before going to catch the helicopter. He effortlessly saved Vulture in that moment, and we’ve seen him multitask in the series plenty of times. There is a possibility things could go wrong, but that wasn’t the intention of the scene and it isn’t what happened. Montana safely landed the helicopter without incident. Peters biggest goof in that whole moment was letting the Enforcers get away, but frankly that is such a Spider-Man thing to happen. He can’t solve everything.

It doesn't matter if he failed or was being portrayed as reckless because he still risked potentially a shit ton of lives, and it doesn't matter what the writers intended because the implications are still there. When Liz mentions that Peter is always disappearing and mentions these occasions on the drive to the prom. This allows the Vulture to figure out Peter’s identity. A lot of the arguments come down to the action, which is usually small things that most people look over. What matters is the characterization. If I saw a super hero movie that was nonstop 2hrs of suspenseful, top notch action sequences, I would give it a Meh score, because I wouldn’t care enough about the people involved to really care. It’s the characters that give these scenes substance. If the substance is handled really well, then the small errors are easy to glance over.

Bro I can destroy SK arguments so easily 1. Peter sets up the photo because at many points throughout the show Peter has shown that he’s trying to win thsi contest might I add contest implying if he doesn’t someone else will and Aunt May can’t afford to lose another possible revenue chain so ofc he’s going to take every chance to win 2. Peter in that moment is being cocky because he believes his plan will work flawlessly he believes he can simply knock the lizard into the drink and feed him the serum. He told Eddie prior to this plan to leave at which point he refused so Peter simply allowed him to do his plan because there was no other way to lure the lizard from his point of advantage in the reptile section to the only point in the zoo where he’s literally weaker and slower 3. The fact Peters name is in the picture could simply be a result of Peter not knowing Jameson would put it in it’s completely within Jamison’s character to leave it out especially when he doesn’t think any wrong doing could come from it. 4. What SK can’t fully comprehend and why the final scene is so good is literally Uncle Ben is dead because of Peter and his powers if he never got bit the bills would be paid but because of a random bug bite Peter now has to make money and be Spider-Man and the best way in this situation for him to do that while saving the day is to take the picture of him saving people. From a moral standpoint there’s nothing wrong especially when he believes and is capable of saving Eddie which he did before any harm could come saving Billy and curing Connor’s which might I add he literally created the very idea for the antidote as Peter Parker as well. He did nothing wrong from his point of view so it’s in character for Peter to try and cash in and get some reward for his powers and this is why it’s a big Spider-Man moment. He’s trying to “do both” and it blows up in his face because for him to get that picture and save the day are diametrically opposed outcomes. Either he saves Connor’s and Peter doesn’t get the photo or he gets the photo and Peter risks allowing his friends to get hurt or die. He did both and it still didn’t work which is Perfectly Spider-Man. SK doesn’t engage with Spider-Man media or any Media from a standpoint of character motives or human beliefs all he does is think what he would do to solve a problem with his benefit of hindsight and then judge characters in that situation

Which in turns makes him miss the contest for his team. Which then makes everyone mad at him and then since him and Ned had a whole alien bomb in Ned’s bag it exploded in dc which then puts his friends in danger having spider man to rush from the vault to dc to save his friends. And for far from home well the consequences he gets by trying to stop Mysterio is that mysterio outted his secret identity. Which then in no way home he goes to doctor strange for a spell and obviously if u watch the movie it fails which brings villains from other universes which then Mcu Spider-Man has to stop and not only stop them he tries to cure them. Which his consequences in doing that is aunt may being killed by the green goblin and on top of that having Doctor strange make another spell that makes everyone forget who he is and now literally his whole life as Peter has been taken from him and now he is only left with the spider man identity. People were ripped sure but they looked like real people. And Peter wasn't dealing with kid things. I give spectacular credit though that the writing is probably better and the updated animation in general is better. Just not my style. For same reason. The Crescent Moon Spade's versatility allows its master to hook, stab, scoop, sweep, smack and chop at opponents using techniques from spear, staff, broadsword, and trident fighting styles. The crescent blade was added to the opposite end to push away animal predators by the neck without killing them. Fancy Dan doesn’t have that. He only has the side meant for killing which fallows the “squashing” part of their deal.

Making rational decisions 24/7 is not humanly possible. Peter finding a good spot to put his camera over saving Eddie from the Lizard is not character assassination. It is character development. The most relatable thing for humans is making mistakes. He’s talking about realism but realism is imperfect. Stan Lee’s mission was to create characters that he enjoys. Instead of Superman defeating every challenge that comes his way, Stan wanted to make characters that were relatable to him and his reader. Characters that make mistakes and have problems. Spider-Man is the embodiment of that. I think that criticizing Spider-Man for being imperfect is just a sign that he doesn’t understand that character. He wants everyone to be Rey Palpatine.

I like your video and agree with most of your points in it other than the MCU Spiderman faces no consequences. I know its a small part of this 40 minute video but i see it brought up so often i kinda wanna mention it lol. Like for Homecoming he's facing them throughout the movie every time he ditches his social life for spiderman stuff he loses social captial so much to the point where in the end Liz doesn't take him seriously. Other than that his grades and his relationships with his aunt and Tony are damaged as a result of him chasing avengers status over his own life, and because of that Vulture is able to find out who he is in which i think is a great scene guess my point is the MCU spiderman does have consequences they're just scaled down compared his other movie counterparts where New York/The World is a stake i think its a fine take on Spiderman where hes in a world where theres already heroes and he has to figure out who he is as where most of the time hes like the only hero in the world
