He opted to run that as his front page instead of more Spider-Man stuff and when Peter sold the pictures to the Globe (rival paper) their issue overshadowed his son's story and that upset him. He also seemed to have underlying resentment of Peter already, which just got worse as Peter's Spider-Man activities ramped up and caused issues in his life. He tells Peter, "our parents may have died together, but you had your precious aunt and uncle. We had no one. We've always been alone", which is something he probably always envied Peter for, but never said to anyone because of how awful that sounds. He even mentions something like to MJ when he's driving recklessly through New York, saying that Eddie kept the bullies off Peter's back, with Peter profiting off the Lizard incident in return by taking photos instead of helping. Yes, this was before he knew Peter was Spider-Man, but you can understand the sentiment. Another thing to keep in mind is that Eddie's a college student that lost is his job at the Connor's Lab due to the symbiote being stolen, which meant that he likely couldn't continue paying his tuition either. Peter did ultimately steal the symbiote, and try to destroy it despite Eddie telling him it could've gotten him his job back. Even if Peter could've explained it to him, I doubt it would've worked considering how angry and somewhat mentally unstable Eddie already was. I don't think the symbiote told Eddie literally everything, and with how Eddie was feeling at the time, I don't think he was thinking rationally. Since the symbiote was the only love in Eddie's life at that point, he likely didn't want to give it up either way, both due to the alien's influence, and because of Eddie's own mental problems.

Greg Weisman actually said recently that there were never plans to kill Gwen in the show itself. He knows that goes against the mythology. He went on to say that IF they decided that Gwen was going to die, it wouldn’t have happened until the movies set after the end of the show, where Peter and the Gang are in college, because they would be more mature then, and the writers could give the death the gravitas and weight it deserves. Also, Venom would have redeemed himself and possibly gotten his own spin off series. The Hobgoblin would have been the main villain of season 3, and Norman’s plot line wouldn’t have been revisited until season 4. Such a shame that this show can’t be resurrected like young justice. But who knows, maybe Freshman year will carry on the same spirit.
@GamerSlyRatchet12 жыл бұрын
I completely respect that approach. He and Victor Cook actually respected Gwen and wanted her to be a proper character, rather than a checkmark to fulfill (Amazing Spider-Man 2). Why is that an issue. Peter Parker is a flawed character it’s at his core
@furonguy42 Жыл бұрын
@@paulakroy2635 I agree - my issue isn't the characterisation of Peter or that he's flawed. Like I said, its that the interpersonal elements of the Spectacular cartoon are just _so_ compelling and so well-crafted that the actual Spider-Man stuff feels like a frustrating interruption. A lot of Spider-Man adaptations understandably focus on the super hero stuff first and have the civilian life stuff secondary - the Spectacular cartoon flipped it so the focus is largely on Peter and his supporting cast with the hero stuff still prominent, but less so than usual, and I like that in concept, it's just that the writers, animators and voice actors all did _such_ a great job at selling Peter's friendships and relationships that even some of my favorite members of the rogues gallery would have me just impatiently waiting to get back to the stories surrounding Liz, Harry or Eddie. Maybe that's the point, maybe they wanted us to empathise with Eddie's frustrations that Peter was always seemingly disappearing when villains started attacking. But what I was trying to get across in my original comment was not that I have issue with Peter being flawed, it's that the great drama _about_ Peter's flaws is constantly being interrupted for action scenes. Honestly, my fix for this show would be, ironically, to have less Spider-Man in it; instead of showing Spider-Man fighting Kraven or Ock or Electro or whoever, keep the focus on the supporting cast in Peter's absence while these fights go down in the background. I know that sounds silly, but to me, Spectacular Spider-Man was always much more of a Peter Parker show than a Spider-Man show, and if they'd just leaned into that a bit harder, it would've turned what is already an Amazing adaptation into a Sensational adaptation, if you'll pardon the wordplay.
@CaspianMidnight Жыл бұрын
Hobie Brown (the original prowler from the comics) is in this and actually has no lines (he's constantly interrupted in every episode he's in) until the final episode, where he speaks on stage. This show does every character so much justice, it's spectacular.

Something I really love about Spider-Man as a whole is Jameson and Peter's relationship. While Jameson hates Spider-Man with a passion, he often views Peter as a sort of son. And the reason I like that dynamic with Jameson is because it makes for great stories. While Jameson is praising Peter for his skills as a photographer in his own way, he's also slandering his alter-ego. I don't read a lot of comics, but I saw a snippet of one where Peter reveals his identity to Jameson and it causes Jameson to rethink his entire view on Spider-Man. Because that's THE best kind of J.J. Jameson.

In the defense of Eddie, his remarks in Venom's debut episode, that Peter grew up with Aunt May and Uncle Ben while he had no one, and that he resented Peter for it, recontextualized both his previous friendship with Peter and his lashing out at him throughout the season. He seems to have always hated Peter for having the life he lacked, but because they were friends, he kept trying to repress that bitterness by being his "bro". When Peter screws up, it kind of "justifies" Eddie's hatred of Peter and it frees him to spew venom at him. By the time he gets the symbiote, it doesn't matter that Peter is Spider-Man. He's fully addicted to his hatred and refuses to listen to reason. Add to that, the symbiote makes him feel less alone, so he refuses to let go of his hatred and his connection to it.

Gwen, Felicia, Cindy, hell fucking Jennifer Walters at this point are all FAR better partners and even far better *people* than MJ at this point. At least in the 616 anyway. Coming right after rhino he seems like another bruiser, as commented by Peter, but then absolutely wipes the floor with the web head and we learn just the extent of who he is. Having him be the cold, calculating fill in for kingpin as well as his psuedo-teamup with spidey at the end of season 1 was such a great dynamic and made for easily one of the standout villains despite so many standout villains. The voice cast of this series really make the story feel lived in and natural. Everyone is perfect for their respective roles it it sells both the action and the audio drama aspects of the show, I gush about this cast whenever VO conversations show up (as rare as they do lol). I was a Liz over Gwen girl too and same thing, that's no hate on Gwen, Liz is just that cool. Normally I can't stand love triangles but this show, somehow, developed both Liz and Gwen so well I totally understood why Peter was so conflicted. It felt real and I was empathetic to everyone involved. Last thing! I couldn't stand Gwen's "glow up". I was never a fan of the trope and I'm still not 12 years later it feels...trite?

so heartbreaking man. The characters were just all so complex and endearing. A part of me would love to see gwen and peter continue their relationship after peter drops liz, but In my heart I want peter to be with MJ in this universe. MJ was just so good to peter throughout the show, she was patient with him, helped him with his girl problems even though they had some feelings for each other and she knew peter was drooling over 3 different girls at the time, she still gave him guidance and advice. MJ had a grown, mature mentality compared to the other girls and boys in midtown. Gwen was also good to peter, so it hurts to think that eventually, peter will break her heart and get with MJ. It's just so crushing. I just got the vibes from Gwen in this show that she was a bit more "sensitive" (for lack of a better word, maybe 'aware of her feelings' is a better choice) about her feelings, so if she was to ever get heartbroken it would be just soul-crushing for her and I would honestly feel bad. Sorry for the long ass rant, this show had unparalleled writing and spectacularly complex characters, something that's refreshing to see.

Mary Jane Watson is tied with Peter Parker as my favorite character in all of fiction. The movies have never done that character justice (Raimi Mary Jane is not an adaptation of Comic Mary Jane, she’s an adaptation of Comic Betty Brant) and I love that Spectacular actually manages to get her right! I love that she’s not the first love interest in Peter’s high school life. The reason she and Peter work so well together in the comics is because they get together when they are both older and have matured due to their life experiences. Peter himself is the best he’s ever been outside of the comics. No movie has ever gotten close to being as accurate as this show. And it does something that even the comics have forgotten about: Spider-Man is not a miserable burden on Peter Parker, and Peter Parker’s life isn’t misery porn. This is something that the Raimi movies focuses on way too much and is one of the reasons I dislike them as adaptations. The MCU is actually a lot closer to the same tone and style that Spectacular has where it understands that Spider-Man is something Peter sees as a positive thing in his life, more often than Spidey is a negative. Plus, Peter is a lot more like his comic self in Spectacular. He’s cocky, quippy, flirty, and has a temper both in the mask and out of it. The show gets that Spider-Man and Peter Parker aren’t two different people. Will forever be sad that this show was cancelled and I have my fingers crossed that Greg and Victor would revisit the show when they find the time and rights become less of a minefield Now, if you will excuse me, it is time for me to rewatch this show.

@@AraiiarA she is different from what you expect of Mary Jane. Usually she’s not a reporter, but I’m 100% okay with adaptations making changes to fit the story and world the writers are going for. They wanted Mary Jane to have a more active role in the plot and I’m okay with making her a reporter to fit that. It was a very Ultimate comics choice. She still acted the way I expected Mary Jane to act and I really liked her. I understood her frustration with Peter, and she never annoyed me. Except when I had to do her stealth segments. There was really only one stealth segment in the whole game that I liked and that was when she and Peter worked together at the GCS. I still liked her the whole way through.

I finally started binge watching Season 1 a few months ago and definitely understood why it was so highly praised. As someone who followed this show since the beginning, all the Disney buy out of the animated Spidey rights did was prevent Sony from making another series. The REAL villains here are Warner Bros and Paramount for merging into the CW and subsequently selling off their Saturday Morning Cartoon broadcast to 4Kids. Let me start at the beginning. When the show was first pitched NO ONE wanted it for some reason, and there was some talk that they were going to release the show Directly to video, probably why the continuity was so tight. Eventually, Kid's WB picked the series up, and it did quite well. Unfortunately, after the first season, that's when the UPN part of the CW decided Saturday Mornings were no longer profitable, 4Kids took over. While they did retain the rights to rerun the first season, they couldn't afford to run the already produced second season, opting for cheaper programming that they owned the rights to when they were Fox affiliate based. So without an American network, the show was all but cancelled, and a lot of the staff was told to clean out their desks. The second season didn't air for YEARS because it had no place to air, at least here in the US. Bulgaria got the second season before us. BULGARIA! So years later Disney picks it up for Toon Disney, and if you thought that's when we got season 2, you're wrong. It took an ADDITIONAL year, because TD wanted to establish the show, so they reran the first season yet again. By the time we actually got season 2, it was too late. The show could not be salvaged, everyone was laid off from the project, and I don't think Sony had any interest in resuscitating it. I suspect we'd have got something more in tone with the Amazing Spider-Man movies, not something inspired by the Raimi ones. Adding insult to injury, I think the CW's Saturday Morning block ran the first season one final time under Saban's ownership of the channel before they just gave up and gave it to Litton's monopoly of cheap to produce TV E/I boring garbage.
@parkerboy7952 жыл бұрын
But I thought the second season premiered a year after the first ended. Also, I'm confused about the specifics of the Marvel/Sony deal. We were told Sony gave up the TV right for Spider-Man to hold onto the film rights and for some reason, held onto the production rights for Spectacular. However, some point, I read that Sony can make TV series, but the episodes have to be longer than 30 minutes.
@mightyfilm2 жыл бұрын
@@parkerboy795 I assure you, the second season did NOT premiere in the US until years later. Sure, it was ready, we could have seen it if CW held off a year before dumping their kid's programming. We probably could have seen it within a reasonable time frame if either Nick or CN picked it up, but they didn't want it. 4kids couldn't afford to run anything but the episodes they already got, and they were basically the last of the Saturday Morning blocks. So the show had no home. Trust me. I was there. I remember the message boards and I do remember them really being pissed about every other country getting the second season before Disney picked the broadcast rights up. The show was a victim of bad timing. Saturday Morning Broadcast was dying, CN went through the pre-Adventure Time dark period that killed Toonami (perfect place for the show), the poor series probably wouldn't even had a first season had it not been for Kid's WB.

@@parkerboy795 I think that's the context everyone seems to forget when it comes to this series. Mainly because all the new viewers watched the show online or on the collected DVD set. Side note, they didn't even release the FIRST season collected until well after the show ended, let alone the second. They released them in 3 episode, 15 dollar a go volumes. I don't even think the second season got a separate release. I didn't get to see the second season until someone posted them to KZbin quite some time after.

This show and Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes were both so damn good, and it hurts me every time I remember such incredible interpretations got dumpstered because Marvel needed to vomit out more MCU bile instead of just adapting future storylines to play nice with it to some degree.
@bensell9822 жыл бұрын
You know what's even more heartbreaking. The Spider-Man that appeared in Earth's Mightiest Heroes was supposed to be the same Spider-Man as this one. They even recorded the entire first episode with Spider-Man in it with his voice actor from Spectacular Spider-Man, but since Ultimate Spider-Man was airing at the same time they re-recorded it with the voice actor from that show. Really sucks because they replaced Earth's Mightiest Heroes with Avengers Assemble and while that series is good I don't think it compares. For one thing I hate how the characters all use their MCU designs. Especially Antman. Plus in that series Antman is Scott Lang not Hank Pym and neither him or Janet is mentioned in it. Even though both exist because Ultron is a known threat and Hope Pym shows up.

I could've kinda lived with spectacular getting replaced if the follow up was at least decent. @@edfreak9001 basically yes. Even more dumb is Deadpool is in the series himself, but massively toned down to be kid friendly. Okay first off Deadpool should NEVER be kid friendly. Second he's voiced by the same actor who did Ron in Kim Possible and he does the exact same voice for both. Having both a fourth wall breaking Spider-Man and a kid friendly Deadpool means we literally have 2 of the exact same character, but one is more obnoxious.

I recently rewatched this show on netflix after being ecstatic that they added it to their repertuar. I think the main thing I learned about this show after my rewatch of the series is that it is so much more that the average "kid show" (quotes implied because I detest the idea that a piece of creative media needs to be restricted and confined to a demographic). When spectacular spider man initially came out, I had no way of finding or watching the actual show, left to only pick up the scraps of bits and pieces of episodes from reruns or on demand programs. So when I finally was afforded the opportunity to watch the show in it's chronological entirety, I was amazed by the spectacle and utter brilliance of this show. This show has amazing characters accented and elevated by an interesting story, plot, and overall narrative. It has dynamic characters who change, evolve and grow into better or worse people by the end of the series. It simultaneously alters and preserves so many of the classic and beloved spider man trops without alienating a new audience who may not be as well versed as avid decade long comic book fans who have adored and loved this series since its inception. I know personally that this series was the one that got me interested in so much of the spider man universe. The symbiote saga, relatively unknown villains like the vulture, shocker, and kraven, and so much more of the spiderman mythos that was revealed and shown to me by this wonderful show. I think the main reason why this show has truly had such a large and lasting impact on me, is because it was a truly fantastic show. It never felt cheap, campy, or like it was only built to sell toys to unsuspecting kids. It never felt formulaic or repetitive in it's plot or narrative. It always felt like the show writers were completely focused on weaving a fascinating and intriguing narrative that either had you on the edge of your seat and wanting more. And finally, it just felt like it was loved and cared about by the writers and fanbase. I think what a lot of "kid shows" (again quotes implied for reasons above) are missing today is actual real life lessons and gritty reality. I'm not saying that every show meant for a younger audience needs to steep and delve itself so far into reality as the spectacular spider man did, but i'm also not denying that they should look at this show for inspiration. The peter parker we see in this adaptation is a peter that not only has to fight the very real life and physical threats of super villains and crime syndicates, but also the less physical and more abstract ideas of mental trauma, teenage drama, bills, work loads, life balance, and so so so much more. We, as the viewers, are afforded a unique third person perspective on these issues. We get to see every punch given, every kick given, and every single problem peter has to overcome in order to live some semblance of a normal life. Throughout it all, through the homework, the tutoring, the long nights patrolling, the bruises, the blisters, the pain, the suffering, spider man perseveres. Peter loses friends, loved ones, and in the case of the symbiote, he almost loses himself and yet he perseveres throughout it all. This show teaches it's viewers that even in our darkest moments, when our back is to the wall and it feels as if the whole world is about to collapse around you, that you can choose to rise in spite of it, to strive for something more, to choose to stand tall in spite of adversity and setback, to choose to put the betterment of others before your own, to choose to be a hero. After all isn't a hero just a morally righteous person who is willing to help those who need helping, and protect those who can't protect themselves? This show teaches us all that we can all be heroes in our own way, by preaching determination, steadfast resolve, and incorruptible perseverance in the face of adversity. Spectacular spider man is a fantastic story full of great storytelling, dynamic characters, and a well thought out narrative. I guess in the end what i'm trying to say is go watch this show on whatever platform you can, it is the panicle of what not only shows, but creative content should strive to be, and no matter if your an aspiring writer, or someone who is just looking for something fun to watch, we can all take something away from and learn from the fantastic show known as, The Spectacular Spider-Man. Thanks for reading.

To be honest the real tragedy is Spectacular was gonna be canceled whether Disney bought Marvel or not Kids WB was the last cartoon block standing in 2008 and Toonami was cancelled the same year Spectacular came out so it had no network willing to take it considering how bad Cartoon Network treated Fantastic Four World's Greatest Heroes by messing with when the episodes came out to the point Nickelodeon was the one to air the rest of that series that's saying a lot and this was back in 2006 2007 two or one year before Spectacular. And to be honest Marvel's Spider-Man 2017 isn't universally hated as many people believe or want to believe it's more faithful to the source than Ultimate and the fact it's rated 86% on Rotten Tomatoes over Ultimate's 56% kinda says it all.

I think part of why the Norman reveal works so well is that it plays on audiences expectations for his...parental approach. Everyone knows Norman is the Green Goblin from adaptations, but unless you where reading comics at the time, you'd probably think that he's a neglectful or harsh, but ultimately loving father. The initial reveal is also Norman's "Awww, he really does care" moment, which we've come to expect. I've even seen old posts from the show's airing predicting the real reveal pretty closely, and one of the common counteraguments was the idea that they just wouldn't go there. Child abuse wasn't untouched in children's tv at the time but tended to be kept out of focus, very special episode, or dark comedy, but rarely as an integral plot point. Even when it was, and still to this day where it's more common, there tends to be a lense of fantasy or a historical angle to create some distance while still being recognisable. Spectacular does blur the line with the framing and Norman spraining Harry's leg being a supervillain plot and the addiction being to a fictional substance, however it's still couched in the very mundane emotional abuse Norman throws at Harry through the series. It's the part of the series that gets harder to watch as I get older. Children's shows have gotten a lot more direct about discussing abuse in recent years, but this is still the one that gets to me on the level of something like Bojack Horseman or Moral Oral.

Regards to whether the show would have had the guts to kill Gwen, I think it is all her certain that she would have eventually been killed by the green Goblin as the creators were clearly dedicated to adapting as much source material as possible and moment is simply to iconic to Spider-Man's history for them not to adapt it. Now to be clear, I do not think they would have killed Gwen in the show proper rather I think they would have done it in the follow-up moviess. When answering a question about when Gwen would die, the show's creator said he was always surprised by this question as Gwen had always died in Peter's collage years in the comics. That tells me that he was going to adapt the storyline in Peter's collage years which not only is more accurate the the source material but it also makes sense from a censorship perspective. There is only so much you can get away with in a kids tv show and the creator always said the planned movies would have allowed him to tell more intense and mature stories. So here's what I think was the plan: The show ends with the death of George Stacy since he also died in the comics. That would have been the catalyst for Gwen and Peter to get together and the the show proper would have ended with with them in a relationship. And then in on of the collage films Green Goblin would return and kill Gwen. And when that happened, Mary Jane and Peter get back together. I don't know if they would actually get married since they would have to date for sometime but the implication that this is Peter's true love would be there so the show gets happy ending in spite of personal tragedy.
