I’m rebuilding a 1975 shovelhead that’s apparently original pistons. This was very educational as far as what comes first pistons or the bore after determining what the cylinder measurement is at tear down. This is all new information to me. Thank you.

Hey Man, Great video! I wish I had a shop to do this stuff in, or a garage, Im ijn the driveway in the sun, and am doing rings on my zuki x90, How do I check clearance with the crank in after getting new rings and or pistons? I am taking the pistons to the machine shop to let them decide if there to far gone, I have never done this before, but when they quote me $800 just to do a head gasket, Ill try it myself !, Thanks

So cool, your building a engine in Texas.... well sorta. You make it look so easy. It took me a full day to be able to gain skill to get same measurement 2-3 times in a row. I had to make a jig to carefully hold the mic and using a block of wood to be able to position everything in same spot repeatedly. I also have the 2618 pistons. So all pistons with my mic are 82.95 clicking the tension handle. Seems my bores are 83.06-83.08 consistantly measuring each one 20+ times. Is the .11-.13mm to much or inconstant? Could it be caused because I cant click the handle on the mic while measuring the telescope. Your videos are right on time look forward to each one.
@DecimalTenths
@DecimalTenths 4 жыл бұрын
Cheers for watching. The values given with the 2618 JEs suggest 0.004" (0.1mm) minimum PTW. I'd prefer not to be over that from personal experience but a smidge wouldnt be the end of the world. Are they oversize pistons and have you had your block machined? Maybes try and get some solid results and if in the end of it you have to get a different block, then it may be the only option.
@shanekent1580
@shanekent1580 4 жыл бұрын
@@DecimalTenths I gave machine shop pistons and the block. The pistons are 83 and was machined for them I also provided machine shop with piston paper work. I am hoping it's just my telescope skills to mic, are just off but man I did like a thousand times. Thanks for all you do.
@DecimalTenths
@DecimalTenths 4 жыл бұрын
@@shanekent1580 No worries, it is a fiddly process that takes practice to get right. Ideally youd have a bore gauge that was zeroed off your pistons. Taking way more money than what I have invested though. I would keep on measuring mate. You want solid repeatable results before you give up. If you cant get them then it may be your equipment or technique. Transferring from gauges to mics isnt ideal but it can give good results.

Do you have the exact measurements of the pistons you used in combination with the 2.0 crank? In this case the pistons are shorter to fit the longer stroke of the crank right? Your video's inspired me to build a similar engine, such a cool project!
@DecimalTenths
@DecimalTenths 3 жыл бұрын
Generally the pistons aren't shorter, they simply offset the gudgeon pin location further up the piston to allow for the extra travel. I give piston dimensions when I set piston to wall clearance in that video.

Hi sorry to bother got oil burning in my 18t build, Pitons are Wiseco 82.5 stroke pistons had the machine shop set the wall clearance at .1mm box says .89 will this be the oil problem
@DecimalTenths
@DecimalTenths 4 ай бұрын
Do you mean the paperwork suggests 0.089mm and they've used 0.1mm? That's only half a thou in old money so I doubt very highly that this is your issue. If the paperwork is suggesting the above clearance then the pistons must be something like 2618 aluminium alloy and the gap is for thermal expansion. There's lots more to it including the actual build practices and techniques, how round the cylinders are, how the engine was broke in etc...

I have brought some pistons that are 4.030. The manufacture clearance calls for 0.0040. The machine said that he will bore cylinder to 4.031. Does that sound right?
@DecimalTenths
@DecimalTenths 3 жыл бұрын
Different manufacturers have different guidelines for their PTW clearance limits due to thermal expansion of their material. That sounds tight if you are wanting to keep it to 0.004". Maybes talk to him and get his reasoning

heyy , i have a question please , ive read on the bentley of a golf 2 that the diameter can go up to 0.08 from nominal dimension , and the piston to cylinder clearance should be 0.03 and 0.07 maximum allowable , 81.01mm cylinder bore standard , piston diameter 80.98mm , so if i have a value on my bore cylinder of 81.09 (81.01+0.08) im okey and still in the limit however its gonna be a clearance of 0.11mm ! which is over the max allowable piston to cylinder clearance 0.07 can u explain this to me please ?

I did my mk2 jetta block in a machine shop, had new oversize mahle pistons and they did a clearance of 0.08mm i measured when i got it back. After 4-5000km i can hear piston noises, at first were only cold but now all the time.

Smh, u wont believe my luck. Bought a car just for the block 750.00 took block to get machined gave them the pistons (same exact as ones in video) gave me back the 3 hundredths to big on the bore. After searching very upset found another block took it to another machine shop this time a performance engine builder with pistons and papper work asking for .004 piston wall clearance. Picked up my block asked if he got clearance correct says I didnt need it that he bored it to the paper work exact at top left of paper bore 3.268. I am so upset I just waisted 3 months and 1700.00 on engines and machine shops not including 750.00 in pistons. Very sad right now. Let's say my piston skirts were your same measurements trusting JE I figure they would be and bore is 83.01, what would you do and is it even build able. Thanks for reading true sad story as I sit on my couch frustrated.
@DecimalTenths
@DecimalTenths 4 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, sounds like a shit story that mind... I gave my machine shop my pistons, with my measurements and I then advised that I wanted 0.004" ptw clearance. They checked and confirmed my piston sizes then bored my block to suit. They then gave me back my block pistons and their measurement sheet. I believe that is the correct way to do it. The machine shop is then responsible for their work, plus I could check the work as per the video for due diligence before assembling. If they chose to follow the sheet instead of the real world measurement of the pistons then they have got it very wrong, and I wouldn't pay them...😲. If you've got an 83.01mm bore with 82.88 pistons then your clearance is 0.13mm (basically 5 and a bit thou). I'd personally say that's too big, as 0.003" is the norm for these pistons as per Badger5, and I am intentionally pushing them for track use. With 0.005" clearance there's a big chance you'll get piston slap when cold, with oil consumption over standard. I'd advise you find another block and try and get it right. It would be a shame to spend all the money, time and effort and end up with something sub par. Shit situation pal, but with engine building it has to be right ✅ . Hope you get sorted pal
