I found that if you ignore the images, read what he says, imagine what he says, and THEN look at his drawings- and THEN draw them- you’ll understand his methods a lot better.

Man, everyone is saying how I should "practice figure by simplifying it into boxes" but you are the only person on youtube who actualy gave me a reason to, because obviously if I just draw boxes whole day I will only improve at primitive form and perspective (which I did) but I would never learn to draw what I actualy want: realistic looking people and animals, your more complex organic forms as a next step after boxes are EVERYTHING I ever wanted to learn abouf form and you explained it all perfectly, great job!
@moderndayjames Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the kind words! I think my latest figure drawing video is a good follow up to this one that integrates all these methods of figure drawing together. Coming to this video as a student that once took art classes. I’ve had some past experience studying anatomy, doing live drawings of models and still lifes, even using bones and other objects for reference. But as someone who hasn’t drawn human anatomy in a long time, this purchase, and videos related to the subject, are a great refresher. I’m no Leonardo, but as someone who considers themselves an experienced intermediate, I always appreciate videos as a visual aid, especially if paired with books and other materials.

Hey James or anyone else who may be able to help with this. Can you explain or cover tilting forms in perspective a little better please? i know you have a small segment on one of your videos covering it but my pea sized brain is struggling understanding it still. Like a pelvis tilt below eye level with the weight bearing leg leading the pelvis to appear as if it's converging off the horizon. Do you just converge one set of lines that point in direction of the horizon and ignore the other ? like just draw it with straights as it's technically not converging to the horizon line you made ? that's the only way I can wrap my head around it . It kind of seems that's what you've done here on 3:52. you have the lines converge to the right vp for this twisted form and the ones that seem to not land on a horizon look straight.

i knew about "Claire Wendling", but I don't know the second one either and it's really bugging me. I think you were right that it's "Jaw Cooper", if you look here www.jawcooper.com/sketchbook there are some good examples of what he was talking about, boiling complex forms down into strong "2d shapes". Meaning like, if you look at the silhouette or negative space of any of these drawings I linked to, they really do manage to pack a lot of implied form into very economic use of line. Please let me know if you find who he was actually talking about though!

So i wouldn't get upset about your comment which prob is aimed at modern stuff.....
