The third and final film in the Heisei Gamera series, Revenge of Iris came three years after the second, which is an unusually long time for a Kaiju series. This film has many returning actors from the first, and a big boost to the quality of the special effects. The second film is only briefly mentioned in this however.. and how exactly does this film handle the balance between making the human characters useful, but keeping the monsters strong enough to be a threat and ensure Gamera is useful? Only one way to see...

The thing was in Japan during the 70’s Godzilla was losing its audience due to its kid friendly nature so they cut that bull shit and went with a more darker franchise and geared it towards a more older audience. Same went for Gamera. And remember Godzilla and Gamera were not meant to be child friendly during there first appearance.

The reason Gamera is being reckless in this movie is because he is desperate due to all the dormant Gyaos eggs starting to hatch, which is due to Gamera absorbing the earths mana to kill Mother Legion. Gamera has a soft spot for children because they are innocent. Plus if Gamera needed to turn on humanity he would leave children to start over.

My theory for why he randomly saves children is because the Atlantians created him to not only defeat Gyaos, but also to specifically protect children, as children were probably the most vulnerable victims to Gyoas. So i feel like Gamera is saving the kids out of instinct.

What Gamera needs are some allies. Some new badass, awesome kaiju to be introduced and hopefully hit it off with the fans as they team up shove a giant sized foot up evil's ass. It's one of the reasons we get behind Godzilla in the all-star films like Destroy All Monsters. It wasn't just getting to see Big-G. It was getting to see him beside the friends that have stuck with him through thick and thin and taken some serious beatings and dealt out some serious punishment at his side. I think Gamera would benefit from the same treatment. He could use the help. Plus....I'm a kaiju freak. I'm always up to see new, awesome monsters ready to kick evil ass.

Fun fact: There was a follow up to this movie, showing what happens between gamers and the swarm of gyaos but due to a falling out between that director and the studio it got canned after it was made and had a limited viewing but hasn’t seen the light of day ever since then. The director went on to make his own kaiju movies called deep sea monster reigo and raiga: god of monsters

If you are curious where Kaneko was going with his "4 Guardian Dragons" theme underlying this, he sort of picks it up over in "Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah, Giant Monsters All Out Attack". I remain convinced that he cobbled that together from unused ideas for Gamera 4.

It's based on the 4 guardian spirits in shinto mythology, which is based on Chinese mythology. You have the guardians of the 4 directions, the dragon of the south, the serpent of the east, the turtle of the west, and the tiger of the north. BTW in Chinese history, the south is the top of the map, meaning the dragon is the top spirit and the tiger is on the bottom. Gamera is the turtle, Iris is the dragon, Gaos was the serpent, and Legion was the tiger. No, it doesn't match up well with the character designs, but thats the idea.

Gamera is owned by Kadokawa Daiei. Toho did distribute the Heisei trilogy though because they owned most of the cinemas in Japan at the time.

Actually, Ayana is 16 in the film. Cuz she is depicted as a high school student which in Japan are ranged to be 15-18 of age. Also she was 12 during the events of Gamera, Guardian Of The Universe and the third film does take place literally 4 years after that event.

Sorry, but just correcting a mistake in your video. During the Gyaos/Gamera attack in Shibuya the building cut in 1/2 by Gyaos is not the 109 building but 0101 (MaruI pronounced Maru ee) department store. Gamera then fire balls 109 (Toukyu) department store. I enjoyed your review.

Actually the 90’s wasn’t the only time Japan was making dark franchises. The 80’s was too. Gamera was originally meant to be a dark movie in 1965 cuz it was made to be the equivalent of Gojira 1954.

I forgot how dumb this film is. Gamera causes more death and destruction than the supposed "bad monsters" do. Gamera III does not want to be a Gamera movie. It goes out of it's way to be as dark and edgy as it possibly can. Being the very definition of a try hard. It even has the gull to mock Gamera's usual status as a friend to children at one point. Damn near all of the human characters are detestable. There is absolutely zero reasons to root for Gamera in this because he's a mass murdering bastard. "Gamera Guardian Of The Universe" and "Gamera Advent Of Legion" were amazing films and excellent additions to the Gamera series. But to me, this overrated, misguided "Gamera" movie can pound sand.

I agree with almost everything you said. I watched the first 2 movies and loved them. Heard so many good things about this one and was severely disappointed after watching it. Maybe it was my fault for setting my expectations so high. I wanted to like it so much but I just couldn't. I know I'm in the minority but this was the weakest of the series for me.

My guy how at any point does this movie "mock" gamera's status as a friend to all children when you still had children watching this film back then?. You're NOT supposed to root for gamera at first because that's literally the point, he's the misunderstood hero of the movie meanwhile iris is the actual threat that you wouldn't expect due to how it goes from cute to threatening meanwhile gamera already looked threatening which was purposely done to make the audience doubt his intentions. There is a alot of spiritual presence in g3 that you clearly missed, g2 even established gamera is the protector of EARTH, NOT humanity entirely. He'll save humans sometimes willingly but if you're in his ways, he'll likely kill you as a consequence of him saving the planet. Godzilla literally does the same thing. What you call "misguided" is gamera finally becoming a mature character and stepping outside of the overly kid friendly he used to be which the first 2 entries in this trilogy already did good at, this entry just put the cherry on top.

The Title promised something that the movie just didn't cover. Gamera and Iris' fight is localized solely for the end, and the only part of the fight that is exciting is the aerial portion. The rest of the fight consists of Iris just pushing Gamera across the city and that's it. The stuff with Ayana's backstory is pretty well thought out...but it's brought down by several things. 1; Iris' origin story and his similarities to Gamera are never explained. 2; the grave-yard of Gameras is never explained in the movie. (I only found out that they were Prototype-Gameras after looking it up on the internet.) 3; Mito and Shinya were just...weird. Their beliefs and their devotion and motivations are never fleshed out in the slightest. Mito just seemed like a Radical Cultist who thought she was going to be some kind of savior. And Shinya just seemed stoned throughout the entire thing. I guess I'm the type of person who needs more of an explanation of these things while watching a monster movie. (It's also the reason why I hated Cloverfield.)

You missed a few things that were only explained in passing or hinted at: Shinya mentions how Gamera is just the finished product, but that there were prototypes - it's also hinted that he was brilliant enough to figure out Mana, and hence his Dreamcast-program got him the attention of Mito whom is most likely a direct descendant of the Atlantians - and hence understands more about the mystic stuff and the legends of Irys, Gyaos and Gamera. Mito has shown off this knowledge, which is top-secret, and hence gained favour with the government, since her family is the only one that has knowledge about these creatures. It's mentioned how "her blood has become thin" - meaning, she's descended from an Atlantian priestess - the role which Asagi (gamera-girl) attained when she became connected to Gamera via the control-medallion in the first movie. That's why Mito steals Ayana (iris-girl) - she wants the medallion and to transfer it to her, so that she can control Iris. (possibly to save Japan...? Possibly to... uh... rule the world?) So, yeah - it's all mostly IN the movie - Kaneko, the director, just demands more from his viewer, true engagement, than most Kaiju-directors - he doesn't spell everything out for you super-obvious - he merely gives you the tools to find the answers if you actually want to. (as a good teacher should) I got all of this, from just watching the movie... I haven't read any wiki-stuff.
