Ok listen. She is absolutely accurate here. I worked in HR for almost a decade before I joined the military, and now that I’m transitioning back into the civilian workforce, it has been CRUCIAL for me to be able to clearly articulate why the job I’m interviewing for at the time is a CALCULATED move in my transition and the perfect next step. Even if it isn’t *perfect*, you better sell it that way! You guys, if you haven’t done the story toolbox activity (she has several videos on it), DO IT. I did it. Yesterday I had an interview for a job I had no experience in, but had transferable skills, and using the stories I had prepared landed me a second interview with the director of the program. THIS WORKS. SERIOUSLY. Madeline, you’re a gem. And as a former HR professional, I can 100% speak to the things she’s saying as being TRUE. This KZbin channel is an absolute WEALTH of free job/interview/resume coaching that is HIGHLY effective.

@Orlokk Noxx I totally get that! I agree completely that honesty is the best policy as well, but what I’ve had to learn to do in my own search is even if the job isn’t my DREAM job, there’s a reason I’m applying other than, “You’re the only person hiring”. There’s always an experience to be gained regardless of what type of job you’re applying for, you just have to dig out those gems. And yes, hiring managers and interviewers are more interested in what your professional goals are when they ask you where you see yourself in 5 years, they’re looking to see if you’ll be a good fit and assess whether or not they think you’ll be an unmotivated flight risk. She has a video that discusses that a little as well that I found super helpful! You can still be honest and showcase why that transitional (or “crappy” 😉) job is the right next move for you to get you to where your dreams will take you *professionally*! I wish you great success in your journey to move to a bigger city!!

BINGO-interview is a SELL and sadly lots of folks are not geared for a sale, and HR doesn't appreciate that they aren't in a selling mode, so they DISMISS the product cuz they didn't articulate why they applied. HR needs to be LESS lazy. I have worked with so many HR nightmares, cuz HR was LAZY and DUH, anyone can TELL your a story (another word for LIE in some circles) and they get them in the job and they can't perform. But OH they could tell you a story, or fake a resume, and HR was SNOWED entirely, just saying.

Testimony: In April I applied for a Fortune500 company. I went through an online assessment, video recorded interview and a final interview with the hiring manager (via zoom). I felt the interview went great! The interviewer was very nice and personable and I spent weeks practicing and watching your videos so I was confident that I had nailed it! 8 days later I received a denial email. I was absolutely crushed, tried not to let it get me down and focus on what I could have done differently. 3 days after receiving the denial the recruiter emailed me encouraging me to apply to a similar position that had become available. I applied and 4 days later I was called with an offer! The position I was offered even paid more than the initial position I applied for! Thank you sooo much for the content you post! It has truly helped build my confidence and really showcase my skills!

@@kubra_sultan exactly as the hiring professional why is it they DO this to candidates, RED FLAG of unprofessionalism imho. It is the WORST game we play in life is trying to find places to utilize our talents and abilities when MOST companies see you as expendable, aren't practicing a LICK of integrity, and lay off, fire or get rid of PRODUCING employees for those that are cheaper but can't DO a job. Then scream bloody murder when their bottom line suffers. DUH.

Avoiding rambling and being specific! I came across this advice in the past and started to implement it by picking a couple of items that could tie into my current resume or explain something on my resume with some more detail. I would then practice my answers and time myself. Since doing this I have only had one interview that didn't result in a job offer. These are two gems that really changed the interviewing process for me and also resulted in higher-than-expected wage offers.

I found out my problem is I am not as good on zoom. I often sense the interviewer uncomfortable and I hold back. I finally had my first in person interview and nailed an offer! Also I fail personality tests!! My interviewer said you are not strong on paper but Amazing on person, the test does not reflect how you truly are! Ugh I would love a video on those crazy raven personality tests

I worked as an analyst for a few years, and kept getting passed on when I went into interviews well prepared. Well, so I thought. I watched about 20 SMM vids, put in the work, did the research, and landed a job that tripled my income. My life is very different than it was 4 months ago. Not only is my life different, but I've helped 3 people close to me take off in their careers. It goes like this, "Here watch this video and we will talk later." Then I receive a text in all caps that starts off with "OMG, I can't believe that it is this simple". Translation = I can't believe there is a systematic formula for this.

I am getting tons of interviews. Used to be a few years ago, I would apply and resume would go into black hole. But these days no problem. I apply for positions and get so many responses and interviews. I think I've gotten more interviews in the past few months than I have gotten in my entire career. The only problem? I'm not landing any jobs! It's been only a few months but still. I would think I'd get at least an offer. I'm qualified for them. I think I may be rambling. These are mid level jobs. Messed up thing is some of these interviews even gave me the questions ahead of time.

Do you believe companies could be hesitant to hire someone who they need to sponsor? I truly believe many companies just don't want to do that.

I wish I could figure out an alternative. It has become so complex and convoluted that moving thru the interview process for only one job is overwhelming- then after investing hours on applying, preparing doing questionnaires and creating requested work samples only to find out that I didn’t get the job is such a total waste of my time- 3 weeks in and 20-30 hrs later and now I have to start all over . Super frustrated - I’ve been trying to find a good job that I’m excited about since moving 4 yrs ago. I’ve found nothing. At least these video from SMM are helping me get interviews. If I didn’t need to put a roof over my head and pay my bills and eat I’d give up on this racket.

Hi Madeline, Great videos and very helpful tips. Love watching your content for self development.❤️ I have a quick question. Lately, I have been through many interviews but none of them are getting converted. I met many mentors and industry experts who said my profile and experience looks great. I have tried many other avenues to find gaps as well. I kind of concluded that being on a visa is a biggest barrier for me. Based on your experience, do you know if companies know if they will be sponsoring visa or they like to check the candidate out first? Let me know what your thoughts are and if you have any suggestions. Getting really tired of being in this limbo of getting interviews but not landing offers. Thanks!

Some of us got 2 final round interviews in the past two months after waiting/communicating intermittently with HR across a 3-month span from the first interviews. So I was supposed to communicate how the position fits my goals during interviews that are more technical or whether I'd be an ideal fit in nature too?

The "Where do you see yourself in 5 years" question is absolutely the most bullshit question at job interviews. I mean, my dad was 78 and when he went for a job interview they actually asked him where he sees himself in 5 years. He was thinking to himself "I don't even know if I'll be alive in 5 years, and even if I am I probably won't be working"! Of course he didn't give that as his answer. He came up with some bullshit response that sounded good, but still didn't get the job.
