My new decluttering habit is: when I get an Amazon delivery (way too many!) instead of recycling the box I have to fill it with items to take to the thrift store...items in/items out!
@CarrieOnCoaching2 ай бұрын
What a great idea!! I am going to implement that one right away!!
@lauraann78162 ай бұрын
I like that/your take on it. A lot of people say if you buy a new sweater get rid of a sweater. If you buy 2 new pairs of jeans let 2 pair go. I collect mugs. I love my mugs. I use my mugs. So I don't want to get rid of a mug. But maybe I can declutter a pair of shoes I wore once and just don't want them. Or a book already read and I don't re-read books. Or mis matched/odd plates. Does anyone else have those? TFS
@suziedowning88292 ай бұрын
@@lauraann7816 Yes! Your idea is great! I wouldn't get rid of anything that truly brings you joy. I don't have any particular items I fill my Amazon box with, I just know I have many items that can be donated when I am bringing more into the house. Today I took a medium size box of clothes to the thrift store that I never wear. I have done that several times, so my closet is pared down to only 1) items that actually fit, and 2) items I know I will wear.

2 days ago while going through random 💩 I found a sweatshirt that says Super Grandpa on it. I bought it for my daughter to give my dad when she was little. I lost my daughter in 2007 in an accident. My mom died suddenly in 2018. My dad lost his 3-year battle with cancer 86 DAYS LATER. I washed the sweatshirt and I am wearing it while watching you. I understand your point and agree with it. But Super Grandpa will be staying with me ❤

My heart is breaking for you! That is a lot of loss, and I am with you on this one. If that sweatshirt brings you comfort and peace, it is serving you. I wouldn’t declutter it either. I have beautiful things from my mom that hold much deeper meaning and memories for me which I will never part with.

I literally just took all my crafting supplies to a low income nursing home across town and school supplies to the poorest school in my area. These are things I don’t need/use anymore. They were both filling up drawers in my guest bedroom. I even took 14 bags of clothes and shoes to the local shelter. It felt great to be rid of the stuff and see the clean empty space instead.

My main goal for decluttering & simplifying my life is because having to sort through my parents belongings & other family members, I don't want that to be my kids inheritance. I have seen too many families torn apart over the fighting that goes on due to stuff. I have already spoken with my kids & told them if there is anything that they want of mine, let me know now. Otherwise it's gotta go. It has been an ongoing decluttering process for the past few years & I have much more to go, but like I said... it's a process. I have many projects that I've saved for my retirement years which I no longer have the desire nor ambition to do. It's become a fantasy life and it's time to let go of that season & move on. Much of the "stuff" that I have spent money & time acquiring, I could've probably survived without. In fact, I know I could have. Thanks for this reminder for me to keep on decluttering & simplifying my life.

Since many of us are wearing smart watches with built in timers, this makes it useful to keep on track even when moving around the house. Thank you, you have touched my heart and helped me tremendously to understand the "why" it is so important to let go of things. I have been working on it for a few months (forced to do it because we are moving in early 2025) the forcing to face it made it very hard at first. I didn't think so much about the why and there was such sadness. I had many boxes of my children's drawings, and toys and little mementos that I had not opened or looked into for 30+ years. I was saving them for "one day" "grandkids" what day? Your video is the catalyst for me to just let the rest go. I have one box of memories that I am keeping, it will be a box I take out and do actually enjoy from time to time. My last pair of ballet slippers, my children's favourite teddy bear, just a few things that we can share from time to time pull the small manageable box out and enjoy. I don't need 15 boxes of toys or memories. I also took photos of some of the things before donating them, so that I could remember that way and made an album on my social media. I'm 73 and moved to a new home in June 2024 and didn't clear before I packed up to move out my old home. Now, I'm dealing with having brought a lot of stuff I hadn't looked at or used for 8 years and didn't get rid of while I had the opportunity. My problem seems to be that I think I should try to donate everything, anything that someone else might be able to use. The reality is that a lot of stuff just needs to be thrown out. I have piles of donations and just need to put one or two boxes in the car every few days and take them to the local thrift store and let them handle the things. I don't want to give them junk, but I can't make those decisions. Start the process: that's the key.
@CarrieOnCoachingАй бұрын
That sounds overwhelming and frustrating!! Yes, just start!! One box at a time. You can do this. Maybe you have a friend who can come over and help you. That will make it more fun and you would have another set of eyes to help with the decision making.

If getting rid of the old sweatshirt is too hard, how about make a pillow/cushion cover with it. Even if you put another cover over it, each time you wash the outer cover you see the sweatshirt your mom had. The baking sheets item made me laugh. About 3 yrs ago I did this declutter, now down to 4; 2 nice ones that fit side by side for cookies ( no one else can use them, like sewing scissors lol) and 2 dark ones for French fries, baked potatoes, etc. this is the perfect number for me.

Thank you, great support! While listening to you, I just deleted about 1,000 photos and emails from my phone. I struggle with decluttering. If I look in my closet and have 100 things that should go, I can manage to get rid of 1-5 items. This is not very helpful! Help!
@CarrieOnCoachingАй бұрын
1-5 is a start. Imagine if you did that everyday until your closet felt manageable!! If you look at the enormity of the closet, you will get stuck. Just look at 5 items a time, or just the pants, just the shoes, etc. You can do this!!

Get smaller boxes! Liquor stores have boxes that a re easy to carry and will hold most that I’m getting rid of. I have one that holds OTHER ROOM. Instead of taking things to other rooms I collect them in this box and distribute all at once. That way I’m focused on my current room rather than going into another room and getting distracted. As in.. taking shoes left near my recliner, to the closet and noticing that I need to mend a couple of things. Put it on the list for that room or area. A list will remind me of what is a priority.

As I pull out my Christmas boxes (lots of them) I do have trouble (actually can’t do it) decluttering and “getting rid” of anything. I am thinking (it’s my plan) to have my adult children to go thru it all once I retire BEFORE I donate to goodwill because many of the items were my grandmother’s decor, and some stuff is new but not sure if they would like the items for their houses at Christmas.

Go ahead and do it now. I asked my son and his wife and they don't want anything! Younger people today just don't have attachments to history and family things. You may be holding onto things that no one wants.
@CarrieOnCoachingАй бұрын
@@kb1236 so true! But I would also advise keeping anything that has deep family meaning, because after they start having kids, family heirlooms and special things may begin to mean more to them. I know they did to me.

I think if they are special to you, keep them, but perfume does go bad, so if it the perfume itself you want to keep, I would make sure it is still good.

Decluttering to me means putting things away. PURGING means getting rid of it how ever works. I have been the same size for 40 years. Yep, I am going to wear those tartan plaid skirts again... I am wearing the red plaid this holiday season with my mom's full length mink! I love shopping in the closets in my attic. Going shopping at a store is highly over rated.

Go digital with all of your bills - solves a lot of the mail problem. Unasked for catalogs - easy - trash 'em. Or if you have time to waste, call each one and tell them to remove you. I had to threaten AARP with the Attorney General if they continued to send me one more unsolicited email, post card, piece of junk mail to try to get me to subscribe to their crap membership. Zero memberships here - waste of money.
