COVID was a huge trauma to most people. Her need to buy and hoard food was shared by many, most not having the courage to show it in this way. Her urge was prompted by a desire to keep her family safe and fed. To save money, by getting things on sale for a future date, it just got out of control. I'm happy that she's taking steps to get her house and life back under control so she can enjoy herself and her home. Kudos for Carla for helping in this way !!! Best wishes

Dear Carla, it's so great your sister lets us be part of her journey💜. My husband and I also got caught up in the hoarding frenzy for a while. We are from Germany and during the pandemic was the first time since the war that some things were actually not available. Sure our grandparents told us about the shortages they faced but to see empty shelves in the supermarket with your own eyes... I think that caused a lot of fear in a lot of people. I'm glad my husband and I realised what was happening to us, we agreed on some rules and now we're down to a normal level of stuff again. But it also gave me some insight into how my grandparents and parents feel (mostly subconsciously I think) and why it's so hard to get them to throw stuff away. If the world around you feels so unsure, you just want to hang onto things to make you feel safe and prepared. Well, we are really looking forward to another video of you and your lovely Family. And especially Samson of course🐾💜

It's hard and I think yall are doing great, but the tough love here is, food goes in in the kitchen. The kitchen is the boundary/container, to keep you from buying more than can fit. Office/pantry encourages breaking that boundary. Given the amount that was thrown out and never eaten in this video, there's no need to go beyond the boundary of the kitchen.
@susannovak8263 Жыл бұрын
They are doing a fantastic job! And that’s probably a very good idea. Or maybe expand the food boundary into a nearby closet as well. But putting food with other things into a completely separate room just means that the food will not get used.

If you want to keep a large amount of shelf stable food, it needs to be extremely organized, dated to notice, and the oldest pulled forward. Needless to say, you must consistently pull from it to actually use. It is a part time job managing it. Date the items as you bring them into the house and put them away correctly immediately. Otherwise, don’t prep as much.

I think we all buy extra thinking we will use it at some point. When it comes to food expiration date, "best by" doesn't mean you have to immediately throw it out. Like soup, it won't kill you if it is several years old. The quality is less. "Use by" you should dispose. I've bought expensive candy/snack bags at Costco only to find I didn't like how it tasted. Stared at it a long time before I could throw it out! I am embarrassed to say that I found baking soda from 1994 and canned unsweetened milk from 2013 in my pantry. Totally understand sis's frustration with going through the food.

I think you can tell a lot about the anxieties and wants a person is dealing with from their hoard...so much of what your sister has revolves around the themes of wellness and survival, of not wanting to waste anything, and she also seems to have a lot of curiosity new things. Obviously hoarding is a maladaptive way to deal with those impulses, but those are all good impulses. I hope that as she lets go of all the junk, it gives her space to focus on those things in healthier ways.
@LynsAlteredArts Жыл бұрын
Very insightful. I never thought about it that way, but yes, all the things she saves are wellness items, food, supplements, exercise equipment and gadgets that will be magic. I have a relative who is a hoarder but what she saves is sentimental items, or things she perceives is sentimental when a lot of other people wouldn’t. If her friend from elementary school 60 years ago scribbled a little picture for her, she saves it.

I have been watching your videos recently to help get ideas on how to clean out the storage room at my dad's house that was my grandparents office at one point and has stuff from my grandparents and great grandparents as well as stuff from my dad's childhood to now as well as some stuff from my childhood and stuff I have collected for when my boyfriend and I get our own place. For Christmas a couple years ago I got an air fryer and bought myself an insta pot because I was living in my mom's guest house at the time but ever since I moved back to my dads house he already had those two items and I didn't want to get rid of mine cause they are expensive I just put mine in the storage room

Your sister is an absolute star, allowing us into these rooms. I have nothing but applause for her, that she is tackling this head on with your help and guidance.

Your sister has a great sense of humor and she is blessed to have the help she needs to declutter and organize.
