It's easy to declutter trash and things that we clearly aren't using, but what about things for someday? Or items we just aren't sure if we'll need in the future? Introducing Mr. Justin Case to help us navigate this tricky territory!
LOOKING FOR MORE SUPPORT?
We have a few ways that we can come alongside you:
1) PRIVATE DECLUTTERING GROUP:
This takes place in a private Facebook group. Here's what you can expect:
5-10 minute videos each weekday with guided decluttering tasks
monthly themes, weekly challenges
1 hour live guided decluttering sessions each week for accountability
encouragement & support from other members
cost is $11/month
This is ideal if you're looking for more motivation & accountability.
To learn more and to sign up, visit here: cli.re/minimal...
2) DECLUTTER YOUR HOME IN 15 MINUTES A DAY WORKBOOK:
This workbook is designed to walk you through decluttering each area of your home in 15 minute lessons.
168 full color pages
easy to follow lessons designed for limited time & energy
our key concepts (like inventory, the silent to-do list, the endowment effect & more) are spread throughout the book, too
Ideal for those looking for a self-paced guidebook to declutter their home quickly & efficiently.
The workbooks are $20 (digital or spiral bound)
Shipping: $4 flat rate domestic US
Find more details here
Physical Workbook: cli.re/Spiral-...
Digital Workbook: cli.re/Digital...
3) TWO COURSES TO CHOOSE FROM:
Take Your House Back Course with Dana, Cas & I: www.takeyourho...
Declutter Your Home in 15 Minutes a Day Course: cli.re/Course
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO COURSES:
Take Your House Back is hosted with three of us, myself, Dana from A Slob Comes Clean and Cas from Clutterbug. We talk big picture about how to declutter and focus a lot of attention on working through obstacles like sentimental items, unsupportive family members and other hang-ups. This course is FUN, there is a lot of involvement from all three of us and the ideas are specific to those who haven't been successful in the past.
Ideal for those who have been decluttering for a long time with little success and those looking for more community and support.
In the Declutter Your Home in 15 Minutes a Day course we go through the workbook, breaking down specific areas of your home in detail to be able to declutter faster and with more confidence. If you want to know specifics (like how many of each thing to keep) this course is for you.

Thank you for this wisdom. I have an extremely hard time with this. "Justin Case" syndrome runs deep in my family. My mother and grandparents lived in communist Cuba where they often went hungry and simple things like toothpaste were scarce, so when they finally escaped to the states, they developed a serious hoarding tendency. My siblings and I were sort of indoctrinated into this way of thinking: "What if we lose our freedoms? What if the country becomes communist and you can no longer buy things? What if, what if, what if?" The Justin Case method is based on an underlying fear of the unknown, which can be difficult to resolve. However, I really believe it's not worth it to live with a burden of belongings out of fear and anxiety about the future. It's better to trust in Jesus and live in freedom, knowing our Heavenly Father takes care of us no matter what.
@shellbell2167

I completely agree. I have a hard time with “just in case” as well b/c I grew up extremely poor and you always learned to hold onto things b/c you never knew if you would be able to afford it again. I still have the same mindset now.
@JamieM470

@@shellbell2167 Yes! And that mindset was reinforced during 2020, when you couldn't find rubbing alcohol and toilet paper in the stores. Now there are videos telling us that this year flour, sugar, rice, etc are going to be scarce & hard to come by. I refuse to participate in the panic, stress, and anxiety. I think we'll all be just fine.

This is one of my favorite videos! I also thought Tom was going to pop out of the cabinet!😂 My parents lived through the depression & kept everything! But didn't realize the extent until after they both where in Heaven. After my daddy passed my mother would not let me go through his things. She passed away in 2022, 12 years after him. For the past year I have been going through their belongings. Paper work from the 1950's, 6 closets of clothes of all sizes, etc. They even kept broken items in the outdoor shed! I guess those items were the"Justin Case" a part was needed for another item. I get the tendency to keep everything honestly & trying so hard to break it! Not only am I trying to declutter, I'm also battling the sentimental aspect of the items I'm decluttering. Everytime I begin to declutter an area and get overwhelmed, I pull up one of your videos to encourage me during the daunting task! This video gave me not only the encouragement needed for today, it gave me a great big chuckle that was much needed! Thank you so much Dawn for all your videos and Tom "Justin Case" too!

A couple of years ago I recognized that, although I was pretty minimal, I was susceptible to trying out new hair care products that I ended up not liking and then also not throwing out. So I made a rule: if you purchase a hair care product, you have to use it up before you go back to what you love. Well…, as you might imagine, I’ve purchased a new product exactly once in the last 2 years. I didn’t like but I used it and learned a lesson. I’m 64 and still getting it figured out ladies!

This was a memorable, funny and helpful video. My husband is a “Justin Case” kind of guy BUT he has decided to be ruthless going through all the stuff he has saved over the last 20 years. One cargo trailer has been filled and is gone. We are working on the second one. I think this is more like Swedish death clean which i totally agree with because my siblings and I got stuck cleaning out 40 yrs of my parents’ stuff and my grandmother’s and grandfather’s stuff. I joke about it being child abuse. It is not a good thing to have to deal with all this stuff after someone has passed. I do not want to leave all my useless stuff for my children to have to go through. I have learned, that just because something meant something to someone else, doesn’t mean it holds the same value to me. I don’t have to keep it for them now that they are gone.

"just because something meant something to someone else, doesn’t mean it holds the same value. I don’t have to keep it for them now that they are gone." My husband passed away 6 months ago, and a lot of his "treasures" and "Justin Cases" are what is cluttering up the house. A part of me feels like a cad for getting rid of things that meant so much to him, so I really needed to hear this. Thank you

My parents passed & my mom had an old glass dish with a lid. Like fancy for candy. It was green & ornate. It had been broken into many pieces & she had glued it back together. I believe it was her mom's or grandma's. I let it go but later felt a pang of regret for not caring more about something she cared so much for. But keeping it would have also made me sad. My mom was a sentimental hoarder & so am I. I know she would want me to have peace & be free of the chaos of too much. I hope I can get there. 🙏

The one piece of advice I have found the most helpful from your channel is to pass along items if someone else can make good use of it NOW rather than holding onto them until you might need them again. I started giving a majority of my oldest son's clothes to a family at church. By the time our new baby will need them we would have been storing them for over 3 years. Several children can use them during that time, and it feels good to share!

I promise that in 4 weeks time when I hand in my PhD thesis I will look around my life at all the things I kept in case I had time when it was done and be honest about them. I've been working on this thesis for a third of my life. So many other things I put off because of the guilt of doing things that weren't work or thesis (so I did nothing instead). Need to mourn and let go of all those 'future selves' which will never be and be happy with who I became instead.

The pillow scene was hilarious! I love the name tags on everything. I think if I went around and did that, it would bring a lot more light on some items that should go! I did give away an aspirational/just in case/$$$$$ sunk cost grill today. After many purchased and lightly used grills over my adult life I have finally admitted to myself that I’m not someone who wants to grill out. Invite me to a barbecue and I’m all in but I don’t want to do it 😛

My eldest son will be 44 in July and I've been waiting for him and my other two children to "come back home". Well, they are not coming back home to stay. They have their own households. Justin Case is "leaving" too...Thanks to you two for helping me to really see the things in my house for what they really are. You made me laugh and got your point across and I thank you for that.

Oh my, I was raised by grandparents that lived through the Great Depression. Needless to say, the save for a ‘rainy day’ is ingrained pretty deeply. I do have more inventory than I need and it is a major job to keep it all sorted and stored. I am, one category at a time, paring it all down. Thanks for all the cheery support and inspiration!

I NEED to share this with all of you, specially if you are struggling with "What if I need this"!! This happened to me this week and it has *changed my life*. I am an artist/crafter and i find it *EXTREMELY DIFFICULT* to throw things away, but this week, as I was holding up my crafting papers/die cuts/glitters/etc, asking myself "but what if I need this 😭!" A little voice entered my mind and whispered something so amazing, so profound and life changing that it gave me that "A-HA" click that I needed!!!!! And I'm going to share it with you all because this WORKS. Next time you're stuck & asking yourself "but what if i need this" just counter with this BEAUTIFUL sentence: *"Just use something else, then"* BOOM COMPLETE MAGIC. "what if I need this dress for an occasion ?" Just wear something else, then. "What if I need this patterned paper for a craft project ?" Just use something else, then. "What if I need this for that" just use something else!!! If you DIDN'T have that specific thing, you WOULD be using something else This phrase has been KEY in helping me declutter all unused items that I had difficulty parting with and I hope that this reaches someone who needs to hear it!!!

I am the Justin Case person so I needed this video. I save all kinds of craftable items Justin Case the mood hits me to craft and I might need them. I just turned 70 and I am starting to GET IT! I forget which channel I was watching that mentioned "SABLE" Stash Accumulation Beyond Life Expectancy. It has been on my mind ever since. Dawn, you said that nothing gets stored for free. Boy is that ever true. We have been paying storage fees most of our adult life for things we can't store at home and guess what; we can't use them AT the storage place and we have to decide what is there and when to bring it home in hopes of using it. It usually doesn't happen. We just pay to store it!

There was a video you made some time ago where you were in the bathroom and you had people open their banking apps and then recheck their balance when they were finished decluttering. That has been monumental in my decluttering progress. COMPLETELY changed the game for me. And unlike many others who have said they don't regret decluttering things, for me, there have actually been MANY times where I was like, "OH NO! I wish I didn't let that go!" HOWEVER, I would never ever ever ever ever go back and undo my progress for those things. Because even though I wish I had them when I was looking for them.. I can barely recall what they were now!

I got rid of decades of sewing supplies, fabric, the Singer sewing machine, and serger. An avid sewer in the past, I have survived. I also donated all my books to the Friends of the Library and now read only ebooks from the library on the Libby app, or the free ebooks as an Amazon Prime member on the Kindle app. I don't have to manage regular books in my house from the library, nor spend the time and gas to pick up and return them. I have the added bonus of enlarging the font to a comfortable reading level. After your hilarious video today, I, unfortunately, had to break up with Justin Case (even though he was quiet, he was sneaky!). Thank you for bringing him to my attention!!

Returning to sewing when the kids get just a bit older..... I finally sorted through my "someday I will mend" basket and ended up donating a dress I made for my daughter when she was six. She had just celebrated her 30th birthday by that time! Another item that came to light was a favorite skirt which was part of a set - top and skirt and shorts - and by that time had been in my mending basket for 15 years! So now - I have a choice - I keep a mending basket - and try to designate 1 day a month to mend EVERYTHING in the basket - or out it goes! It's not perfect - but, hey, it's better than waiting 24 years for it to be mended! (the dress only needed one small rip in the hem fixed and one button replaced!)

Years ago i was given a pasta making machine. I made pasta once twice and then gave up, partly because it was so hard to clean. It sat in the cupboard all these years just in case I wanted to make pasta again. So in decluttering I thought “ Right, im giving myself 3 months to use it, or else …Well, when the 00 pasta flour went past its best before date I decided it was time. Wonderful! No more guilt about not making pasta, and more cupboard space… what’s not to like? Thankyou Dawn for all the encouragement

Tips for fancy knitters!! 1) stick to interchangeable needle set(s). Downsize tools and project bags. NO ONE needs 20 project bags. 2) don’t double up on knitting needles. If one size is busy on a dormant project, this will push you to unravel or finish it 3) don’t impulse buy yarn (except a couple sock yarns maybe) 4) keep a list of your favourite yarn dyers. Shop updates create a FOMO feeling but there is always beautiful yarn out there! 5) keep your stash contained: one bin or one dresser, whatever you are comfortable with 6) to get there, fear not donating or gifting some skeins. Some less fortunate knitters will love your fancy yarn and you will be making a difference! 7) embrace donating knits that you are not wearing. Clean, gleen, use a safety pin to pin a tag with care instructions and let it go to goodwill. 8) try to avoid creative burnout/competition/ guilt. For most, this means sticking to one project at a time. Love, a minimalist yarn dyer 🖤

My mom grew up after the depression and everything is kept just in case. It is so hard to convince her she can go to the store and replenish because why throw out “good stuff”…all the way down to the expired medications, expired canned foods, etc. I keep on having to promise I won’t throw away things that are good without running it by her. We started decluttering the house she and my dad have lived in for the last 50 years…married 56! Needless to say, it’s taking FOREVER, but I’m getting to spend a lot of time with her which I cherish♥️ Thank you for giving me guidance throughout this process 😊

My grandmother kept a "flat" (12 cans) of each: peas, green beans, creamed corn and beets under her bed. She was very good about rotating her stock and she & my step-grandfather went to the store EVERY DAY to replenish anything they had used. When I asked my Dad about it, he said they were SO poor during the Depression, my grandmother told him she vowed to never be without a full cupboard again. Those times impacted people for life.

That’s the thing. Once you have an instance where times are tight & you can’t just go get it if you need it even if it’s a thrift store, it’s hard to get rid of stuff. Or if there’s a history of last minute demands. Sure I only wear Khaki pants once every 5 years, but every time I need to wear them I’ve given zero notice from those demanding I wear them for work or whatever & what if I’m running low on funds at the time? My brain can’t get past that it’s easier to keep 1 pair of pants “just in case” than face the possible stress of getting it last minute or when funds are low.

Both my parents grew up in the depression, dad was in foster care as well. So Justin Case was the redheaded step child in our family. It's really hard to kick Justin to the curb, but Dawn is helping me get there! EXCEPT, this weekend, a holiday weekend, we were doing some home repairs, and hubby needed some stupid part, and I had one in inventory. Went to my toolbox, pulled the part out and danced across the kitchen floor singing 🎵🎶 I'm a hoarder!🎵🎶🤣🤣😂 30 second because of Justin, whereas a trip to the store would have been 3 hours and $6 in gasoline to get there! Oye!

Books and homeschool curriculum! 😱I have 8 kids so I always feeling like “we might use this someday” or “just in case a child likes this better”. It’s maddening and I want my space/time back. I think a lot of these feelings play into the “fantasy self” or the homeschool mom I’d like to be. My reality is we need materials that are of quality, but simple!

I've pared down my craft items recently. I noted that the things I held on to became outdated, even some fabrics. This is especially true for electronics like sewing machines, photo printers, stamp pads, stamps! and scrapbooking supplies. They just looked old, and not vintage old. My scrapbooking "how to" books were old and had no embellishments in them. I gave a lot of the stuff away. Now I'm much like your Mom, I just want to do the hobby and not spend a lot of time looking for stuff and putting it away afterwards. Plus, now I work on a project until it's done. I don't start a new one until the one I'm working on is done. It's motivating actually.

The pillows cracked me up! One way to look at those is that you get to choose what you enjoy abundantly because you've gotten rid of the things that would obscure your enjoyment of the throw pillows. I was thinking as you were mentioning your mom's decluttering and simplifying her crafts about how she prefers, in retirement, to be surrounded by "the action" and it makes perfect sense. With three active kids in the home (I also have twins and a singleton! ages almost-7 and just-turned-5), I also love the idea of a room of my own, but I can totally see, once one has a home of one own (empty nest), that being with family when they are around would be preferable.
