I think Paul's musical abilitys helped this song immensely. His bass and the fuzz bass are really what drive most of the song. Bet this song was hard for George to get music for, it is very unusual.

I completely agree. Rubber Soul is a masterpiece and certainly in my top four or top three, and this song just features such a great arrangement, melody, chord sequence, message and the use of the fuzz bass was quite an innovation; it was a rather new instrument back in 1965 and the Beatles were some of the first to use it.

@@DavidSumeray_BassGod I wish all the bass players could hit the bottom of the lake with such flair. in 1965 there were only 4 track recorders, the bass of this song has a saturated buzz pedal plus the sound of the hoffner ... rock roll bitch
@davidkemmer3 жыл бұрын
@@DavidSumeray_BassGod I noticed the same. Some of these deconstructions are worse than this one! I recall reading an excerpt from Geoff Emerick's ( Beatles engineer) book entitled "My Life Recording the Beatles", that they were disappointed at the quality of the bass at these sessions and in English pop records from this period in general. Emerick recalled how a traveling Motown show played in London and requested to use EMI studios to rehearse and lay down some tracks. The management and engineers were only too happy to oblige as they recognized an opportunity to find out how the Motown engineers got such a good bass sound. i recall Emerick saying that they learned that the difference was not so much in how the bass was recorded but rather how deep the grooves were cut in the master discs used for printing records. Deeper grooves allowed for more bass as the stylus was less likely to jump out of the groove. (Those of us who grew up with record players will understand this immediately!). This was the main difference between American and British records of that time period. On another note, did anybody see the capo McCartney is using on his bass in the picture above? I have never seen or heard of a bass player using a capo. Another example of how how open the Beatles were to experimentation. LOL! Great tune! Thanks for the deconstruction
@DavidSumeray_BassGod3 жыл бұрын
In the record his bass is well defined. I've always been impressed by Paul's fuzz bass part on this but it's somehow lost in an otherwise excellent separation of instruments. I've heard Paul's bass clearly on other separations. As a bass player I particularly appreciate hearing Paul's parts clearly.

Horrible sounding fuzz, but on the other hand, it's exactly as it should sound. A pretty daring move... Leave it to McCartney. It's the same sound Harrison used for the Anthology 2 Version of "Hello Goodbye." Absolutely NO sustain, but unique. On a side note, I don't think the Beatles knew a thing about adjusting intonation. Nearly every song they played, the guitar suffered from poor intonation. But then again, that was half the magic. Those imperfections made the song that much more special. In contrast, everything recorded today is "tuned" to perfection, including lousy voices. And we KNOW what these songs sound like.
