Believe it or not John didn’t use the Rickenbacker in this song or most of the Cosmo’s Factory. In fact he used almost exclusively both of his Les Paul Customs with the exception of “Who’ll stop the Rain”( that is the Ric, and recorded way earlier than the rest of the album). In an interview with Vintage Guitar Magazine, John basically stated that by the time they Cosmo’s Factory recording sessions he had basically phased out the Ric 325 in the Studio entirely. The Ric 325 was replaced by his first LPC that was converted 3/4 scale length in March 1969. He added a Bigsby B5 whammy bar for standard tuning. In April of 69 he bought a second Les Paul to leave stock for Open D tuning. He grew really frustrated and really hated the Ric’s extremely poor tuning stability.
