This video tutorial shows me making a simple solitaire ring with a more ornate basket setting with 12 prongs. For this one I used a 13 mm pink round brilliant Cubic Zirconia. The materials I used were: 18 gauge sterling silver round wire, 14 gauge sterling square wire, and 10 gauge sterling square wire. This one includes the basic steps to build this fancy 12 prong setting from scratch. As always I am using exclusively hard silver solder, and I use My-T-Flux from Rio Grande. I would rate this one as an advanced project. This video is a bit longer, but is a detailed tutorial, so I think it is worth the watch time. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others, as I've taught people for most of my life. This hobby turned into a fun side gig for me for years while I taught public school. I love suggestions and hearing about others' experiences. What is your favorite project? What kind of tutorials would you find useful?

Hi Chad (out loud while I'm watching, lol)! I can't tell you how delighted - and relieved - that you DIDN'T just opt for gallery wire. Bravo!! 👏👏👏💪💪💪💪 And, I love how you express confidence and humility, how refreshing! Would love to know how you decided that the file handle was the right size for the rings so that they made the right size of setting for the diameter of the stone! I appreciate that you really brought us along on your figuring it out process. Most groovy technique on this ring. 👌

Thanks Flying Chef! Is using gallery wire a standard practice? I never even thought to use that as I’ve never really liked how it looked:). As far as the file handle, after I divided the base length into 6 sections, rings made around that were just about the right size. I keep various sizes of brass rods, dapping punches, pencils, and other cylindrical things of different sizes about just so I can quickly make various size jump rings. Thanks for always saying such nice things Flying Chef!

@Chad’s Silversmithing Thank you for that, I always want to learn! So appreciate you! I, too, have been pretty much a non-fan of gallery wire. It seems (to me) to have morphed from decor to pure lazy use. Using a gallery bezel just excuses any attention to proper security unless one uses glue (which is shoddy workmanship) or gallery wire so heavy and in proportions that hide the stone. It's good for me to remember that it can be used as an embellishment to/in design. Hey, when did I become such a fabrication snob? Gotta work on that. Hahaha! 🌺

Lol, your comment about therapy and pounding the jewellery really resonates. You said in your previous life you were an English teacher, I was a therapist specialising in co-occurring addiction and mental illness. I would come home to hubby, who got home an hour before me, and he would be there with a coffee and a hammer for me, lol. When people asked me what I did to unwind, I would say I like to bang stuff and then show them my jewellery. Forging is very therapeutic.

Thanks Dave! I appreciate your nice comment. This one was kind of a treat because my prototype went so badly that I was expecting it to be a rough one. Turns out a slightly different strategy made it much easier, and the result came out looking clean and symmetrical, much to my surprise:). Take care!

Hi Chad great idea to build from scratch, but when forcing the bezel from cylinder to cone the biggest stress is on the weakest part, the joint between the rings. You have commented in the past on the strange action when bending square wire to a circle that results in a 3D coil. This effect could be captured here as you bend the rectangular section into the cone. Brilliant thinking though to look at material and the desired final result and figure out the process to get there. Well done. K

Thanks Keith. It’s always fun when you figure out a good trick. I’m glad I didn’t solder the rings to each other before using the dapping punches to flare it. The thought crossed my mind, but I’m glad I did it the other way. It was a good experimental project that improved my overall skills. Doing this channel is helping me to grow as a metalsmith. Thanks For the nice comment Keith! Take care.

That’s a really pretty setting and an interesting use of jumprings. I usually use my cone bur to cut seats in prongs, I have a nice long narrow one that’s a bit worn so not as aggressive as a hart bur. I may have said this before but I like the way you work out things as you go….it’s a lot like the way I work……give it a go and see what happens, which CAN be problematic, but can also work out really well lol

Hey Chad, another great video and I'm looking forward to trying this out soon! Something I came up with one day while doing some annealing was to take a refillable paint pen and add some liquid flux to it. I replaced the stock plastic bristles with fireproof cord casing out of some old electronics. It works amazingly well and I've not gone back to my spritzer bottle since. Thanks for all the tips and tricks, felt like sharing one of my own.

If I remember right, I figured out how big I wanted the base ring, cut the length of wire to achieve that size, and then calculated how big the circles needed to be in order to stretch side by side to exactly match that length.
