Indiana here. I have a Bryant. I know someday I want to change it out but so far I haven’t had any of these issues. I do know it’s hard to find breakers for a Bryant which is one of the reasons why someday I want to upgrade the whole panel. Mine does has a main cut off. Not a split bus

Ahh, the lovely memories of dealing with burnt bussing. I would rather deal with a meter can changeout hot due to some of the crazy stuff I had to deal with inside a breaker panel. Firstly, I find them in spaces where there's no business a breaker/fuse panel should even being there. Sigh, the early days of electrification. Fast forward to now is the beginning of the electrification of motor transportation and those old panels are going to be the real "hot topic". I dabble with EVSE installations, mainly Tesla wall connectors due to their design takes majority of the nuances out of the installation. When I come across those old panels, I just have to flat out refuse to do the installation for the buss burnout risk is even greater since those panels are only rated for 100, 125, or maybe 150 amps tops.

Do any panels today use soft aluminum to hold breakers?

@@PoolcleaningdallastxNet No, not that I'm aware of.
