Hello sir, I am about to put in a service to a new "tiny" home. As I do the outside service entrance box, can I put in the whole house surge protection at that outside box? Or do I need to put the protection into the inside main circuit box? I, of course, want protection from outside and inside surges and dont know if by putting it in the service entrance box will give that due to the main incoming breakers for the inside of the house being "inside". It will have a main disconnect in the outside service box and I am going to have several expansion circuits for outside stuff (a grill area, some outdoor lithing and such). Thanks

I would agree with putting an SPD outside near your main disconnect and/or meter. Also, if you have spendy electronics or apiances inside, it wouldn't hurt to have a highly rated surge plug receptacle or surge strip at point of use. Some of that will be driven by your climate. Remember to drive and connect a ground rod.

@@abrelectric Thanks you for your answer - I hae watch a ton of videos and could not find the anwer to that. I still am slightly confused as for protection of my appliances - will the SPD protect those with it being on the outside service box. I hae great rated surge strips for my tv and computers. But cant realy put surge strip on the dish washer or range. That is why I am wanting a whole home surge for those. And the conflicting stuff in reading and watching videos stil is confusing as to where that surge protect box needs to be located. Sorry for addditonal question for clarification. Thanks, Jeff

@@everyoneknowsjeff your whole house spd will provide good protection for your appliances. Whether you put it at the main (type 1) or in the distribution (type 2) in this situation may not make a huge difference in over-all protection. Some of that will be driven on the type of spd you have available.

Question: im sleeving romex for condensing unit at an apartment complex to go from a 6”x6” jbox in 3/4” metal flex, bout 6 feet, going behind a “closet space” that will be sealed up. Is there a certain length my flex has to stick out the back of the wall that will be sealed? My foreman freaked out saying it has to be a foot stickin out but really i fastened the romex to the wall and the flex sticks out roughtly 8-10 inches Idk why he flipped its properly sleeved and supported and secured.

In this situation, my opinion doesn't count :) Do what he wants, but also ask what the code is to require that. In any case, remember the Code is the 'minimum'.
