I'm shocked you didn't mentioned "You're On Your Own Kid". I was listening to it the other day, and the conclusion basically is: boys will pass by, people will pass by, but she'll be ok because she went through a lot of things and survived. Taylor mentions her closest friends and her accomplishments as things that make it all worth it. People assumed that "something they can't take away" was her love for Joe, but it's actually her talent and her resilience.

The first time I heard Bejeweled, I immediately Googled to see if I'd missed a breakup. Shortly after, the news broke.

I still think it’s about Harry Styles, only because the band asks does she have a man and she says I don’t remember since this is a breakup song, however in out of the woods and question she says I remember which is the phrase used to link different Harry styles inspired songs together. So considering how big one direction was when they dated and he was nearly becoming a bigger star than she was as 1989 has not yet been released, bejewelled is about putting herself first, and how many men has she dated that she could call “baby boy” as he was 5 years younger.

Here’s my hot take: Before Joe, very very few of Taylor’s songs expressed a desire for privacy (The Lucky One and I know Places are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head), and once she met him almost ALL her love songs included some aspect of privacy or secrecy. I think Taylor grew to learn that she feels more comfortable in a relationship that’s not as available to the media and her fans, but I think Joe was the one who was really pushing for it when she hadn’t often expressed that desire before. I think she liked the idea of a private relationship, but Joe wanted a private LIFE and Taylor didn’t want and couldn’t have that. She says it clearly in mirrorball, she’ll do anything to keep people looking at her. She keeps reinventing herself and worrying about being stale and nobody will listen to her music, like she expresses in Nothing New which she CHOSE to include on the re-release even though there were many more songs she could have chosen or she could have made the album shorter. So imo that shows that those feelings still ring true with her. In anti-hero she talks about it, she’s insecure and speaks from the perspective of her fans, but she doesn’t wish she wasn’t in the public eye. The entirety of YOYOK is about how she gave up security because she wanted to pursue her dream and be that person that people talk about and make the art that is enjoyed by so many people. She doesn’t want to stay home in the basement, she wants to GO OUT and shimmer like she says in Bejeweled. She doesn’t want the constant criticism of her relationships and she doesn’t want the men she dates to be trapped in that fishbowl with her, but she herself enjoys performing and finds it fulfilling and expresses that constantly. In Long Live, she celebrates how wild the crowds get. In an interview, she said she loves All Too Well and Champagne Problems because they’re sad songs but the fans make it feel like a moment of excitement and connection. In The Man she celebrates her accomplishments and wishes she were MORE successful and says she would be if she didn’t meet those limitations and pushbacks. In. this is why we can’t have nice things, she explicitly says she loved the parties, the being surrounded by people, the exposure. Even in her fiction, take a song like Dorothea and look at it closely. The narrator is reminiscing, do you remember this, I wonder what it would be like, but Dorothea still makes the choice to be in the public eye and flourish there. What happened when they started the relationship? They were firmly in his corner, cut off. Taylor disappear and from the world for that long period of time. Then Reputation came out and critics and people online said they hated it and it was not a publicly successful time for her (except for her die-hard fans, some of which didn’t like the album at first either). Then lover came out and even more people were critical of that, there was even less publicity and even more criticism. She was nowhere near where she had previously been in the public eye. Then the pandemic came and they were alone together for years. She did some re-recordings, which made a splash but also they’re not brand new so it’s STILL not the same level of fame she had in all those previous relationships, still not the same amount of scrutiny. It wasn’t until Midnights was released and a tour was in the works that I think they realized just how massively successful she is and what that really meant for them. It’s great for her, it’s amazing, it makes her happy, but it was never what he wanted. I thought it was odd to describe it as a “love blackout” meaning every other part of her life got pushed aside for him. That’s not sustainable. It’s romantic, but not sustainable. Before, like she says in Willow, she let him “wreck her plans”, but she needs to be able to pursue her dreams and feel fulfilled in her career, she can’t keep putting that part of herself on the back burner to please him. So they can’t both be satisfied by that arrangement, either way one is holding the other back or forcing the other into an uncomfortable situation. It also means a lot of time apart, when they’ve been isolated together for so long. That’s hard on ANY relationship. In the end, she said it herself, and it’s the one question that always stuck in my mind because in all the years she was with Joe it was never resolved. She cries out “I don’t want to keep secrets just to keep you.” That always nagged at me, just a little bit. Because she constantly writes about them keeping secrets between them, but she was so distressed about having to keep their relationship secret that she put it in a song. Also, as I’ve been saying for years, and it’s one of the reasons I love her so much and relate to her songs so much, she has always been plagued with fear and insecurity in her relationships. Even in her relationships, her happiest moments, she’s fearing things will crumble. In my favorite song, she asks “would it be enough if I could never give you peace” and in dancing with our hands tied she says “there was no one in the world who could take it” and in long story short, the peak happy time for her and Joe, she still sings “Past me…” as in, once we break up. It’s not just a Joe thing either. In Wildest dreams she thinks the person is going to break up with her, he hasn’t broken up with her yet, but she writes an entire song about “well, when you do break up with me…” In Begin Again, or The Way I Loved You, she’s having a lovely date with someone but still thinking about all the things that went wrong in the past. She has this mentality of people looking back on the relationship and only appreciating her afterwards. Like in a white horse, in long story short, with the rear view mirror, in the archer, I bet you think about me, the end of ATWTMV, tolerate it. She’s always anticipating the break-up, even in the best parts of the relationship, she’s waiting for the other shoe to drop. “If the shoe fits, walk in it, til your high heels break.” She goes as far as to threaten to leave because she feels under appreciated and she wants that validation (tolerate it, bejeweled, gorgeous, false god). Finally: on the topic of marriage. We all know the recent Taylor’s take on the whole thing. In Midnight Rain she says she doesn’t want to be a bride, she is making her own name. In Anti-Hero, she’s afraid of growing old and having kids. She says herself in Lavender Haze that everyone keeps asking her if she’s going to marry joe, and she seems to be put off by the idea that everyone wants her to get married. Except, she was the FIRST one to bring it up. In Lover, she references classic wedding vows in the bridge. Paper rings she explicitly says “I’d marry you with paper rings”. In Its Nice to Have a Friend she plays literal church bells and talks about “rice on the ground” and carrying her over the threshold which are common wedding things. She brought it up, she seemed to be completely on board. In peace she says “I’d give you my wild, give you a child.” So what put her off that idea? Is it that she doesn’t want to get married? Or is it that he is the wrong person? Or is it that her idea of what a marriage looks like is different to his idea, where he wants to stay local and be private and have children and raise them privately, whereas she wants a committed relationship with a degree of privacy but she also LOVES her lifestyle of being able to go where she wants and make the music she wants and tour the world when she wants, and Joe doesn’t want to be the husband who goes with her and basks in that spotlight. He doesn’t want to be the person who cancels his plans to come to her award show, or gush about her in an interview and how proud he is and how talented she is (which she does for him, but he prefers to say absolutely nothing most of the time because he wants total privacy). Tl;dr - She enjoyed a private relationship, but wanted a public career. He needed a completely private life. Also, even when things are good she is anticipating the end. It’s a self/sabotaging, self-fulfilling prophecy..

Great analysis. I never really realized how much of midnights references Joe in past tense, it’s really telling. Yeah I also think Joe was a form of escapism for Taylor, and they simply grew apart or she didn’t need that anymore. Also she just said in her eras concert last night that right now she’s “the happiest she’s ever been” and that “her life finally makes sense”. Really puts a different spin on how she felt with Joe if she’s saying that now.

I listened to Midnights and to me there is a story of a troubled relationship where a woman feels that her partner has gotten a little too comfortable and uncaring. She still loves him but wants him to wake up so she decides to teach him a lesson. Sometimes that can mean putting a distance between them to create some breathing space.

I was hoping if they took time apart they would eventually get back together but since she was seen with Matty so soon after I don't think that will happen. She just seemed so happy. Reputation is her "Dark era" but it's such a sweet album about her falling for Joe. It has a few revenge songs for Kanye but it's mostly really sweet then ofc Lover. She had a lot of fun that era and was happy. It was a love letter to Joe. Im sad covid canceled Lover Fest but at least we got folklore and evermore. BUT also saying, "Everyone makes a big deal out of it, out of my seeing life as a series of songs. Get used to it." And, " what a mind" can be reverent appreciation, or sarcasm. She is a master of the double entendre.

I have to go back and re-listen to this one a lot I think, because when I first heard it, it definitely came to me differently interpretation wise. I was also one of those lunatic conspiracy theorists that believed that Taylor and Joe actually already have a baby because they had been married since the lover era 🙈🥹😭 this song is the ONLY song that they collaborated with together, it’s just the two of them. When it starts, it sounds like a straight up lullaby, and as a parent that has stayed up well past midnight with an infant it made total sense to be up in the middle of the night with tired eyes. When she first started singing the song, I thought it was a double entendre for her talking about their baby. I definitely romanticized it.

I don’t see how it’s nihilistic? 😂 am I just fully clueless. I thought that “he says what a mind, it happens all the time” meant that he is constantly praising her creativity and intelligence and is finding new things to appreciate about her even long into a relationship. I do see how it’s bittersweet that the world is chaotic and she has to escape it to find solace with him, but I don’t think it’s particularly depressing or reflects poorly on the relationship? Are here other parts that make you think that?

I really connected with Reputation and Lover, because I strongly believe that Joe was her FIRST long term love. This is that first love where you feel so strongly about someone to the point where you almost feel insecure that they might leave you. I felt this so strongly with my first long term love. Some couple don’t always break up, but when they do it’s usually because both grow apart and usually one emotionally neglects the other (Midnights and some songs in Folklore and Evermore show this a lot!). All of her later albums have helped me heal so much, because I felt seen. I wish Taylor so much happiness and healing during this time.

Taylor says it all in her lyrics, and you're on point. I think Taylor and Joe had a lot of issues, and wanted different things. It seems she was paranoid of the ending because she wanted something consistent, probably a fear of a lot of women in their thirties wanting their 'forever person', but having doubts, realising the person isn't right for you and the fear of having to start over again. I think the songs on Midnights suggest they may have actually already broken up during the creation Midnights, even though Joe helped her write some of the songs. But I think she had lingering curiosity about Matty, and there was some feelings and yearning while she was with Joe, which is quite common in long term relationships when you compare the relationship you're in to someone you had something brief with in the past that feels more right.

Besides, women have more luxury of time than men since women on average live longer than men. Meanwhile, if her parental instinct gets active, she can always adopt some kids. Yes. Taylor is a monster talent and a gift to all of us. What she is doing to unite and empower girls and women cannot be underestimated. I have written an epic past life recall novel of divine feminine ( Venice in the 1400s, a Magical palace and Taylor was there ) and I am marketing it now for an epic tv series. I want Taylor to do a soundtrack song and meet her. Our daughter is a massive fan and just saw Taylor in Philly with her best friend. They both said it was the best night of their lives. I do agree on some of the interpretations especially how what they need in 2016 vs 2023 has changed just like the level of fame -you are also spot on about Taylor's insecurities. They don't seem to go away even in Midnights " One day I'll watch as you are leaving." It's a pattern that is reflected even in earlier albums. A few other things : Most songs in Midnights rightfully use the " past tense " as all the songs are her looking back at different years of her life/ past relationships or past stages in her relationship with Joe. So the past tense is apt. Even in Sweet Nothing which sounds like it is set around the pandemic times. Yes Question is the most concerning song in that album . The only way "meteoric strike " could be justified was if the "looking back" theme applied. Otherwise it's a red flag . I feel Mastermind does not contradict but rather complements Invisible String : Invisible String is what brought them together but Mastermind is what it takes to ensure it became an actual relationship.

I 100% agree. We obviously don't know what actually ended Taylor and Joe's relationship, but I do think she missed the excitement and public activity of the 1989 era and her previous relationships, based on how much she's been seen in NYC recently. It must have been difficult for her to balance having such insane success and fame recently, while being with a guy who didn't want anyone to see them.

But the person I was working toward becoming didn’t align with who he was at his core so we had to end it. My current partner is wonderful and I love him. The things I need in a relationship don’t seem stupid/like a bother to him. But if people compared him to my ex most would choose my ex.

Midnights just rubbed me the wrong way the first time I listened to it. The songs didn't fit the 70s aesthetics at all, but mostly, I couldn't believe that someone who was in a 6-year relationship that was supposed to be all sunshines and rainbows would go back to write about old breakups that were more than half a decade old. It started making sense to me after the breakup with Joe. I think he ended it, but since she is the celebrity with the big PR team, she gets to say that it was mutual. "He wanted it comfortable, I wanted that pain"? Yeah, pretty much anyone who's older than 30 and in a long-term relationship will want it comfortable and not be stirring up drama to test the solidity of the relationship all the time.

I'm a Taylor stan but I was always wondering what Joe was thinking about Question?, Bejeweled, etc. Especially bc every relationship before him was with someone just as famous as her. He had to have felt a bit insecure. Who knows? But I mean Taylor was singing about that since Fearless. After watching this video, I'm seeing the whole breakup thing from a less concerned perspective. I've had never interpreted most of the lyrics the way it is explained here, especially those from Midnights hinting at her real feelings about the relationship and pointing to the end of it. Ever since I knew they split up I was in total disbelief and distress about the news but now I feel like I finally understand why it happened, although I still feel sorrowful when I remember they're not together anymore. I comprehend Taylor's need for freedom and excitement (she's a Sagittarius like me ♐) but I believe the main reason for the end of the relationship was Taylor's multiple insecurities and self-fulfilled "my fame's gonna separate us apart" prophecy and that's kinda heartbreaking. I just hope she eventually takes the time to acknowledge the grief phase of the breakup to move on from it in the healthiest way, as well as us Swifties 🙁

When I was hearing Midnights for the first time, I thought about how strange it would be if Taylor wrote about her exes, altough she is in a happy relationship for six years. I saw the theories regarding Midnight rain, but it’s just never felt quite right to me. Taylor Lautner? Tom Hiddleston? Why would she reference it? (It’s a whole different story that she wrote Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve about John Mayer, it even could be a forshadowing of Speak Now.) I guess, there are songs which are about the start of their relationship and others, which are about their breakup. It was combined perfectly that the lyrics of the last category could be recognised as past situations. First, I was sure that Bigger than the whole sky is also one of these, the feeling that you have to let go of someone, but it seems like the hardest thing you’ve ever done, however, the theories around that makes perfect sense to me. I honestly feel sorry for her, because of the hate she gets for her own choices in her personal life. Yes, Matty Healy seems kind of awkward with her and neither they look like soulmates, but I’m happy if she is and we don’t really know what is happening with them - and I would also love a collab. Plus, it’s not really realistic to think that Joe and Taylor broke up recently. The media controls the narrative which we got, but I had a thought, that they might declared their relationship’s ending, so Taylor and Matty could show up together.

Taylor is like a teenager she always wants to feel the big crush running through her body and electricity and excitement. Once things start to settle down it gets boring to her and she feels that she may be forcing herself to be with someone. She never was in such a long relationship so everything was new to her and I guess she wasn’t sure how to handle it. She wants fame and success while Joe wanted a normal relationship and life. I guess Joe thought Taylor would settle down after some years but the truth was that she kept going higher and higher. Causing lots of problems and doubts. I think question is about Jake lol but I will say, I speculate that tolerate it may be about joe secretly. Honestly. I think she resented that he wouldn’t talk about her publicly. She felt that she shouted her love for him from the rooftops and he never did. I think she fantasized about it ending for a while, and I do agree that she had healed and wanted to be public again, and she possibly told him she wanted to step down at first, and maybe just wasn’t self aware enough to know that about herself. I also feel as tho the cheating element really bothered her, she has covered that topic so many times and I think that being the foundation may have struck a cord with her, morally. I also think that Hoax is about Joe and is very telling but I tried to only include songs where Taylor has either explicitly confirmed that it was about Joe, or songs where everyone is in agreement that it's about him because the lyrics are so clear. When I was researching for this, I looked at online discussions on Reddit and Twitter about Hoax and a lot of fans thought it wasn't about Joe, so I didn't want to include it and have a bunch of people arguing about it. I didn't include Midnight Rain for the same reason, although I think that's about Joe too.

But ultimately there will have been factors of their own personal relationship that were the real reason. One or other or both must have fallen out of love. I like a lot of what you bring up in this video, but ultimately I don't really think Midnights is as explicitely about Joe as you say. After hearing about the break up, I definitely went back and relistened to it and the themes you point out stood out much more as relating to Joe. But I also still think a lot of it is reminiscing on past relationships, probably in part due to the struggles she and Joe were facing in the present. I agree with your analysis that Taylor clung to this relationship as an escape from media criticism, but she solely doesn't talk about Joe all in past tense like you say. In Long Story Short she even refers to a "wrong guy" who is a former lover and then talks to a "you" who we can assume to be Joe. I also don't think we should entirely skip over Evermore, even though it's fictional I think it gives a lot of insight into her mental state and the type of problems in her life during the time leading up to the break up. For example in Champagne Problems she talks about "She would've made such a lovely bride What a shame she's fucked in the head" and the concept of rejecting a proposal when you're in love but not ready for marriage due to insecurities and problems with yourself. If she and Joe were fighting about related topics, it makes sense why these themes would show up in her music even in a fictional capacity. Ultimately though I really liked your video! It helped me look at her recent music in a whole new light. Even at face value, the melancholia and sadness and guilt and self blame she expressed throughout Folklore, Evermore, and Midnights give a lot of insight to how she must have been feeling with Joe. Regardless of the fame I'm not sure if dealing with all that guilt would be good for any relationship to prosper. But I'm happy that Taylor is able to keep going and express herself so well through her music so we all have something to relate to and help us overcome our troubles as well. It just sucks she suffers so publicly but that's her choice as well to an extent.

I’m betting that there was some huge fight between them that was based on Taylor’s insecurities and they broke up at least briefly then got back together and thought that they fixed it but one or both of them lost trust due to the nastiness of the fight. And the lack of trust and intimacy slowly broke them apart. Honestly if you go back to the beginning with Gorgeous I think there were bad signs. She always seemed to put Joe on a pedestal like he was a perfect being who was too good for her. She needs to date a guy who she has a deep emotional and mental connection with and not just a guy who is gorgeous and she has great sexual chemistry with. Also it should be someone who has an established career that they are happy with. If I were her I would avoid actors and pop stars.

Hi! Thanks for watching but I personally disagree with you. Taylor met Joe and had seen him a few times while she was still with Calvin (April 29th for example). I definitely think "I got a boyfriend, he's older than us" is a reference to Calvin due to them being long-distance and the club reference since Calvin is a DJ. Similar to the headphones and records references in High Infidelity.

While I loved your analysis, hearing you speak it lends me to believe even more that all these lyrics aren’t really even about Joe. Yes, they ‘could’ be - and why wouldn’t they be - he was her boyfriend, right? BUT… given these recent events and extended deep dives into The 1975’s lyrics and the 10 year friendship of Taylor and Matty… hear me out - what IF… they’ve been each other’s secret muses all this time? They are both lyrical geniuses, share a producer and if you go back and listen with this thought in mind, it will open a WHOLE new dimension into both of them.
