For all you kids out there that were not around in the 70’s, Deep Purple were one of the first hard rock bands to come out of the 60’s. After having made several good albums in 1968 and 1969, they turned it up and came out with the first hard, hard rock album of all time, IN ROCK. Ritchie Blackmore, the guitarist, was the driving force behind the band. He, along with Jon Lord and Ian Paice, were the best in the business on their respective instruments (guitar, keyboards and drums). I saw them many times in concert and they were the most exciting band to watch.

Never clicked so fast! Thanks India, Deep Purple is my favourite band, Glenn Hughes is my fav singer, and California Jam was amazing show! Lead singer- David Coverdale has deep bluesy voice, and backing singer- bassist Glenn Hughes has fantastic high and clear soul voice. And now- he is 68 and still singing like that, i don't know how it could be possible, because Cocerdale lost his voice long ago, great Ian Gillan (another singer in DP) lost his precious voice, but not Glenn. Here- in 1974 he has only 21 years old- the youngest in the band, and amazing leader, singer and bassist!

I love Deep Purple. I've been listening to them since high school ('79 to '83). Blackmore, the guitar player left, for the last time, in '96...I think, and after that I more or less lost interest. They have so many good songs and albums. If your interested on your own you might want to watch the full show of this performance (California Jam 74). The fictional character in the song is a woman who is offspring of a devil. This is the title track of the album Burn which was about two weeks old when this was recorded and it featured a new singer and a new bassist who also did singing parts. The blending of the two voices is awesome. This is the third line up of Deep Purple. Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.

Dig those bell bottoms! After Deep Purple broke up, the lead guitar player, Ritchie Blackmore, formed the band Rainbow, which scored a minor hit with their cover of "Since You've Been Gone." (not the Kelly Clarkson song). I'm guessing that rainbow prop on stage ended up with Blackmore after Deep Purple broke up... As for this song, it's loud, it's fast, it goes all the way to eleven, if you know what I mean. This isn't one of my top Deep Purple cuts. If you've already checked out "Smoke on the Water", check out "Space Truckin'" or "Highway Star" or even "Hush" or "Woman from Tokyo." Fun fact, the original lead singer of Deep Purple, Ian Gillan, sang the role of Jesus in the original recording of Jesus Christ Superstar back in 1970.

Glenn Hughes was the bass player in this Purple line-up and yes, his voice was out of this world... even today I've seen him sing almost like back then, and the guy it's like 70 years old, I don't know exactly... The main singer David Coverdale was phenomenal, I like him better than the previous frontman Ian Gillan, It's a politically incorrect opinion but that's what I think about it. Coverdale, later on, formed Whitesnake.... their first line-up was great, and then Coverdale thought it would be a good idea getting rid of the guys actually playing with him and hired some gorgeous guys instead of the previous ugly ones, and played cheesy hard rock for the masses... ahh, the 80s

Glen Hughes is touring this material worldwide at present. Deep Purple never played the Burn era songs after Tommy Bolin died (he replaced Ritchie Blackmore). Glen can still hit all these notes. Fantastic concert/band. Go see! Caught Purple on the Burn tour in the U.K. 1974. One of my fav ever moments from a gig was hearing Ritchie launching into this riff and seeing the place erupt. If you search on KZbin you can listen to the Burn drum track (studio) isolated from the mix. Just astonishing. At their best, no band was better than Purple IMO. They had it all. Ronnie Dio’s Elf supported them in the U.K. and Purple’s Roger Glover had just produced their album. Ritchie, not one for compliments, apparently came up to Ronnie on the tour and said “ You’re a great singer” then walked away. That probably planted the seed, which became Rainbow a year later. Ritchie jumped ship as Glen and David were taking the band in a funk direction. He felt he could “do something more exiting than Purple”. He replaced all the instrumentalists from Elf for Rainbows second album Rainbow Rising. It recently came second in a greatest album of all time readers poll .... to Led Zeppelin iv. 😀
