@@lupodelupis3672 From the book Dear Boy, The Life of Keith Moon “25 June 1962. The Savages are booked to play at Wembley Town Hall. Local resident Keith Moon was a little disappointed that night to find that Nicky Hopkins and Bernie Watson, as rumoured, had left the Savages to take up a residency with Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers in Hamburg, although Keith couldn't blame them: he would have jumped at the chance himself to get out of London and play in a foreign country. No, what really got his back up was that the new guitarist was even younger than Watson, a Middlesex boy by the name of Ritchie Blackmore whose devastating runs up and down the guitar were leaving people gasping for breath (he was eventually asked to join the Savages from May to October 1962 whilst Watson and Hopkins were in Germany, and Andy Wren was back too). Keith Moon thought he could hear his life ticking away above the noise. He turned back to checking Carlo. All the budding musicians were down the front at a show like this, monitoring the movements, studying for tips. Somehow, despite his own lack of any real musical talent, Sutch always managed to surround himself with the best musicians.

Legend goes that a Rolling Stone writer was interviewing Deep Purple while riding on their tour bus, and he asked them how they wrote their songs. Blackmore, feeling particularly cocky that day, said "Let's show him, boys." And then the band proceeded to write HIGHWAY STAR on the spot!
@weshoward45022 күн бұрын
The way I heard the story is that it took them about 10 minutes to write the song (including Ian ad-libbing lyrics) and then they played it in concert that night. I guess if you have that much talent it's just oozing out at any given moment!

Highway Star is classical music disguised as rock. Remember purchasing this in 1972 their 6th studio album (and there was also 2 live classical albums Concerto for Group and Orchestra 1969 and Gemini Suite 1970) since 1968 and they were in a league of their own…group of skilled musicians that could play any style at any time and give it that unique Purple sound ….and then when they played a tune live …a whole different level that set them apart from their contemporaries. Back in the day we could never decide if they were hard rock, heavy metal or prog or a jam band etc ...turns out they were all and more ...

Roger has stated that to him, Highway Star is the ultimate Deep Purple song. If you listen to those chords that Jon plays during the chorus as I an sings I love it...etc, think of that as a car horn honking)) The guitar solo is one of the few that Ritchie ever worked out before hand (Burn is another). He said he fancied putting a bit of Mozart over it. As to the keyboard solo, Jon based it on a Bach progression (which he demonstrates in the Machine Head documentary DVD). Only he played it at breakneck speed. The guitar solo is often credited as spawning the whole neoclassical movement because of its very classically driven style and construct. Ian's singing on Machine Head is arguably his best ever studio performance. You already listened to Lazy from Made in Japan, yes? Give the studio version a listen. I used to have vanity license plates: HWSTAR
