Got my first machine off Amazon 3 days ago. (JAN 2021) I couldn't afford an expensive detector but I wanted to get started. I got the DR Ötek MT-XR for just over £120. Never used e detector before but done what you said, and went into my back garden to have a bit of fun. Within 30 minutes I got a signal and dug up a Hammered 1200s Edward 1st Groat. I couldn't believe my luck. It really does go to show you don't need an expensive machine to find decent relics.

I done that for my son (7). I put $5.50 nzd in our backyard. I brought a cheap metal detector and we couldn’t find them. A couple of days later I got my money back and brought a decent one minelab vanquish 340. My son found most of the coins in 10mins. The look in his face was priceless 😃

I prefer to wear my headphones around my neck. That way I can hear my signals & be aware of my surroundings especially when I go out solo! Gotta keep an ear out for the bear, wild boar, snakes, etc. Safety first!!

Use a glove. You'll never know if you hold a glass dent, ant, small spider or a scorpion. It will prevent from injuries while metal detecting.

Hi, Dan and Mazzy great video brilliant tips I have had my Garrett Ace 250 detector for a couple of months. I detected in my garden first and the first thing I dug up was a half-crown. I only have a small garden but by the end of my first ever dig I had dug up 3 half crows one old 2 shilling piece a Corgi toy club badge and a lot of nails screws and little bits of metal I was over the moon. Hey Dan, here's a tip from a non metal detector that I saw on a TV show a long time ago. The show was about outlaws from past American history. This guy was metal detecting around a very old tree, one that was old at the time the loot was buried. The outlaws buried their robbery around the base of a big ole tree so they could come back later and fine the money from the robbery. If I remember correctly this guy found a five gallon can of Double Eagles or some other denomination of coin money. W0W, right? No not really, because this guy went back again and found like four or five more five gallon cans of the coin money. Of course, he had to give up the loot because it was illegal to keep it. That guy was a better man than myself because, finders keepers, loosers weepers! I'll be getting my metal detector after this Christmas. I really enjoyed this. Especially his tips on going slow, sweeping, and rechecking. I was in the USMC Reserves and even though I didnt have the good fortune for deploying I did go through the IED spotting detecting and marking course for pre-deployment. The biggest thing they hit on during the practical application course was going slow and 100% and then some. If you don't overlap wherr you just swept you or you team could be dead. If you don't go slow you or your team could be dead (or worse really). If you dont keep parallel and off the deck 2-3" (5-7cm) and parallel without touching you and your team could be dead. If you don't patiently sweep on the left side to find the left outter limit and mark a number of distance left of that, sweep to the right side of the hit/beep to find the right limit and mark right if that, then find the closest point and mark back behind that you or your team could be dead. Same with going back over the area immediately after EOD was done clearing that mark, there could be a secondary trigger and *BOOM*. Also you mentioned 150 Roman coins; if you don't recheck you'll miss 151, 152, 153, etc. I remember reading an article about 10 years ago of someone finding some Roman denaeris in an English farmers field that had been tilled and worked for almost 1500 years since they had been there, the rechecked the holes, found more, found more spots, eventually they found a treasure trove. If I remember correctly the popular theory was that there was a sizable long standing encampment there and a majority of the soldiers would keep their bag of coins buried shallowly beneath their sleeping bag or blankets, while the army general or quartermaster or whoever, kept the bulk of the units funds in a wooden lockbox under the Command tent. When the army got the orders to pack it up and move out it was a quick thing in which most soldiers were too busy to think of picking up their wages for the past how many months that were buried under their blankets and the leader even forgot the strongbox of the unitys funds. Having been in the military, I can totally understand.lol. Over time the leather or cloth purses and the wooden box rotted away leaving just the gold,which doesn't rust and doesn't tarnish or corrode easily. If I remember right it was something in excess of over 1,100 coins total and had a current value of like 12 MILLION dollars or some crazy number like that. But if the person who found them didnt keep rechecking the holes and didn't check the area around the holes they never would have found what is presumed to have been every coin out there. Also making it look like you were never there in the first place was something else hammered into us in the Corps. If you leave the hole or any obvious marker they whoever planted an explosive device there could just plant another one, then next formation if troops sweeping through would be like "oh that's where they found that one the other day", ignore it and *KABOOM*. But covering it up and making it look like you were never there you not only remove rthe marker foe the local bomb planter but also remove the cause for complacency for your allies, thus keeping them alert. Also, the thing about taking all the trash that was come across in the paths (which is a LOT. Apparently trash pickup and dumps isnt a big thing in the sand box, there's no fines for littering, people just throw trash everywhere) was also a big deal because any piece of trash could be a marker for an IED that was placed. By removing the trash by the roadside you remove the possible markers that could be used against you AND make any bits of new rubbish stand out as a possible marker. If you've had any formal training or ever spent time in the sand box in the military I can completely understand your peeves and would say the people you've fallen out with becausw of it can just Jog On or Sod off because they will never understand.

My first metal detecting find was a Victorian era Large Solid Sterling Silver Spoon. Later on the same day I found a Antique Gold & Emerald Ladies ring . Both found in my backyard. At the time I owned a Large Victorian era Home built in the 1860s . I finally sold it due to the expensive upkeep and maintenance costs. But I did find lots of older coins and a few other treasures in my yard while I had the place.

Good tips, though I would say it is possible to walk normally while keeping the coil flat/parallel against the ground, but it requires manipulation of wrist & arm (twisting wrists, adjusting height of arm) and can be quite taxing on the wrists. A bungee strap helps for heavier detectors.

my first year of detecting was with a Garrett ads in the 1970's in a park that i was told was picked over every saturday by a detecting club. it had an old style coil. i managed to find 1 gold class ring and several coins there. the secret was go slow and overlap.i watch others swing the coil like they are going to a fire sale. i have used garrett, deus, minelab,white, and fisher. i now use a garrett 350 for the wife. its easy to use. and for me a minelab equinox 800. have sold all the others including fisher f-75.minelab explorer se ( a very good machine) an e track a deus ( suprise). at 78 years old the minelab equinox works. also no matter what the machine tells you dig it. whats under the big piece of iron ? you may be surprised. indian head pennies ! almost passed them up.

your tip to recheck your hole was spot on. I was digging around Port Gibson MS. this is where the Civil War started. I was on an over look buff and at the end of the bluff I found a hole un covered. first that made me mad because someone dug a hole and didn't cover it. a large pile of dirt was to the side. I rechecked their hole and nothing in it. so I rechecked the dirt that came out of the hole. in that dirt was the nicest Union Officers Infantry Button with the shank still on the back. this just goes to show you need to check the hole and the dirt that comes out of it. thanks dan and your pretty camera lady. I hope you got her some new sunglasses,,,lol

I have been a detestorist for many years now, thought I knew it all but surprise surprise I used your very important tip the last two times in the field and found a gorgeous gold ring on the first day. Went out again a day or so after that and found another gorgeous ring. They are both 12 -14KT gold with beautiful stones, one blue the other red. My wife now has two more beautiful rings. The tip that you spoke of is quite simply SLOW DOWN. Absolutely fascinating results. Who knew. I cannot thank you enough. You have changed my game in the field. This cracked me up! Thanks for adding some humor to this video! I also never knew that about the rain. Very good advice! I have been metal detecting on and off for about 2 1/2 years. I have found rings, none of them gold or silver yet. I have found a cool braclet, a heart diary lock and a piece of its key. That's about it. The rest was just garbage. I will give it another three years and if I still haven't perfected my craft. Then I will only go out once in a full moon. It is very tiring and can get very hot out. Yep! Dan, so very true about what we should expect to find. On my first hunt with detector I found no gold ring, only a modern penny, a shotgun shell and a pull tab. : ) Thanks so much for this info. Like everyone else I always wanted a metal detector so I finally got one to locate an underground power wire I put down about 50 million years ago. To date, making a total fool out of myself. My detector, set to aluminum only (It is an aluminum wire, btw) is finding wires all over the place. Naturally, when I dig there ain't one. Oh well. I'll find it one day. When new at detecting, I set up a 'course' with real coins, jewelry, and trash items (pop tops, can bits, nails, etc) buried at various depths. The game is to detect and guess both depth and item. I found it very informative, and learned my machine quickly. If you try this, it's a good idea to put a plastic marker (I use poker chips) to mark the hole. : )

You are funny! I'm just getting started (Sep 2020) and one of your tips is about the trash. Never thought about that. I am going, right now, to grab a roll of "poo bags" (think dog) and put it in my detector bag so I have something to put found trash in. Thank you for this entertaining and informative video.
