I used to have a huge problem with deer flies. Then I painted my free range chicken's blue. Lo and behold, them chickens love deer flies. In no time, I had no more fly problems!

@@AHandleOnThings I saw something about that. It sounds horrific and scary. 👀 But I also think i clicked and replied on a different fly.... I'm battling horse flies. my dad made something that uses similar principles. It was an exercise ball hung by a net that blew in the wind, making motion to attract them, it was also blue and then they flew up from there to the light above that was a tent fabric funnel leading to an inverted funnel in a peanut butter jar. They flew up through the funnel and could not go back down and he would empty the jar full of horse and deerflies every week or so into his fish pond. Worked like a charm. Movement plus a trap just like yours

Great idea and video. I wonder if you covered some blue balloons with tanglefoot on them and tied them individually to trees would work?

Tanglefoot is Pine Tree Resin thinned with oil (Linseed or Castor). Also, why not paint air mobiles and paint them royal blue? Clean up with Pine resin is oil soluble, so the best way we've found to clean it off of our hands is to rub coconut or olive oil all over any sticky spots. I get coconut oil from Dollar Tree (Black people use it for hair treatment). I get Tanglefoot from Ace Hardware. $9 now in 2023.

I don't think you mentioned it or I missed that part (the why)...but I thought it was interesting you put the cups in motion. I went for a hike this summer and the dear flies were particularly bad. So much so that it was easy to notice that when I stopped to take a break or have a snack, I noticed there were less flies around me. Because of this I assumed they are attracted to motion and not just color. So it was a conundrum...how to continue hiking without moving... :)

Thanks Shane but my husband wont make tht, its work and he puts nothing close to that for the horses we have here. Sanctuary. So on my own, I'll figure smthg out.. do you think the tree root wld work with horse flies? Or any ideas I cld make it work. They are pastured and I keep up w manure but what attracts horse flies? I get so upset when they all are reacting to these flying demons enuf to hurt themselves. Any advice I will follow and thank you much.

Shane-You seem to be the deer fly expert on youtube! I have deer flies in my yard. They seem especially drawn to the cypress trees there. Please give me your thoughts on this. Blue balloons tethered about 6 feet off the ground and coated with Tanglefoot and filled with helium. A little breeze would give them movement. Inexpensive to replace if they pop or deflate. If it's plausible I'd love to see a video of you experimenting with it.(I can't bring myself to wear a blue Solo Cup on top of my head)

@AHandleOnThings3 жыл бұрын
Deerflies are much more attracted to moving targets and although they will hit any color, they seem to target "blue" best. In the peak deerfly season I often put blue buckets with tanglefoot painted on them on the mirrors of my truck and drive slowly up and down my driveway and roads adjacent to my home. It is beyond incredible how many deerflies I catch each trip when I do that. Because deerflies seem to be a "single hatch" per season, this tremendously shortens the amount of time I have to deal with deerflies around the house. I literally catch pounds of deerflies sometimes... pretty gross really. Stay safe and have a great year! -Shane
