If there’s anything to be learned here, it’s the importance of tracking. Let us not focus too much on antler and let us focus more on the responsibility of ending a life and following it through, even if it means contacting the neighbor.

Another thing is practice during the off season to perfect your shot and get you scopes zeroed in so you can have faith in your shot and not have to guess where your going to hit the deer.

usually contacting the neighbor means they will look for the deer for you, if it has a large set of antlers they definitely won't find it. in south central pa most people won't allow you to track an animal because they're afraid to run a buck off of their property for someone else to harvest.

gfg 826 my grandfather told me it’s better to swallow your pride and tell the neighbor rather than to let whatever you’re hunting suffer. It works out well since he gets along well with the surrounding property owners and they usually share whatever they get 😁

Hi bro I like this video awesome I live here in the UK so I can only watch with admiration at american gun channels that 32/40 round don't seem like it a joke its a serious round....I love animals so I get emotionally upset at killing of animal that was walking a few moments before but hey that's hunting I guess I do understand hunting is heavily regulated and I saw you was very concerned about that animal near the deer hide etc so I know you always look for the most humane kill as possible....I want to come to USA just to try my hand at turkey hunting with a shotgun I'd love that I will research n see if its possible closer to home ....in UK our gun laws are savage and I know the shooting freternity here is probably very cliquey I doubt a brown skin person like me would be received well they hire people like me to beat the pheseants but that ain't me bro I'm interested in shooting its one of my passions its a shame that for me I can't experience what the average citizen of USA can easilly experience so don't take your 2nd amendment rights for granted I be seeing how corrupt politicians are trying to mess with your constitutional rights its absolouty shocking. Stay blessed bro awesome video

I took my first deer in Pennsylvania with this same rifle. So did my father and my grandfather. We used to reload our own ammo for it since it was either hard to find or really expensive if you could find it. Sadly, I lost it in a house fire along with several other sentimental guns... I was hoping my children would all take their first deer with the same rifle. Thanks for making these videos!

Well deer are wild animals and humans are screw ups for the most part. The quicker you come to terms with that and accept it, the better your quality of life will become. Anytime you see an animal dead like that, just be thankful you have family land to find dead deer on. Most folks don’t.... I wish our woods were as open as the woods up there.

32-40 is a great old round. It’s mostly a handloaders caliber at this point. I don’t mind having to hand load some of the old school rounds like 32-40, etc. I have a savage model 1899 made in 1909 chambered in 303 savage. I must reload all of my ammo as there is little decent factory ammo available for it. But I don’t mind having to do that. Great video and your truly a great hunter and sportsman.

Bad philosophy involving hunting. Their more worried about getting shots off then they are the quality of their shot placement. Just to get the best possible shot placement on my doe today I waited and watched for 2 hours just to shoot. Of course good shots presented themselves occasionally throughout that entire 2 hours but if I disliked so much as the locations of twigs, sticks, and branches I'd decide not to take the shot. When I did decide to shoot, the doe ran no more then 25 yards and then dropped and died, thats because I watched and waited for the best possible outcome.

My hat is off to you. First and foremost you set the bar for outdoor KZbin channels in my opinion. Secondly I’ve watched all your videos since you’ve been making them. Throughout the years I’ve seen you pass on so many different bucks a lot of people would shoot because of how dedicated you are to deer management and producing big bucks. But the fact you were able to keep your head up and keep hunting after not 1 but 2 horrible discoveries and be able to self film a kill from the ground with no scope shows you are on a level of your own. Hands down this video was the most emotionally involved I’ve ever been while watching anything on KZbin because as an archery hunter for 20 years I could only imagine how upset those 2 bucks going to waste mad you. I’d tell you to stay positive but I know you will... side note Ron from Pittsburgh was my music teacher all throughout elementary. I love your videos man. Congrats on the doe.

My local gun shop has an 1894 in .32-40 I'm looking at, I already have a pair of 1894 Winchesters in .38-55, recently found an 1899 Savage carbine in .30-30 that's one of the nicest shooting guns I've ever owned. Last deer I shot was with a 120 year old Sporterized Swedish Mauser rifle, nice doe at about 100 yards, the deer never took a step. To me there are too many nice old guns out there to hunt with that you don't need a newer gun. I have a Marlin 410 lever action from around 1929 or so, already took that squirrel hunting this year, bagged a nice one, was successful last year too with it along with an old Husqvarna 12 gauge side by side.

I’ve seen people ranting and raving about how bow hunting is disgusting and cruel. This was because they saw a picture of a live doe with an arrow sticking out of its head. Bow hunting is not cruel, that hunter is cruel. Never in my life would I EVER THINK about putting an arrow in a deers skull. In my personal experience, I’ve met more cruel and inhumane rifle hunters than I have bow hunters.

Thats upsetting to see about those bucks... Sorry about that man. I'm from the Scranton area, I personally hate rifle season here because I feel many of hunters aren't very serious or just don't care because they only hunt that season and because of that they feel rushed and take risky shots. I also feel that drives are part of the problem because that's one of the worst and hardest times to put a good shot on a deer. Thats my 2 cents though.

And another thing I want to add around our way like lately all four spots I've been hunting I got about 18 Buck on camera but there's so many more out there that I don't see cuz I catch glimpses of them or I get one picture of a new one here and there and we're not antler Hunter now my Ole Man in his older years he waits on nice ones now but all grown up if it was legal you shot you know I grew up in a days where you went out and shop Five Points and bragged about it all through town but in places like this in PA it's one of them things were once you get an opportunity you got to try to gain from it and grab it by the horns so a lot of shots are made that may or may not be ethical to certain people but yet to another person it might be ethical you know me myself I know a lot of people that won't take a shot and rifle season when a deer is walking away well I got many years to be honest shooting them straight in the ass and they dropped like a sack of potatoes it's messy when you gut them but I can deal with that. I guess what I'm saying is Maybe it was a perfectly ethical shot in that Hunter's mind and it just didn't work out it could have been a rough shot or could have been just standing there broadside one of them things we'll never know

well royer it sucks when you grow em' big for the neighbors to shoot. QDM is pretty much pointless in areas where neighbors are not on board. here in NY it's hard to even see a 3 year old on public land around me. When that is the case it makes you want to take the ones you get an opportunity at and defeats the purpose of QDM. It's truly a blessing to be able to GROW deer and have expensive PROPERTY that your family can hunt. Not everyone has the privilege to pass bucks! let alone even see a buck. I'll never judge someone for shooting a buck of any size if they don't own private land, public land hunters can go their entire lives without seeing a mature buck. We all are so proud that you use such quality deer management on your property, but don't expect the average hunters without deer camps and hunting land to pass anything with legal antlers.

John, Love this video and showing your true passion and feelings on management. I've had the same issue in the past with does being killed and dogs running deer. I'm only working a 100 acre plot, but the doe numbers are back up, I just have to stop the dogs from running deer. Have several nice buck on trail cam and the same dogs chasing the rutting bucks. this creates the hardest object of keeping the deer on the property. I only shoot a buck each year and pass on the does. We are only allowed to shoot a doe in archery or last 2 days of Muzz. Last night was the last day and I watched 10 does feed 50 yards from my stand before getting down. 4-5 of those does were mature enough to breed and I passed to keep populating the area. demonetize or not your videos are the best and keep me coming back to PA for flintlock season.

John...you are a special person, and this video absolutely BLEW ME AWAY! I"m WAY too busy to sit and watch a half-hour video, but I sure did it! Those dead bucks indeed were likely poorly shot, but is there a road nearby, where perhaps the 2nd buck was struck by a vehicle? There was no blood on the animal or the ground, and clearly his death throes weren't super fast. His kicking legs removed all the leaves. Also, regarding dead deer being found near water, it's not so much that they are running downhill - although certainly that can be a factor. Rather, mortally wounded deer instinctively go to water, because the blood loss makes them very thirsty. It's a GREAT recovery tip. If a recovery turns into a massive tracking job, and/or the shot was poor or marginal, one of the best strategies is to back out and return much later or at next light and search the water sources. Oh, and I'm not sure people appreciate what a fantastic shot that was on the doe. You were standing, shooting off-hand, bent and the knees, AND working the camera so you would get the shot! That is CRAZY concentration and execution! Just incredible footage. GREAT, GREAT job!

@@Leatherwoodoutdoors Certainly good points, and of course there's no way to know. However, I have seen deer killed by vehicles that showed no obvious damage. I don't think you turned that buck over, so it's possible there was an entry wound on the other side and no exit would. Not real common, but happens often enough. I feel bad for how much buck wasting goes on up there, and certainly that's an ugly, infuriating situation, but otherwise John it looks like you hunt a deer paradise! The deer are healthy, and there is a poop-load of them!! I hunt in MS, one of the most deer-populated states, but I NEVER see that many deer still hunting/stalking, and you were seeing all that action moving at a decent clip and FILMING IT!! That just amazes me. And - MAN - you spotting that buck bedded down on that ridge face behind that evergreen was *impressive*. Seriously, I hunt exactly like that - been doing it for 35 years - so I know what a challenge stalking is without having to worry about camera angles and getting the shot. I just shake my head at what you do!

Love those old guns. I have a Marlin 1893 in 38-55. still works perfect. Made in 1905 also. Love your video's. Been watching for many years.

Finally got a chance to watch this video! Well done man, I really enjoy these videos with the old rifles! It was definitely hard to watch you find those bucks like that, it has to be depressing for you to find them Year after year when your trying so hard to manage your property... I don’t have anything against guys shooting bucks of that caliber, it just sucks that they made bad shots and the deer went to waste.

Love lever guns, I have a couple, my favorite is my savage 99 in 250-3000 savage, made in 1950. It's an honest rifle that hasn't been molested by bubba. I reload for it and killed a nice 8 point a couple of years ago, my other favorite is a marlin M375 chambered in 375win, they only made 16,000 of em, so it's a keeper, also reload for it. Keep up the good work, and I feel your pain.

Love the octagon barrel! Beautiful rifle. Sorry about the nice bucks I'm a doe killer too. That's because I hunt meat instead of horns (antlers to the OCD people). Does eat better, anyhow. My trophy is on my dinner plate, chicken fried and smothered in onion gravy and marinated mushrooms. Now, THAT'S a meal fit for a king!!

Great video John!! Always enjoy your take on hunting. I feel the same frustrations you do and have had similar incidents on my property. With that in mind, watching the previous Leatherwood video with Boozer, it seems he does exactly what you complain about. There were two shots fired at a nice buck while he was running. At a far distance as well. That is what leads to wounded deer.

I really feel for you brother.. We have almost 200 acres here in spring church and find dead deer every year too...Last year we found two illegal dink bucks left for dead and a big seven point down by our creek..I'm pretty sure the dink's were a "shoot now and count point later" situation since they were both illegal bucks. I haven't had the chance to do a walk around this year yet but am preparing myself for the repeat.

Bittersweet video between finding TWO lost bucks (what a waste) and a quality hunt with a great piece of history. But you nicely presented both aspects of this hunt as usual. Deer management is not easy. I hope your efforts continue to pay dividends for you.

Those people don't know how to track wounded game or what? This is made me mad! In Europe, we never ever leave behind any game like that! We bred and train bloodhounds and we are passionate about tracking. There weren't so bad shots. These bucks all would be founded with a bavarian bloodhound with nearby zero effort! On the other hand! Great video man! I just found your channel and subscribed. Keep it up!

John I really enjoyed your video. I sometime hunt whitetail with vintage lever guns. I have hunted with my Marlin Model 93 in 32 special. It has a 20" octogen barrel produced in 1912. and is quite effective out to 150 yards. I also acquired just a few days ago a vintage Winchester Model 71 in .348 Winchester produced in 1949. The wood was a little beat up and I am currently restoring it with hand rubbed boiled linseed oil. God willing I'll get a chance to hunt with it next season in Potter County PA. Looking forward to more of your video's...Great Job! Tom Z

Man I know the feeling of neighbors shooting deer and then they die in my woods and rot. I find 2-3 younger bucks dead in my land every year... it's an awful feeling knowing the potential a buck could of had if it had another year or two before getting shot, but there really isn't a solution honestly you can't stop people from shooting young deer and you can't stop them from taking bar shots sadly. Hard to see deer be wasted like that but it's sadly how it is sometimes.

A dear friend of mine back home in his native (North Western) South Carolina inherited several "obsolete" caliber rifles and carbines, both Winchesters and Marlins, ranging from .25-20 up to .45-110 from his Grandfather, his Dad, and several uncles since the 1970s. He has taken any number of "eatin' size" and very nice "trophy" bucks and does with those smoke poles. As My Lovely Bride and I are on the verge of moving back home, in just a few days from now, I am looking forward to next deer season in our home state and, if he likes me at all, hunting with either his .32-40, .38-40, or .44-40....Or better yet, his .45-110!!! If you haven't noticed, I really, really enjoy the videos you produce where the above mentioned "obsolete" caliber rifles are featured! Take care and keep the great videos coming!!!! I must, sadly, say that the majority of deer, regardless of sex, age, or size/weight that I have stumbled up on in my life were (back tracking was the method I used) wounded with either arrows or shotguns. The "hunters" apparently felt that the deer they shot at were "clean misses" or the "hunters" were too damn, stinkin' lazy or uneducated, to make the effort to track their deer down. That's my experience and my opinion and I'm stickin' top 'em.

Good stuff, John. I love that you took a vintage gun out for a walk and bagged yourself a fine doe. I feel your pain with finding dead bucks on the property. My group makes best efforts to manage our property as best we can but you can't control the outliers, but it still sucks. As usual - another great installment and I've been waiting patiently all season long for the smoke pole season and your crew coming up. I love those primitive weapon hunts. God bless, brother and I hope you have a most excellent holiday season. Catch ya after Dec 26th.
