I still say John missed his calling. His videoing of the hunts are always first rate. It's interesting everyone is using a flint lock in the early season when any type of muzzleloader is allowed. Due to poor health I didn't get out this year. Hopefully I'll be better by the regular season. Can't wait to see the videos of how the boys do hunting bucks.

Love the germanic jaeger...that looks to be UNBELIEVABLE condition for a gun that's nearly 300 yrs old...I didn't notice even a little pitting in the barrel or lock that you'd generally see in a gun that old. Also he noted that it was a 58 smoothbore...if it truly is that old I would say odds are it was a 55 or 56 caliber that had the rifling shot out of it. Gotta remember these gun barrels were forged out of iron not like the machined steel barrels like they are now...also the rifling was cut very shallow when compared to modern rifling...not discrediting but that could be the reasoning of why it's a smoothbore

You guys got balls rolling in these seasons. I just don’t think I could or would trust myself with that. I am from Illinois so we have actually only been able to use slug guns for my entire life. However they did actually just legalize straightwall rifles so my step dad had a custom 444 marlon barrel custome made for his Thompson center arms muzzle loader. So basically instead of being a muzzle loader it is just a single shot chambered in 444. And those round he got for it look wicked. They have more power at 250 yards than a 44 has at the muzzle. Talk about crazy. It doesn’t officially become legsl until January first so he will be testing it out on that late doe season but next year its open season. That thing is basically an elephant rifle. Sure it is a bit overkill but missing out on the monsters because slugs don’t travel that far is a bummer that is no longer a problem. We can’t uses regular rifles here because of the way our terrain is in certain areas of the state. We do have extremely deep ravines and rolling hills with creeks running all over but some areas are just flat ground that goes on for miles. So it does kind of suck that those certain parts of the state screw up being able to use a rifle for the other part of us. That being said safety is and should always be the #1 priority so it is understandable. Unfortunate but understandable. Wish all of my fellow hunters from all over the US the best of luck this season. I decided that patience is key for me this year. Meat is usually the top priority but I desperately want a monster buck and you will never get one if you shoot the first deer you see every year. So I am willing to wait as long as I have to for a nice one. If the last day rolls around and I don’t see one then I will shoot a doe then.

it does look like it, but the ball hit the ground first. There is something that looks like a hole in the deer, after the shot, but if you go back to the beginning when I am zoomed in on the deer, you'll see that same black spot, that looks like a hole,on the deer. When I zoom out, it disappears. When the deer begins to move after the shot, it appears again, looking like a hole in the deer. at the angle the deer was, I would have taken out the opposite front shoulder or the hind quarter if he would have hit it.
