In all honesty, some of our faves also play a role in the demise of these songwriters. When the Queen Bey is writing herself down as the producer, videographer, songwriter, she’s basically taking publishing from her underlings who are broke and ending up with only the recognition that they’ve worked with her. Which can be nice to tell your family and friends and may get you a Grammy, but it doesn’t always translate into long-term success as a songwriter unless you’ve already got a name, like The Dream. I think everyone in the industry has gotten greedier over time and Tik Tok and KZbin has opened the door for more artists to enter the arena in non traditional ways making the money pot smaller and smaller as the talent pool grows larger and larger.
