When I bought a car from a local Chevy dealer the finance guy was telling me all that could go wrong. I told him i might not buy the car after he said that. I almost walked out. I told him i am not interested in any extra stuff. I didnt need the extended warranty. I saved $2000 on my car deal.

Exactly, what's wrong with this car that I need extra warranty? Are you selling my a POS? Are repairs unreasonably expensive? are you temping me to overextend my finances to the point a repair bill or two would be a disaster?

I guess the pressure wasn't quite so high 30 years ago since we never met the finance guy, but they still tried to "sneak" some of those extra charges in. We had negotiated an out the door price (we thought) and were using the manufacturer's special low rate financing. Fortunately I had my financial calculator with me. When the sales agreement arrived, my wife, who was a lawyer, read the documents and I checked the numbers. The payments were not what I had calculated and we ultimately had to send it back to finance THREE TIMES to remove all of the extras they had larded into the contract. We actually found one more, but it didn't seem worth disputing the $ 29 document filing fee. Document fees have grown since then too, I understand.

Our sons girlfriend is 20 years old, from Ecuador, and speaks broken English. She is taking English classes. Her and her mom (no English) went to North City Honda and got taken to the bank. A used 2020 Honda Civic (29,322 miles) was advertised for $24,895.00 cash price. After the Finance guy got through with her the price was $35,336.38. After the 25.72 % finance charge and 72 payments the cost is $68,910.00. I drafted a letter attempting to cancel the contract under the Illinois 3 day cancelation exception and had her affix her signature. My son and I accompanied her to the dealership and were sternly rebuffed by Manager Vic whom would not give us a card but wrote his name and title on a post-it note and misspelled MANAGER. Needless to say I will be visiting the FTC tomorrow morning 7/17/2023. Unbelievable how these people operate without conscience. 😳

I'm glad you finally mentioned how the toxic dealer atmosphere comes from the top. So much focus is put on the individual salespeople that are the frontline employees the public typically meets. Complaining about salespeople and only salespeople makes sense if they aren't pushed to be that way from on high. At some point, the owners have to be called out. Until the source of all the basic habits faces the blame in the public eye, there will be no driving force to change from within the industry.

As soon as I sit down in the finance office my first line is " you will not upsell anything to me. My financing amount will not exceed what I agreed with from the salesman." it will totally throw them off their game. I never pay more than what I agreed with the salesman on. Including extra fees as those are mentioned as being all included in my original offer. A firm rejection is very important. Don't worry about being rude. Their attempts to steal money are rude.

I wish this video had come out 2 days ago. I just bought myself a new car but was exhausted by the end of the 3+ hour transaction. 1 hr with the sales guy (whom lied to me about pulling my credit) and 2+ hrs with finance (1.5 hrs of which was him trying to sell me warrantees, insurances, and financing). I felt like I had to get nasty just to see a breakdown of the two different "gov taxes and fees" categories that were listed. One of which they took off almost $200 because no way car tabs and registration cost over $300 here. In hindsight, I should have just walked and found somewhere else on principle but I just wanted it over with so I guess they won the sale, but not the products. Lesson learned. Never again, West Hills Autoplex. Thanks for the info all the same, Kev.

Great video Kevin! This one is pretty dang accurate. I’ve seen some really crappy finance managers in my time in the car biz and most of them sounded exactly like this word track. My advice as someone who not only sells cars but on occasion buys them myself is ONLY BUY THINGS THAT YOU SEE VALUE IN. I buy things in the finance office myself but only if it’s worth it and I personally see value in it....because in that moment, I’m a customer myself. Use your judgement, don’t get lost in the sauce, and ALWAYS REMEMBER, you can always come back and buy it later. There’s not a single thing that you can’t take home a brochure, do your research on, and come back and buy later if you so choose.

When they push their warranty garbage on me I let them speak and then I tell them maybe I shouldn’t buy this car, it doesn’t sound like it’s reliable enough for me and then start to get up. Turns out I unknowingly bought every warranty available. At the end he gave me a thumb drive. No paperwork. I asked for my contract. He gave me some of the paperwork. A couple weeks later I was looking it over and it didn't have a breakdown on price. I'm embarrassed to say he added 7,000 on warranty without going over it. So I went back and told them I wanted the whole contract. They played dumb but I wasn't leaving without it. They left 12 pages off originally. Is that legal?

Pay sticker or don't buy. Dealer will sell to another buyer. Trust me. Dealers know all the games that buyers play. Salesmen are taught to not talk. The first one that talks loses. I tried this with a Mazda dealer who had 4 vehicles on the lot and more than 4 customers. If I didn't buy, someone else would. I bought and there was full disclosure; no pressure, no hassle buying experience. That's how we do things in Louisiana. Oh, there was no addendum/bump sticker for Adjusted Market Value.

Hello Kevin, I appreciate your efforts to keep helping people from being ripped off. My only criticism is the customer turn over from the salesperson to the finance person was not shown. As I had incentives for the sales person, the turn over is key to getting the customer to listen to what the finance person has to offer them. Excellent response from the customer but it should not have happened if done right. Also, any finance person who bragged that he just hit a "home run as they say", to anyone, would be fired under my watch. That office should be enjoyable for the customer. However I started research a couple months ago, (which Kevin recommends...taking time to do prior research) that included watching most the videos here, not only once but some of the videos I watched several times cuz I knew they were going to pertain to what I was going to do (paying cash this time, so I really honed in on Kevin Hunter's cash videos). Just to be clear, I really used many of the tactics that are shown in these videos, including the very specific phrases that Kevin tells us to use, or the specific wording to use when you're actually speaking with salespeople or the manager. Yes there's a lot of memorizing going on however, if you stick to it (just like studying for a very serious exam or job!) You will prevail. Much thanks and gratitude to Kevin Hunter and his staff! By the way, I know I saved some good money in this purchase so, I feel it's only appropriate to show them (Kevin Hunter and staff) support by going to their merchandise page! By the way, we need some double x black hoodies! they're out of stock, which I suppose is a good thing LOL.

This was a great video I just found. Definitely got some of that work over by the sales guy last week when considering a used tundra to buy. Haven’t bought it yet but might do it if they drop the price end of year and I’m glad I watched this video just in case

Excellent advise. Just bought a minivan and the interaction with the finance manager bordered on really uncomfortable after telling him numerous times that I would not buy any extended warranty. Ended up not buying any of it but it did take a rather long time and even an additional conversation with his manager...I guess he was under a lot of pressure as I had already negotiated aggressively on the price...

Just bought my 6th new car from the same Toyota dealer. When we went into finance, I told him I haven't bought any extras on the last 5 cars, don't waste my time or yours trying to sell them to me on this one. He said understood and we went right through the paperwork without any hassle.

I just listen then walk out. I’ll walk out several times. Then hit them with my terms cash. Plus red ink thru all their charges. I even ask for half of the commission back or walk out again. I get my way or don’t buy.

A couple of years ago I purchased a Hyundai Sonata Sport with the turbo charged engine. Like the finance guy in the video he tried to sell me an extended warranty on a car with a 100K power train factory warranty. He went so far as to say the turbo charger was not covered under the 100K warranty and when I questioned this he said he was going to ask the service manager for clarification. After a while he came back and said the service manager informed him that the turbo was not covered. At that moment I got up from my chair and told the finance guy I could not buy the car and left. By the time I got home I had numerous telephone messages advising me that the finance guy was mistaken and please come back and complete the transaction. I even called Hyundai and got both a verbal and written confirmation (in addition to the warranty statement in the owner's manual). I bought the car but never saw that finance guy again. Being prepared to get up and walk out is always the best frame of mind to have in any purchase transaction. NEVER FALL IN LOVE WITH INANIMATE OBJECTS YOU THINK YOU MIGHT CONSIDER PURCHSING, THEY WON"T LOVE YOU BACK!

i recently bought a car. i look at it a day before, calculated the sale tax and put in a little extra for their "fee" and made a cashiers check. i presented it to them and that was it. bought it with no extra stuff and got the price slightly lower to match the check.

Me too! I was a single girl in my '20s and is my first time in a dealer with the only intention of looking because I couldn't afford a car at the time. They somehow finagled to get me approved to buy a car. I got sick to my stomach and went to the restroom and cried out to God. I give all glory to Jesus for giving me the boldness to say no. They were so mad they yelled at me and threw me out the dealership.

Bought a Honda 4 years ago. Told the finance manager we were there to sign paperwork and leave with the new car. He started his spiel. I turned around to the salesman and told him that I was going to walk out without the car unless this nonsense stoped immediately. My spouse was humiliated by my response

This is true. The BS I went through to buy my truck was like talking to the wall with the sales manager. I SAID NO I don't want your products, stop trying to sell me junk I don't want or need or me and my money are gone for ever, Do I make my self clear. it was smooth sailing after that. They wanted me to buy extended warranty, etching, life insurance on the loan, This devise they have for rust protection that I would have to bring in once a year for an inspection at my cost $60.00 . Kevin you guys all going to heaven. I will be using your videos on the next vehicle. Canada

What can I do about this? Last week I went to look at cars and the dealer used KBB to estimate my trade in value. Then today i went to another dealer and they did same. Here is where the problem comes in. Last weeks offer was $15,000 and today the other dealer did something that made my car come back at $6,800. I have a 2016 Ford F-150. It was a work truck so many scratches and such, but runs like the day I bought it. Have kept up with the maintenance since day one. Is there some thing other I can do besides not go back to this dealer? I guess I am wondering if what they placed into KBB will come back to haunt me? ANy help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

I just went through this the other day. They really tried to sell their finance even though I was prefinanced and even though they beat my interest rate I would have paid about $1,400!more because there was a rebate I wouldn’t have gotten. When I brought that up he quickly jumped to selling me the extended warranty. After listening to him I audibly laughed and said no thanks, look that company makes money betting my car will not break. They make more in a day than I make in a month because the house wins most of the time. I’m betting with the house!
