I used to work at a Toyota dealership as a Salesman and you’re completely right but you have to take one thing into consideration right now if you get a car for MSRP you’re getting a good deal since most of the cars are being marked up more than 5k, and if they’re giving you MSRP there would be fees that cannot be negotiated like the Proc/Doc Fee, registration (unless you’re out of state and are buying a car with cash), and taxes. So if you’re expecting to pay less than MSRP you’re going to have a rough time finding a good deal. What I would recommend is that y’all hide the fact that y’all are going to have a trade in and money down until the end of the process and have in mind how much money y’all want to get for y’all’s vehicle

Great info Ruber! Definitely agree about hiding your trade in and money down till the end. It is hard to find a car for under MSRP… but we may or may not have just bought a 392 Wrangler for 10% UNDER MSRP. You just got to know what triggers to pull to get deals. Always be willing to work a deal and buy the best value… and you should be good! Curious. What was the most popular car you sold at your dealership?

The best part about walking away is sometimes it forces them to show THEIR hand. I was looking at a used 2019 GTI Rabbit in Cornflower Blue and they kept asking what my monthly payment was that I was looking for. I wouldn't give them an exact number and just asked them what they could do for me. They tried offering me 13% at 72 months, then 10% at 84 months, and they kept saying that's as good as it's gonna get as I try to haggle with them. My fiancé and I leave, we get 30 minutes away to stop for lunch before driving another 1 1/2 hours home and we get a phone call. "We just got a financing offer in and they're willing to give you 3.75% at your 72 month term you were looking for." Got enough for my trade to break even on my current loan and got the car for the middle range of KBB value. Haven't seen another CFB Rabbit pop up in a 250 mile radius since.

My last trick was calling a dealership that I had intended on buying a car from. Instead of asking for the SUV I was looking for, I was looking for my trade. I love to find a white solara with a V6 and a moon roof with low miles. My budget was $12k or $250/mon. I knew this exact car was no where on their lot or in their dealer network. I called a few times to see if they found the car. They had not. The following day I drove in my trade and they were happy to give me $8k towards my SUV. After buying it, they call me back (I’ve been using my company phone this whole time) to say they found the Solara I’ve been looking for. I told them I was able to find one for $8k in my hometown.

As a former salesman I’m so happy I can say I’ve never used the 4 square method. I never tried to manipulate people with number on that paper. Didn’t feel right. In the 13 months I was there, I was top salesman 6 of those months and never once looked at a 4 square
@scottr2706

As a former car sales person you know the customer is actually negotiating with the sales manager. Unless, of course, that customer is a lay down. The sales person is just a middleman between the customer and the sales manager. The smart car buyer uses the sales person as a tool. IMHO, any car deal that does not involve the sales manager is a bad deal for the customer. You also know every sales manager uses the four square. These days it is rare for the dealer to present the sales offer on an actual four square sheet of paper. But the sales manager always views the dealer as three parts: price, trade, and financing. Any offer from the sales manager will be based on the net of these three parts.

Back several years ago, I went to a VW dealer. I had been a VW customer for almost 20 years at that point. I was looking to get a diesel Touareg lease, but the numbers the finance guy came back with was higher than it would've been for a purchase over the same term. I told him numerous times to "check the math", and that they likely just missed a checkbox somewhere. After being there for a couple hours, I left. The following morning, I went to an Audi dealer, explained exactly what I wanted to a sales guy, who directed me to a Q5 TDI, and I was driving home within an hour. The "willingness to leave" is the most important card you can play. A point you brought up, but feel it needs more emphasis. They don't make any real profit on the cars, they make it on add-ons and financing. The minute you're prepared to leave the table, they know you won't be back. The ones that can't wield this over them, likely have less than ideal credit. If you come to the table with cash, or at least credit from elsewhere, they don't have many avenues to squeeze money out of you.

So I have been able to beat the dealerships a few times. For my Pilot, I found out that they mistakenly marked it off $9000 online because they had an identical base model on the lot. Once they showed their cards, I showed them mine. I had a calculator on me to show them where they moved the numbers and even wrote it on that paper. I got my trade in in writing and had them compete with my credit union (which I never had) for the loan. In the end, I got a 3 yr old Pilot for $7k less even after paying it off. My last bit of advice was never be afraid to walk away.

From my own experience, I placed an order for the brand new 2015 frs RS1. Just negotiated for free all weather mats and car cover. Put down deposit for the full msrp price of the car. A week later, they told me the car is in another province and will need to trailer to my current dealership and that will cost additional $500 and that’s gonna be my cost. I told them, heck no, I am already paying for the destination fees and stuff. I would be happy to take my deposit back and walk away. The sales man said he will call me back. Which he did and said they will cover the cost for the delivery. Something like this is totally ridiculous, and like brad said, these dealership will do anything to squeeze every dollar out of you. Also when you do finance a car, take a close look at “cost of borrowing” for luxury car brands, it could cost up to thousands of dollars

Been hood winked before by dealerships, now I go with friends to help them from being taken to the cleaners, those sales people aren't thrilled when they can't play the mental games... but in todays' car market where a three year used car with miles are selling for more than new I didn't take the chance of arguing for a lower msrp

Well the easy way to do it is ask a salesman what is the cash price is. Then he's trying to get you in to his office so he will give you a low number ask him if he will give that in writing. Now if he says yes then tell him to PDF it to you. Then go to your bank where you going to get the loan for about 4% instead of 9 to 11% at the dealership. Now you've got them by the balls cause you got it in writing. So they can't back out cause of a law suit. This is how I got my 2018 Chevy Silverado 1500 of cours the salesman got fired and so on but they won't scam you. They want to play dirty you need to learn how too play dirty. 😆

Like the vid. Yeah, I know it's usually best to get a used car not from a dealership. There was a circumstance in which I was too intimidated not to look at a used car dealership when I was in San Diego temporarily for work and due to come back home to Bremerton, WA in a month. My own personal car, a 2012 Mustang got totally in a wreck caused by a negligent driver. And I needed to get another personal vehicle to get me home. I spent 4 weeks looking for something. Because I was over 1,000 miles from home, I was too intimidated to try private parties much because many were over 30 miles from San Diego and there was the obstacle of getting a ride up to where the car would be. So, settled for a used car dealership in S.D. with another car that got my eye, a 2007 Chevy HHR with a 5-speed manual transmission and 94K miles on it. I bought that car because it had a stick and folding down rear seats so that I could transport more items home. But because of where I was and knowing how the HHR is obviously not the #1 best car in the world, I was too chicken not to pay a little extra for 1 of the dealership's warranties. Also, automatics are car more common on HHRs and can be easily more problematic. I did refuse to take any monthly payment or finance plans and chose to negotiate a 1-time payment to take the car off their inventory. I didn't want to pay interest nor a finance fee. I see how right you are, Brad, about avoiding used car dealerships. Iwas just under some rather adverse circumstances that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy, not that I really care at all about my worst enemy. I feel I got a better deal than I could've, if I didn't negotiate the price to what I did, but still could've possibly overspent for the same car just by a margin. But again, I was under the circumstances that I was under. And I did get a good reliable car that got me home. And even though I got a replacement Mustang within 2 weeks after returning home, I still waited 6 months before selling the HHR. And I joined a couple HHR Fan Clubs on Facebook, since no regrets. Another than having to decide between that car and the Mustang, I kick myself for selling it. BUT, I took my time doing it.

I bought a used VW off of an Audi lot and told them what I wanted to pay for it out the door and that I was considering financing. I knew that old VW was taking up space on their tiny lot where they rather put a luxury car. Their mistake was when I asked them how they were breaking down the costs. Yes their screen was showing the break down but it also showed what they gave the guy before me as a trade. I added $500 to that amount and worked from there. In the end I got a great car that at a VW dealership would have been easily $5k more.

Brad did mention "Out the door price" but he didn't mention this also helps against the dealership trying to sell highly marked up add-ons or additional warranty during signing and paperwork. Also, it's pretty rare now but NEVER sign paperwork without an interest rate locked in. Yes, sometimes financing can't get approved during signing but 90% of the time it will. Once you sign you're locked in even if they come back and say financing wasn't able to do what the dealership thought and now you have a much higher interest rate. Way back in the day dealerships used to purposely do this to get a higher interest rate but it's not very common now because it's scummy!

I was going to buy my first car about a month ago, key word was. It was a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta with like 89,000 miles on it and it was in great condition. The dealership wanted $8500 for it, So I was like yea let’s do it. So my parents put a deposit down on the car and they were supposed to move it to a dealer closer to home for us to look at it, we did indeed plan on buying it. But they never ended up delivering it because they sold it to someone else despite our deposit. My parents were very pissed off and they did end up refunding our deposit and they claimed that the “missed a manager in an email”. Still upset and still looking for another car. 😪 wish me luck

I bought a truck with a big dent and they repaired it: Somewhere between me looking at it and them prepping it, it got dented. When I picked up the car it was already late and dark so I jumped in the car without doing another walk through. Went home, next morning saw a dent in the morning sun. Sent them pics and they fixed it.

I thought I was well versed in the 4 square game and knew where all my numbers should be but still fell victim. I sold an Acura to Carvana and found the replacement at an Acura dealership. I negotiated the out of the door price over the phone and had finance rates from my local credit union. I wanted to finance again through Acura finance and assumed they would match the rate I had from the credit union. Even though my credit score was 800+, they charged me a full percentage point higher on the interest rate. It was at that point I learned dealers make most of their money on the finance side rather than the car selling side. I refinanced the loan 2 weeks later and was able to get back to the interest rate I wanted.

Usually the sales man doesn’t know the interest rate, that is done in the finance box. Instead of telling you ($350.00 mo @ 4%) they will give you a range ($350.00 - $375.00) that gives wiggle room to sell you extended warranty, gap, paint protection, maintenance package etc.

In the UK an 'on the road' price has to be shown for any car, new or second hand. For a new car this includes any and all taxes and fees so you know what you will pay. A former work colleague was extolling the virtues of a PCP they had been offered opposed to a loan or outright purchase, they thought it was wonderful to have a low deposit, low monthly payments and the option to trade in or purchase the car after 3 years. I ghad a look at the figures and they would have been paying about 10% over list to keep the car and if they handed it back then it would have to be pristine or the 'guarenteed' trade in value would rapidly fall. Two rules when buying a new vehicle: 1 - any "offers" are in the interest of the seller not the buyer 2 - saving up and buying outright is cheaper in the long run

I speak from experience when I say don't buy from a dealership. I tried 3 dealerships and none would sell me a car. Not even the most used car on their lot. Wouldn't talk to me without credit. I was 23 with a stable job I had at that time for quite a while, hardly any bills, etc...so I had to go to a place called Car-Mart. Didn't know much about buying a car. Just knew that I saw this okay looking 2009 Mazda 6 S with over 100k miles. I got paid weekly so I told them I could pay weekly. They wanted almost 15k for the car (over double what it was worth), no negotiations. I took it because I couldn't afford to pay cash for a usable vehicle (only had like 400 and wasn't in a spot to be able to save more because I couldn't make it to every shift because I didn't have a car anymore) so I said okay fuck it. They have me at 16% apr and I pay like $109 a week. On paper it's $472 monthly. For a 2009 with over 100k miles but would be paid off in 2 years. Nobody else would sell me a car so I had to take it. Couldn't afford a prepurchase inspection and I highly doubt they would've allowed it. So here I am, 5 months later, still owe a lot more than I should, electrical problems, engine problems, snapped sway bars, 2 patched tires, no dome lights (the dome light plastic cracked in half and fell randomly one day while I was driving and they admitted they knew it was like that and didn't tell me). They offered to help me get brake pads and sway bars for cheap but they weren't. And they added on extra shit I didn't want (new calipers, they said they were pretty much no cost because I got the brake pads) they even worked out a payment plan with me for the parts. I was only able to get the cheaper parts and payment plan if I used their preferred mechanic. Turns out he's a ripoff artist and tried charging me $100 to change my brake pads. Ended up getting them done for $40 and I had to bitch at carmart to be able to even get the brake pads from their mechanic and when I got there to get them, he said I couldn't do that until one of the workers at carmart who happened to be in the mechanic shop at the time said that carmart said I could get them. So he huffed and puffed and then just pointed at them and said "There". He had previously said the sway bars would be like $250 just for labor. I don't even want to go back and ask for the sway bars and I'm for sure not paying $250 for something I could have someone else do for $75-$100. Do. Not. Go. To. A. Dealership. If you do, DO NOT go to Car-Mart. Just buy some shitty $400 car and rough it out. Shit is nothing but a scam. I'm now going to have to sell the car (probably will only get $4k in the condition it's in) and continue to pay it off until the loan is done. I can't afford the maintenance and Car-Mart tricks you by saying they cover this list of parts but by the time any of THOSE parts go out, you're already overwhelmed with 10 other parts or problems with the car. Absolutely horrible experience and I'll never go to any dealership ever again because of what has happened and the fact all the other dealerships pushed me away even with proof of my stable job (lots of pay stubs) and I lived in a house my mom had bought so rent was pretty much whatever I was able to give my mom that I had extra (she never really worried about it, think she was mainly trying to make sure I was responsible enough to even own a car).

When I looked over the paper work once I realized my transmission was limping I had a $26,380 all together I had payed for the car out the door with the loan. I made a big boo boo I just sold it for 12500 5 months later it was a huge lesson.

SHOP YOUR TRADE AROUND. ONE DEALERSHIP WILL WANT IT MORE AND PAY MORE. SOMETIMES A LOT MORE. Never finance a car you cant afford. IE. 7 or 8 year loans are for fools. If you cant afford to pay it off in 5. You can't afford it. Get a better job. NEVER NEGOTIATE A PAYMENT. ALSO FOR FOOLS. ALWAYS NEGOTIATE THE SELL PRICE OR THE DIFFERENCE IF THERE IS A TRADE. ALWAYS. That's it. And above all. Never go to buy a vehicle today. Always start a month in advance. Because a dealership will negotiate against themselves if you just give them time to stew on a "sure sale". Salesmen are greedy..lol. Just drag out the process and you will come out ahead. OH..NEVER BE BRAND LOYAL. ALSO FOR FOOLS WHO BUY MERCH. btw. driving 3 or 4 year old good vehicles will let you retire 5 years earlier if you invest what you save.

Went with a friend to buy a new 2020 Honda Fit when he had crashed his 2010 Fit. I know the Fit is a low margin vehicle so they do their best to jack up the price. One item I noticed was some "protection package". I asked them to show mw what the protection was. Some stupid stick on crap that probably cost them $30 dollars or less. Their price, $400. I said no way and even though it was still overpriced, I agreed to half that amount (knowing the low profit margin on the vehicle). Then, even though we were paying cash for the new vehicle, they herd you into the finance office. There, the person wouldn't take NO for an answer as she tried unsuccessfully to get us to buy an extended warranty from some third party firm (which I looked up later and had terrible ratings for not fixing hardly anything). Three times I said NO until I finally emphatically told her NO. So, no extended warranty, no other add-ons and we drove off the lot with a new vehicle.

I realize watching this video that the last person who sold me my used car scammed me. He "ran numbers" and told me that, because I was deadset on not paying a cent over $250 a month, he was able to find me financing that would get my monthly payments cheaper than what my bank could offer (I was going to go through them like with my previous car). These dealers are so shady. Car dealers and mortgage brokers.

Like 90% if this is out the window right now since demand is way out pacing supply. The only bargaining chip a new buyer has these days is having a good 2-3 year old car to trade in. Cars under MSRP are basically non-existent. Many dealerships won’t even let you pay cash or secure your own financing. The dealerships hold all the cards right now until late 2023 at the latest. One thing you didn’t mention is finding out what the buy rate on the loan is. Often the bank will give the dealership a 3% APR and the dealer will turn around and say it’s 4-5% which means they will just bank that extra 1-2% for the life of the loan.

Then they told us we could do a 2022 challenger. The challenger is around $31.5k. They put us on a monthly payment plan of $897!!!! for 75 MONTHS!!!!! That ends up being $66k !!! When asked they said its the interest! Double the car for interest!!! What am I missing here other than that's completely INSANE! What would yall do in this situation? HERE'S A GREAT DEAL I NEGOTIATED, KINDA...In May '99, I paid $19,500 for a loaded '97 Pontiac Formula w/27k mi. on it. When I totaled it 7mos later after throwin' it into a tree @140mph on New Yrs Eve, a totaled Formula w/44k mi brought me $18,700, b/c when you total a car the ins. co. gives you full retail value, not RESALE value. Therefore, I spent $800 or roughly $100/mo. for a fully loaded V8 Formula. I think that qualifies as a good deal.

Earlier this month went to a Toyota dealership to get the new Corolla cross for my wife. MSRP 24,000. They tried and swindle me and used the chip shortage excuse to mark a new car at 34,799. I told the finance manager not happening ! It’s a Toyota and it was an all cash purchase. He went to his “manager” to ask if the can remove the “market value price” it’s some nonsense they added for not having the car in stock cause of the chip shortage. I told my wife get ready to leave cause all they going to do is come back with 30,500 counter and the car at best should be 28-29k. Sure enough they came with 30,800. Surprise, surprise I told them not worth it and I will just go to Mazda who already had stated they weren’t marking up their cars I would just have to wait 3 weeks instead of the 52 days Toyota gave me. Went to Mazda got a 2022 cx-5 with more features than the corolla cross for 30,299 out the door.
