With Titles like 11 Fake Fees, to Don't Say I'm Paying Cash at Car dealerships, and Car Shortage Crisis, and Car Dealer Says Bring the Car Back!... The Homework Guy Team publishes videos to help Car Buyers. Then we added Cash Buyer Negotiations, and Held Hostage at a Car Dealership, No Haggle One Price Car Dealerships, How Much do Used Car Dealers Pay for Cars?, 10 Things You Should Not Say to Car dealerships, and the Costco Auto Program. We hit all the topics, and we represent Car Buyers, a goal that’s often in direct conflict with Car Dealer goals.
A CAR DEALER WANTS TO:
1. SELL every car for the Highest Possible Price.
2. CONVINCE Car Buyers to use Dealer affiliated Lenders / Banks.
3. LOAD every Car Deal full of Fees and Finance Products.
4. OFFER Lowball numbers on every Trade Vehicle.
THE HOMEWORK GUY TEAM (THG) HELPS CAR BUYERS TO:
1. BUY a Car from Dealers or Private Party Sellers at the Lowest Price.
2. PAY Cash or Finance with their own Bank or Credit Union.
3. DECLINE Dealer Fees and Finance Products.
4. TRADE / SELL their current vehicle for the Best Value.
For more than 40 years, dealerships have EARNED their lowly reputation by being the masters of predatory selling. Dealers stalk victims relentlessly, often ruthlessly treating the most vulnerable car buyers (like seniors, for example) with little or no conscience. Car Dealers and their Finance Officers have no problem creating financial devastation for their customers with over bloated car loans, and quite often do. We point out the traps and the flaws of the process, and help car buyers get by all the nonsense without being ripped off. We promote fairness, honesty, and transparency, and we’d love to see a few dealers join our mission!
The Homework Guy Team provides car buying consumers with information, automotive news and updates, industry outlook, buying and selling advice, and other help to level the tables. The public face of THG is Kevin Hunter and the master negotiator, Amazing Elizabeth. Tons of time and research goes into every show, with several projects always on the table, all with the goal of getting it exactly right. From Automotive News Updates to vehicle shopping advice and assistance, The Homework Guy Team is the best there is.
THG CATEGORIES: cars, truck, van, suv, auto, new cars, used cars, autos, mechanics, automobile, vehicle, dealer, automotive news, auto shop, service plans, extended warranty.

I literally just got back from the dealership. It’s a jungle out there. There are barely any cars on the lot. I experienced this today. The asked for the OTD price before i even stepped on the lot and of course they gave me the run around and I see why now. First the car wasn’t even delivered to the lot and they wanted a deposit to “hold” the car. I did understand that because there’s barely any inventory. Then he finally wrote up the Deal😂😳. Approx $3k in Addon but he didn’t call them that lol he said it was accessories that had to be put on the car. I was shocked. I told the salesman well if the car isn’t even delivered yet don’t add the accessories as I don’t wAnt or need Poly Steel, Red alert, nitrogen, and a bunch of other bull they added. Like wtf is red alert 😩. It was just all bad. I laughed at him and left. He didn’t care because someone who don’t know any better will pay $25k for a Kia Forte just not me😂😂😂

I sold cars for a couple years. Not aggressive so I never really considered it as a long term job. There’s a lot of pressure to get everyone you contact sold and it’s not just about money, it’s about just keeping your job. I have a little sympathy for some salesmen because if they don’t sell you, their boss thinks the salesman is costing them opportunities, costing them money. I saw decent moral people turn into snakes salesmen. Strangely enough my non pressure sales personality gave me a bit of a client base that was annoyed by boisterous aggressive and I did well with it but I just tired of the environment. The tipping point was trickery like addendums and garbage service plans being sold in Fand I office.

I bought a new truck a couple months ago and immediately told them that I wouldn't pay for any of that stuff. It was instantly gone. Even in this seller's market it vanished. I figured that the salesman stood the most to lose if he didn't make the sale. I could just walk away and buy elsewhere; the dealership could have sold the truck to the next guy, but the salesman would have likely lost the sale (unless he was the lucky one that sold it to the next guy). So I left it up the him, and he took it off the price instantly.

I bought a used 1987 car at a dealer in Nov of 1994. At the time one of the big dealer add-ons was the all glass etching. The car I bought missed the etching for some reason. I looked over the contract & they charged me for it; $250.00. I went back to question it & they told me "Oh let get it done" I said no just give me a refund. "But, but, but..." I said NO I DON'T WANT IT! They sent me a check for $250.00. After getting the check, I did more math. I found there was a portion of sales tax on this product. They still owed me 21 or so dollars so, I went back a second time to request the sales tax money I was owed. The F&I guy was pissed & made a comment "This deal has been just awful"....I'm thinking why is it my fault that it's awful since you guys weren't honest with me in the first place. Also, I think those kits were about $40.00 at the time & you could buy them at Pep Boys.

To avoid the dealership finance manager and all the addons, you can purchase the car on the phone. Once you have the agreed price with no add ons, dock fee and any other garbage the finance manager adds on, then have them prepare the paperwork and FedEx it to you to sign. You will have the chance then to examine the documents to make sure nothing extra is added. Saves time and aggravation.

As an insurance agent that works exclusively for a name brand isurance company, I get the customers on my line all the time expecting some huge discount for either, vin etching, lojack, and also the pre-collision braking features that a lot of new cars have now-a-days. Dealers push these items as a selling point to car buyers, and it makes my job harder when I have to tell my customer that all of these extra items there being "sold" doesn't add any additional discount than the traditional air bags, abs, or anti-theft discount would already be on a policy. All of those things they try to sell you on fall under one of those 3 categories. Those categories are 1. any collision mitigation/prevention system(abs, brake assist(such as subaru's eye sight feature), etc..), 2. restraint device(air bags or automatic seatbelts), and 3. anti-theft devices(active or passive alarms, lojack/vehicle location or recovery system, vin etching, etc.) You guys are on the money about the "what portion of the policy" does the discount apply to also. A collision prevention system specifically discounts the collision coverage on the policy. Anti-theft discount is usually 3-5 percent disount on the comprehensive coverage because that's the coverage that covers theft. Finally, restraint devices discount the PIP(personal injury protection) or medical payments coverage, which may not be on some policies because it's not required in all states.

ADM literally means Additional Dealer Mark-up. There are only two reasons to pay them. 1: You're buying a "package" car. (that's what we called them). This is like your Southern Comfort truck that was literally sent to a custom shop, given a premium paint job, lift kit, bed cover, running boards, brush guard, wench, etc. 2. It's an allocation car. Sorry, but when you want one of 500 Ford GTs or one of a few thousand Corvette ZR-1s or grand sports, or even just a car in extremely high demand like the Kia Telluride was recently, you will be paying above sticker because if you don't want to there's a list of people who will.

Stain blocker on the interior $12 What did Nissan want? $3800! For a full sized spare tire that was NOT part of the fluff? $429 with a tire!!!!! I went to a salvage dealer in used car rims, $79 mounted & balanced with a good used tire!

I have basically adopted the tactic, that in the very beginning after meeting someone from a dealership I ask them a couple of questions. 1: Do you get paid to service a customers needs? 2: Can you service a customers needs without listening to the customer? 3: If I have to tell you No more than once, you are not listening to me, and I am not your customer. I then walk out. Saves me the time and stress to my blood pressure from the hassle.

Ed Napleton Honda, St. Peters Missouri. About 8 years ago. I went in to buy an Odyssey. There was a BIG list of shit on the side sticker. I told the salesman "I'M NOT PAYING FOR ANY OF THAT." His response? "YES YOU ARE." I laughed, and left, and went to Frank Leta Honda, and purchased my new Odyssey the next day. I THEN called the original dealership, and spoke to the sales manager, and told him what his salesman said. His response?? "OOF!" He then told me that he would check to make sure I DID purchase a Honda. Heh heh heh. Go for it.

How is Kahu different than the apps that the manufacturer offer that give you vehicle location, status and remote capabilities???? I always get the top of the line tint installed for less than $250. The last time I had wheel locks was in the 90s and it was stupid. Maybe if you live in New York City, but in 90% of rural America I think it is ridiculous. We trade our vehicles every 3-4 years. So many of the salesmen just can't stop trying to deal. I always tell them that my time is valuable and I am willing to pay "X" amount and throw in $500 bucks for them if they make it fast. About 75% of the salesmen would still try and screw us around and take hours. I finally found a dealership that knew a good customer and now we get things worked out online and just drop by and in 30 minutes we are on our way with the new vehicle.
