The 'tiny gerbil' is named Boo. He's actually a miniature giant space hamster, and the ranger companion to Minsc, a ranger friend you can have. As for the squid shit and dragons, the squid people are called Illithids, or mind flayers, if you prefer. Basically psychic alien like creatures that reproduce via a parasitic tadpole that latches into your brain via usually occular insertion. The dragons are rode by a species called the Gith, specifically Githyanki, a former slave species that broke free from the illithid empire. Their first leader, named Gith, made a pact with the dragon goddess named Tiamat. So the Gith are given red dragons. Whether they're 'good' or not is kind of perspective. Regardless, the Githyanki spend most of their time hunting down the illithids. Oh and the Drow elf lady that saves you, that's a secret.

One key distinction for Boo, which I think Mercer flubbed, is that he isn't a giant miniature space hampster, but instead a miniature giant space hampster. And for lore not covered in BG3, the miniaturization of a giant space hampster makes it very smart and also telepathic. Minsc seems bonkers (which he is) talking to this itty bitty animal in full conversation, but he's the only one attuned to it. I fuckin' love the BG universe!

One of the best crpg’s ever. The nuances of even some of the little things in interactions change depending on the class, race, sub race, sib class, background, etc. So, even though you’ll interact with many of the same places and people, each play through feels unique depending on what you choose to play and how you choose to play. That’s not easy to do. But it’s definitely what a dungeon and dragons game should offer.

i think you two should play this one, on your own time even if you dont want to make it into content. its a super good couple co-op, relaxing, you can take your time if you want, and very thought provoking. i like having note books for these kinds of games.
@Fairburne69
@Fairburne69 Жыл бұрын
If you do play it I highly recommend two things. 1. One of you maybe even both of you should play with a high charismatic character. It will make the dialogue feel better until you get used to failing and realizing its not always bad, just different. 2. Take your time when it comes to answering the questions. It is crazy how impactful the decisions you make become. Especially when you leave the first act. Most conversations are important so don't rush it take your time. Finally and this is just a suggestion. You can do whatever you want. Which is part of the beauty of the game. However, I would recommend not save scumming. In a story the heroes falter sometimes. Fail at parts of the quest even if they succeed in the end. This game was designed for failure. It may not go the way you expect and that is part of the fun. It is also my reason for points 1 and 2. If you have a character who is really good at persuasion, deception and intimidation you will not fail in dialogue too often. And if you take time in making your decisions you are less likely to regret them as you play. Ultimate just play and have fun. I'm 50 and I've been playing RPG's my entire life since Tunnels of Doom on a Texas Instruments computer. This is the best RPG I have ever played hands down, its not even close. For me at least.

First thing first: don't worry about the "gerbil", that is Boo, a mini giant space hamster and he and his partner, the human ranger Minsc, are some of the most beloved NPCs ever, they won't touch them. The squid headed thingies are Illithid/Mind Flayers (I'll shorten it in MFs), basically aliens once commanding a multidimensional empire thanks to their incredible psionic powers and the whole "larva in the eye" and the dude mutating are actually the beginning and the end of their reproductive cycle: infect an host and mutate it into another MF. The dragons... ok, it's a bit more complicated: any self-respecting evil empire has slaves, right? And the MF empire was no different, with their most common slaves being those greenish skinned humanoids, the giths, with generations going by, the giths became resistant/immune (depending of the edition you are playing) to psionic powers and rioted against their slavers. Now, the gith were many BUT they needed help... and here come the dragons, specifically the RED dragons. What you need to understand is that red dragons are never good news, they are the most cruel dragons out there, and proudly so! They actively gloat about being evil incarnate! Red dragons are, however, also prideful to a fault and clever: prideful enough to hate the idea of an empire not ruled by them and clever enough to know challenging an empire of psionics is no easy feat. And here it all ties together: a branch of the giths, the githyanki, made an alliance with the red dragons to bring the MF empire to its knees, and they actually managed to do so. Now the MFs are rare and scattered, but still very much a threat, constantly trying to rebuild their empire, and whenever a MF pokes their ugly squid head out of whatever hole they were hiding in, githyanki and red dragons are ready to remind them why they were hiding in the first place, with EXTREME PREJUDICE... much to the chagrin of anyone caught within blast radius of a very angry fleet of firebreathing cackling humongous psychopaths ridden by equally angry gecko people. Sorry for the long post, I hope this made things a little clearer.

"GO FOR THE EYES BOO! GO FOR THE EYES NNRRAAAAGH!" Funnily enough the mind flayer transformation in the first trailer is actually...tame compared to how it actually goes. Like the way Ceremorphisis is described makes it sound like your skin doesn't so much change as it ends up peeling off to reveal the Mindflayer beneath. And as Gale in game would say, "Tis a fate to be avoided at all costs!" But the Mind Flayers turn you into one of them, you as a person and everything you are dies in the change and their perspective on other races is essentially, "You exist to serve us as cattle exists to serve you."

D&D has a well-established story that has evolved and been fleshed out throughout the years. Many of the races, classes, and creatures such as the Mind Flayer(aka Illithid or the squid heads) have been around for a long time. The concepts behind the parasite implantation are also well known. Likewise, the game Baldur's Gate is located within the Forgotten Realms which is a fantasy region from D&D. BG is based on these same creatures, and locations, and plays with the D&D ruleset. It also has well-established characters and story such as Minsc (a comical and somewhat insane Ranger) and his friend Boo (a Miniature Space Hamster) going back to the first game 25 years ago. Some of my favorite quotes from Minsc in Baldur's Gate: "Take heart fellow adventurers, for you have curried the favor of Boo, the only miniature giant space hamster in the Realm!" "Butt kicking for goodness!" "Go for the eyes, Boo, go for the eyes!" "Cities always teem with evil and decay. Let's give it a good shake and see what falls out!" "Squeaky wheel gets the kick!" "When the going gets tough, someone hold my rodent!" "Boo must have his exercise, lest he bite us all in hard to reach places." and finally; "Jump on my sword while you can, evil... I won't be as gentle!"

So bit of backstory on the second trailer: the person who got the tadpole before the POV character is a githyanki, as are the people who were riding the dragons. They roam the different planes of existence hoarding knowledge and furthering the goals of their lich-queen Vlaakith. Once upon a time, their race were enslaved by the illithid (aka mind flayers, aka squid people), but one of them found they had the power to resist the telepathic influence of the illithid and then that led to the rebellion that set them free. There was also a bit of a civil war among the gith which led to them splitting into the githyanki and the githzerai (not going to go into what exactly it was about as it gets covered in BG3). Anyway, at some point Vlaakith makes a pact with the evil dragon god Tiamat which gives the githyanki who have proven themselves worthy a dragon to ride as they travel the realms. So they weren't there to protect the city, they just showed up because if they find any trace of illithid activity, they will try to wipe it out. Them being interdimensional raiders is also how they open up portals to give chase to the nautiloid (the illithid ship)

Great reaction! These trailers definitely leave you with loads of questions if you don't know the story😅I'm currently at around 75% of the game in my first playthrough on PS5 and let me tell you it's so much fun! There's so much to explore, discover, so many different storylines and not a single fetch or collecting quest that has nothing to do with the characters, story or world. Everything in the game is there for a reason. It's a huge game. I'm like 150 hours in and I'm still far from finish it. The joy of BG3 is the curiosity to explore and solve things on your own style and pace. The game doesn't hold your hand on how to do stuff. Depending on the stats of your characters and those of the companions, you can talk your way out of trouble (and even in some cases, boss fights!). You can do stealth as much as hit on collision. The freedom is yours to approach the conflicts with what you have at your disposal. Also, the characters are such a treat! Not only the companions, but also allies and NPCs here and there. Most people have something to say, a story to share, or something to provide that may even be of use for you and whatever questline you're trying to solve. So talking with everyone and exploring really pays off most of the times. And yes, the game is heavily based on the D&D rules and system. So turn-based combat, rolling the dice for everything that requires a skill check, etc. It's worth checking out if you're into that kind of thing. Also, Larian Studios has a open channel to their fans, listen to them, release hotfixes and patches addressing what the fans let them know that's not working in the game and they have a great sense of humor and love for their project. You can search for them here on youtube and in their official channel you'll find videos with their very colorful way to promote the game and communicate updates and progress (when the game was in early access, which was for 3 years). This was lengthy, sorry🙈

So the squid face guys are called Illithids or more commonly known as Mind flayers and they reproduce kinda like the xenomorphs from aliens in that they implant parasites in other races to make more of them which is what you saw in the second trailer and the first trailer is the chest bursting equivalent of the life cycle. The dragons are not exactly "good" they are red dragons and in d&d they are like the poster boy for bad guys and the dragon riders are a race called githyanki (same race as the one who got the tadpole in the eye) and they're not really good guys either they're kinda space pirates 😂 Would love to see a playthrough of BG3 from you guys (it can be played coop) and if you wanna know who the elven person that saved you is you're gonna have to 😉

They write a world that's deep and the characters actually have some depth to them. Really well done. There are still bugs, but Larion is addressing them. Also, some fun addons to play with (I LOVE modding).

Love this game to bits, I'm a lady of stories. More trailers for you to check out if you're interested - the animated ones, the Game Awards (2022?) trailer, the release teaser trailer... If the 'tiny gerbil' looking misplaced gave you a giggle, that release teaser trailer (with the more romantic scenes) might give you a laugh 😂 Edit: Oh, and the character origin introductions! Make sure you get the one with good audio if you fancy watching it.

@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGamesWow, thank you for replying! Sorry I'm late. In case you'd like to check the character introductions on your own time (or otherwise haha) I'd recommend the one by Vikan Gaming. 'All Origin Character Intros' Yep, this one specifically is what I'd recommend. It's just that one of the most viewed ones has poor audio, for some reason? I gave it a quick look before commenting and thought I'd better warn you 😅 probably because these intros are in the game and some people have better setups than others for capturing footage.

The squid men are "Illithids" (mind flayers), they are known for being highly intelligent and wielding powerful psionic abilities. The tadpoles are inserted into the eye and make their way into the brain where latch on and eat away the brain matter until it matures and replaces the brain. Once it has replaced the brain, the host then undergoes Ceremorphosis, the final stage, which is the transformation to an Illithid. (which is what you saw in the first trailer)

So Baldur's gate, it's a setting within the D&D universe. It's a top down rpg with turn based combat, and easily game of the year, potentially the best rpg to release since the witcher 3. Regardless, it's a must play type of game and being 4 player coop. You two would probably enjoy the time spent in it. I know I loved every minute of my first 150 hour playthrough. And I intend on starting a second playthrough soon. Explaining who the purple elf lady is, is one of the major plot points so would be spoilers, All you know at the start is that you get to create what she looks like and she's your "guardian"

Ceremorphosis is the term for the tadpole to go into the eye and then it devours the brain taking all it's knowledge. If it wasn't obvious this isn't a change like a vampire or lycan, it's more like a Xenomorph from Alien, the person is dead. It then changes the body into another Mindflayer (Illithid for the nerds) which is the term for said mini cthulu's. It's just the way they reproduce, it's nothing related to the soul, in fact supposedly Mindflayers don't have souls at all, which are tangible provable things in DnD. They're basically cosmic beings from another dimension who want to return to their future or old empire where they ruled the multiverse (whether it's the past or future not even they can tell) with the powers of Jean Grey from Xmen, psychic powers, telepathy, floating, force push or grab, ect. Specifically not arcane or magic based.

This is quite honestly one of the best games ever made, it's currently crushing Starfield in player numbers, a game with one of the two biggest publishers in the industry in Bethesda and Microsoft behind it and a game that is probably one oof the most anticipated releases since Cyberpunk 2077 (which you should also react to as the 2.0 patch + Huge expansionis coming out and renewed interest will be there in the week to come). Bethesda and Microsoft so cocksure of themselves they intentionally released on the same day and called them and dismissed Baldur's Gate 3 as a 'second-run Stadia PC RPG' and Larian had to release a month early to adjust and get out of the bigger title's way. But now after Starfield's opening weeks come to a close and a fucking month after Baldur's Gate 3's release this "tiny" game made by a studio 5 times smaller and with a tenth of the financial backing is beating them handily (in concurrent player numbers) and if you try it, it'll be obvious why. It's using a a simplified DnD ruleset. Almost no knowledge of Faerun (the world DnD takes place in) or Baldur's Gate 1/2 is needed to get into the story as it's for the most part a new conflict set-up with some callbacks AND it's also 100% co-op which is rare for an RPG and Larian is unique in the way they allow two players to play their games at once. Their last title, Divinity: Original Sin II was pretty much universally lauded when it came out but this is an improvement over that in almost every way which is pretty fucking incredible for a CRPG, a genre most gamers once considered outdated and for "niche" audiences. Seriously if this doesn't take GOTY 2023 that shit is rigged. PS: It's a space-gerbil

“Second run” means a second wave of release. It’s not meant to be diminutive it’s simply a term meant to mean a rerelease. Microsoft said it wouldn’t have a big impact for game pass was because by the time they’d get the game for game pass it would be well after the PC and Stadia release and a lot of the mainstream buzz around it would die down

Welcome to the main world of Dungeons and Dragons! Here's some brief - and horrifying/metal as hell - context to the Cthulhu-lookin' folks: Those guys are called Illithid, or Mind Flayers. Real big on psychic/psionic power, used to run a huge empire that fell long before the events of this game. The tapole you saw is literally how they reproduce. They implant them in hosts - as you saw - and then the little guy goes to work, eventually transforming its host into another mind flayer in the process you witnessed first, called ceramorphosis. The ship's called a Nautiloid, and is basically like an organic, living mind flayer ship. The riders of the dragons - and the gal that got tadpole'd with the viewer - are called githyanki. Former slaves of the mind flayer empire that made it their whole purpose to exterminate any Illithid they can find. I'm glad you guys enjoyed these trailers! And I genuinely hope you give this game a try; it's a really fun romp and has some great character writing for the most part!

I find it really cool and interesting with the amount of people since Baldur's Gate 3 has come out, that aren't familiar with Mind Flayers. (The Squid people) Which first made an appearance in 1975 for fun Trivia. While elves and dwarves are pretty common elements in fantasy I forget how little exposure Mind Flayers have had over the years despite them being around for half a century. In a nutshell they are one of five things in a DnD setting if I had to choose, that would make most RPG Parties second guess even getting into a fight. Just a single one is rated to be a challenge for a party of four level 8 players, and they are rarely ever alone. moving in groups of 3-5 that often also have a number of minons comprised of one of the many races they have enslaved. Hyper intelligent beings that have developed psychic powers including a ranged mind blast that can stun on impact for 3-12 turns of combat, At will (meaning no limit to uses) Spells like a form of charm that works on all creatures. (AKA Can't attack them, if you fail the save, until attacked first) Levitate, Detect thoughts, Plane shift (Able to teleport to different planes of existence), and even Suggestion, which they can implant ideas into your head and make you believe them. If that wasn't scary enough, in close combat they get 4 tentacle attacks that can latch onto your face if they hit, and if a character hasn't freed themselves and all four are attached on them by the next time the Mind Flayer's turn happens, Player gets one last chance to free themselves or die instantly from brain extraction. The big ship you saw, can also Plane shift essentially as you witnessed, so they travel the realms and spend their days looking for new slaves and host vessels and with the abilities I mentioned one bad roll can really turn fatal pretty quickly.

The Guardian that saved you....your question is something that all the characters ask themselves for a while. Through the questline, you'll learn who they are and why they saved you. Taht first trailer shows Ceramorphosis, which is how Illithids create more of themselves. It takes about seven days after the tadpole is inserted in the eye, and it's horrifying and painful. It's all part of D&D lore, but this is the first videogame that has focused on this bit. It's an excellent game, and I highly recommend it. Excellent story, with real, sometimes devastating choice consequences.

The illithid, or Mind Flayers are very evil creatures and the humanoids riding the red dragons are the Githyanki, another evil race but they have severe beef with the illithid. For me BG3 is one of the best video games in history. In the first video what you see is the process of becoming a Mind Flayer (one of the many D&D monsters) accelerated, it usually lasts several days but is just as terrible. It occurs when a Mind Flayer larva is introduced into the host's skull, usually inserted through the eye as seen in the second video. Then it begins to literally devour the victim's brain, later it alters the body and when it's all over all that remains is only a mind flayer, in body and mind. Mind Flayers are part of the group of beings called aberrations, a type of beings that come from the Far Realm, something like a place beyond the universe where Lovercraftian things dwell, they are among the least terrible and most understandable things in that "place" . Mind Flayers also feed on the brains of intelligent beings, the tentacles are to grab the head while they make their way through the skull until they reach the brain. The Mind Flayers once ruled the D&D universe but were defeated by a rebellion of their former slaves, the Gith (the green-skinned woman in the second video is a Gith who are split into two groups Githzerai and Githyanki, both of whom are eternal enemies of the Mind Flayers whom they kill whenever they can). Since they are aberrations of the Far Realm (a "place" usually considered beyond the D&D multiverse of which Toril, the world where the game takes place, is a part. Faerun is the continent of Toril where Baldur's Gate is) this could have been in the distant past or being in a future that has not yet happened. The Mind Flayers of the present are descendants of time travelers who try to prevent the end of their empire, which has not yet come. If this sounds really strange, it's possible that I'm wrong about some parts of the lore and they are also beings from the Far Realm, where concepts like time and space are more optional suggestions than anything else. They are alien and incomprehensible. The Mind Flayer are perhaps the most understandable of all the aberrations and that is not saying much. As the main character is fully customizable in the cinematics where is present, is never shown. That's why they use first person in that scene. The spaceship is a nautiloid, a Spelljammer ship used by the Midn Flayers. Spelljamer is a D&D setting that is basically magically powered ships traveling between the various worlds of the D&D multiverse. Many species besides Mind Flayers use spelljammer ships, of which there are many different kinds. The city attacked is the titular Baldur's Gate. The reason why the nautiloid is attacked by dragons is that the leader of the Gith made a pact with Tiamat, goddess of evil dragons (red dragons are evil by default in D&D) during the rebellion against the Mind Flayers (also know as Illithid). She was never seen again, but since then a number of red dragons serve the Githyanki and help them in their fights against the Mind Flayers. The Githyanki are not protecting the city and they couldn't care less, but they will take any opportunity to kill Mind Flayers. When the nautiloid disappears at the end of the second video it ends up in Avernus, the first layer of D&D's Hell. From bad to worse. BG3 offers the possibility of playing both with one several pre-generated characters and with one character entirely created by the player. The chosen character takes on the role of main protagonist during the game. The latest trailer presents some characters and gameplay of the game.

Adore this game. If you're not used to isometric (high angle camera and click-to-move) games then the gameplay might not appear that impressive at first glance. But it's genuinely some of the most satisfying combat I've ever experienced. The story is pretty good, but more importantly, the characters are all wonderfully-realized and so lovingly crafted. These aspects alone are worth the price of admission. On a meta level, this game's and its studio's underdog story is a marvel in itself. That this game exists in this day and age is miraculous. Like any game, it has flaws, and even its strengths won't appeal to everyone. But even if it's not your cup of tea, BG3 is worth celebrating.
