05:21 Iain pretty much nailed it here. There are studies which show as little as 6 sets of Leg Extensions burn through 40% of the local glycogen. So a drastic increase in reps would do it.

there are also studies that say the damage they cause far outweighs the benefits. so much so that many physiologist recommend eliminating entirely from your routine. the damage done to your knees is proven but some still refuse to use alternatives....and there are plenty.

Yeah i was thinking the same. Because HIIT cardio is very rapid and low rest. As opposed to HIIT cardio, if take for example a very extended walk (like 3 hours) vs a 10 min HIIT session, I would say they both have the same intensity in the end point

I don’t know if someone already said it in the comments, but there is a word for what Fouad is describing. It’s only been around for a couple of years. It’s called « intensitivity ». It’s how close from failure you are pushing a set and the scale is 1-10. 10 would mean you reached failure. 9.5 would mean you completed the last rep but couldn’t even start another one. 9 would mean you left one rep in the tank, and so on. « Intensity » is the % of the 1 R.M.

What you are debating about around 1:50:00-2:00:00 mark is proximity to failure which can be achieved with the highest intensity (1 RM) or lower intensity (5/10/15 RM).
@carnivoreblues13313 жыл бұрын
3:14 "is there a way my muscle can grow but I still look flatter?" Yes, I think with how many different muscle fibers there are, and how some are only recruited the heavier you go, and if you are now 'exclusively' doing higher reps in the upper rep range of growth, but you have not done this before, then many of the muscle fibers you have right now, won' t be recruited as they exist for higher tension/strength and that is how they were made, if that makes sense. So perhaps the body is also storing glycogen in the muscle fibers you are using, the upper rep ones, not the low rep ones? and that's is what you are seeing? The low rep strong ones, unused, in a low glycogen state because you are not using them? And the higher rep fibers are 'unseen' because you haven't used them before? I think if you did both a high rep range and low rep range workout, they would look full again, if that makes sense. Just my 2 cents (and guess).

Fouad…you’re spot on about training light with more reps leaving you the soreness and fullness but it goes away faster and how heavy training you don’t get the soreness but you get the fullness a lot longer. Ian had a good point about the CNS being taxed by heavy training. I used to power lift in competition but never got that soreness except for joint pain and stiffness when I competed in deadlifting. But, I’ve found hitting small body parts several times a week, like a triple drop set of biceps during every workout along with claves and abs and maybe a set or two of tri’s, really made them grow a lot faster. I think the older you get, the heavy compound lifts should be taken away, especially the squat, at least going really heavy. Like now, I don’t bench 4 plates or 3 plates, 2 plates , 1 plate pull off triple drop set, but when I saw Keon train with Flex and he had him doing 20 reps I went back to 1 to 2 plates with 30 sec rest and I’ll switch between traditional grip and close grip. I also think the machines these days are much better then we think.
@oliverfox78163 жыл бұрын
Also the Schoenfield studies and articles are really interesting regarding using low vs. high reps and how underlying mechanisms are the same, but I'm pretty sure most studies have found that utilising both rep ranges in a combined approach is better than just focusing on one. Have to agree with Foaud on kevin- early kevin had great quads/hams and even glutes were in. He did alot of the euro tour shows which were watery but thats from trying to peak 4-5 tomes in a week. Also he didn’t train half the year so the fact that he is at that level is beyond nuts. Fully committed Kevin would have been Mr O

and more importantly he is he had other hobbies, got off gear totally 6 months per yr. Kevin was known as one of the most hyper responders ever. Guess the other one? Flex. Kevin used 25% of what these guys do now....in 16 after 13 wo competing or taking gear, just the simple fact his side chest and his most muscular came looking as good as they did was amazing. It took other guys way longer, and some gave up trying when away from the stage for even 2 yrs... never mind 13.

as i've always understood it in terms of workout programming, there's 3 aspects: frequency, intensity, and volume. in this context, intensity is defined by load in terms of how much you're lifting. you're thinking of just intensity as a thing on it's own in terms of effort level, but the definition is what it is for programming's sake because the conventional wisdom is all 3 can't go up at the same time. which is why volume vs intensity is the age-old debate. just my own dumbass 2 cents. loved the podcast!

The discussion on intensity vs density was very good. I've been confused when people say intensity because I use the physics definition of intensity like Ben. I think a better way to describe training at a higher rep range is just "training to/near failure" to describe "intense" sets at higher rep ranges (i.e. 6-8, 12-15). I do see your point Fouad because people also use intensity to describe strong emotions or feelings, like you said "intensely confused" or "intensely sad". Great Podcast as always.

I think the flatness Fouad is talking about is linked to intensity and temporary water retention. I noticed when I used to do sprinting that my muscles would fill up with water in the few hours after and I’d look incredibly full due to the stress I’d put on my muscles and body - a similar thing happens with lifting but I’d never noticed it to quite the same extreme as when I was doing 100 metre sprints. Similarly, lifting heavier weights likely causes more tears and leads to greater (temporary) water retention as the part of the body’s way of healing, which is why the muscle just looks fuller after the workout.
