When I was in school my teacher was a friend of the production designer Alex McDowell so when this movie released he came to do a lecture. I’m still amazed by this movie’s faithfulness visually to the source and how hard they worked to fit everything in. I seem to remember McDowell talking about how all of the Night Owl books were fully printed with text under the covers because that was the level of detail they were wanting.

Zack Snyder has an incredible talent and eye when it comes to moving images, and here he had such a dense material to build on its elevated Watchmen to something more than a comic and a movie. When I read it I see and hear the movie in my head and when I watch the movie I remember so much from Alan Moore’s comic, it a wonderful mythos of an alternative history . . .

Another fun, subtle detail is that when Adrian Veidt is around his friends in private like Nite Owl he speaks with a very slight German accent. You can hear it best when Dan goes to see him at Veidt tower. He speaks in a more American accent the rest of the time when in public. In the comic he is of German origin and I think he masks his accent because at the time WWII was very fresh in people’s minds and he wanted to distance himself from them as much as possible.

Those playing cards are very specific. They are a deck designed so the magician can accurately predict what card you are holding (the patern on the back is unique to each card). This kind of deck plays well into the symbolism of fatalism and gives someone the illusion of control while orchestrating events. 24:03

Even though we never learn exactly what happened to Hooded Justice, Ozymandias believed it was the Comedian who killed him. Ozymandias was doing his own investigations after Hooded Justice died and he discovered that the Comedian had been contracted by the US Government to track down Hooded Justice but had allegedly reported failure in doing so to his employers. Ozymandias suspected this was a lie and that Comedian killed him off anyway, having still been bitter about Hooded Justice interrupting his rape of Silk Spectre years earlier.

However Jeremy Irons was fabulous in the series

I don't think the other superheroes have a "degree of superpowers". They are definitely overpowered and far from realistic, but I always thought it was just a stylization choice as opposed to having them having superpowers as a key point of arc (just like Batman supposedly has no superpowers but can always do superhuman shit. So I have to disagree on it impacting the Dr. Manhattan overall arc of being the first "true" superhero to show up.

Really good breakdown; seriously, great job getting MT on here. Just a couple of notes: a) the scene with The Comedian and Nite Owl was an anti-masks protest, not a Vietnam protest; b) Twice in this vid you read the clock face wrong. The clock during Nixon's 3rd term victory is being moved to 10 minutes to midnight, not 5. Whereas the watch face just before the big blue bomb goes off reads 5 seconds to midnight, not 10; c) As well as the possible gay thing, Ozymandias' computer file marked "boys" could also be a reference to "The Boys"; another hugely popular, deeply violent comic book story about the dark side of a world where superheroes exist.

Great choice here to breakdown The Watchman, I love this movie. Excellent job by MT with this one. I never understood the lack of support for Snyder on this one but as the years have gone by I’ve realized that for some reason many people who don’t like Snyder’s films feel it’s necessary to go out of their way to show how and why they dislike them. This is a very tough story to put to film and he does it very well. I really like the show on HBO, wondering if they will ever follow up with a second season

Great video, but one minor complaint. It's freighter (pronounced fr8er) as in the word freight plus -er; A ship that carries freight. Not frighter, as you pronounce it. Also, at 22:40, I think that's an anti-masked hero demonstration, not an anti-Vietnam demonstration (the Vietnam war being over in the story at this point) as you can see by the signs they're carrying.

I disagree with the "superpowered watchmen" critique so many people have about this movie: in the film it is still never stated that these characters are "superpowered", for what we know they are simply well trained people in peak human condition, not superhuman. You may object that their strength is indeed represented as superhuman, but to me that is just a way to represent the fights symbolically, either accentuating the brutality of some of these fights, or to represent the adrenaline of fighting again for the retired heroes. Of course it is different than the comic, but that's the thing: it's a different medium, and within the cinematic medium I think these changes make perfect sense. To me a much more problematic change is the "squid" change, because that directly impacts Ozymandias's plan: the whole point of the squid was to unify the world against a common threat and for that plan to work flawlessly it needed to be a 100% alien threat; that's why it couldn't be Dr. Manhattan, who was American! In the movie it was basically an internal terrorist attack, meaning that other nations would most likely either not care at all or consider America itself a threat! Once again I understand the change for cinematic reasons (a giant squid would have looked too cheesy in live action and/or it would have required additional costs to realize), but it could have simply been changed to an alien spaceship shooting the city like in Independence Day and it would have worked just the same with no additional special effects beside designing the ship itself. In fact the more I think about it the more I'm convinced that the ship attack is a better plan as a whole, as it truly depicts the aliens as active threats instead of just plopping a dead squid on our heads for no apparent reason.

That was great - lots of stuff I never picked up on. Don't agree with the comedian and Ozymandias' 'superpowered' fighting skills negating the arrival of Dr Manhattan though. I never really considered them to be super powered - not that I fancy trying to punch a chunk out of a wall anytime soon - but always considered them to be just a lot better than the average brawler found in a comics universe - much like Batman.

I agree with this sentiment. Especially since not only are they successful heroes, but there's other elements of super tech to the world. Rorscharch's mask, and all of the later Nightowl's manufactured bat-gadgets.Even the source material plays up that The Comedian was built like a weight lifter and he must have been attacked by two guys to have his apartment thrashed and been thrown out that heavy plate glass window. Peaks of human prowess.

One thing about Zandt's death, and I can't immediately recall if the film ever touched upon it, but homophobia was not the primary motivation behind her death in the comic, which claims that her murderer was a former villain whom Zandt herself had nearly killed in the past. This could be another example of the film changing elements from the original comic, or it could be that the homophobia was more of a secondary motivation.

I've never seen anything going into the symbolism of owls in superhero mythology. Athena, Greek goddess of war and wisdom, had the owl as her symbol. She was also the patron of both Hercules (or Herakles, if you will) and Odysseus, arguably the Superman and Batman of the Greek mythology. Hercules had great strength, but was only able to complete his Trials by using his mind and courage, as he was often up against problems that strength alone couldn't solve. Meanwhile, Odysseus often used cleverness and trickery, as well as occasional gadgetry, to achieve his goals (the Trojan Horse being his craft, but only after sneaking into Troy to steal the Palladium, a gift from the Gods that ensured the city could never fall.) Athena was also the God of crafts, which seems odd to pair with war, until you think of characters exactly like Batman or, in this case, Night Owl, who craft gadgets to aid them in their war on crime! Athena shared War in her portfolio with Ares. But Ares was a dumb brute. He represented the unpleasant, bloody, brutal side of war. Athena represented the aspects of warfare that drove the ancient peoples to build walls, engage in metallurgy, design siege weaponry. Today, she would be considered the Goddess of Bravery and Texhnological Innovation. I honestly hope this diatribe was in mind when Night Owl was being created, and it wasn't just "Meh, owls and bats both hunt at night. This is good enough for my ripoff... er, allegory."

I am pretty sure the rally that Night Owl and Comedian went to break up was an anti masked-hero rally not an anti Vietnam rally. Especially since it took place WAY after Vietnam was over (As remarked by Comedian - who was in Vietnam until the war was over, when he stated he loved being back and working on American soil again). Also as you keenly point out, Vietnam seems to have been annexed and made the 51st state so I don't think people are still protesting the war there
