We're looking at the controversy around Assassin's Creed Shadows and the general response to this Ubisoft game. Yasuke has been a big point of debate and we truly believe there's more going on with this game and the reception than meets the eye. #gaming #assassinscreed #assassinscreedshadows

As a person who actually studies Japanese culture and history my general consensus is its possible. weather it happened or not is irrelevant, because that cannot be confirmed or denied due to lack of evidence, and Furthermore people are not exactly in the know, about how Yasuke could have existed, and how weird it may sound that indeed it is entirely 100% possible. let me explain. Yasuke using what we know about him, came to Japan sometime in the 17th century, he was brought by jesuit priests and these same priests held court with Oda, Oda noticed Yasuke possibly through fascination at how this "dark man" was well here in his court. Oda also probably noticed Yasuke's stature and reported height of over 6 feet, and likely employed Yasuke For that purpose alone. Yasuke being a joke is rather unlikely mostly because I know that the one thing, The japanese will keep a person around that is foreign to them for their usefulness (this is seen in william Adams case who inspired the events of shogun) letting someone like Yasuke slip through his fingers would be a grievous mistake. Yasuke holding the honor of Being oda's Number two I hold my doubts to however, mainly because I believe that Yasuke was probably in Oda's employ for a maximum of 6 months before Oda's death. Yasuke also reportedly worked under Oda's son as well, but after Oda's son also kicked the bucket, its said that yasuke was then taken back by the Portuguese, likely by my opinion taken someplace else in the globe or simply being a shiphand. This is just my findings, Be free to compare and contrast.

@_MrTrue 19 күн бұрын
This is something I commented the other day: Yasuke was a real person, yes, but he was not a Samurai. Not much is even known about Yasuke because he was mentioned so little in historical documentation, in all seriousness it could probably fit on a page. He appeared in Japan in 1581 brought in by Jesuit missionary Alessandro Valignano. He was given to Nobunaga as a gift because Nobunaga seemed to take such interest in his skin. He had him scrubbed down because he thought he was covered in ink, he was amused to see that it was his natural skin color. It was said he was taken by Nobunaga and given a house to live in, a ceremonial short sword, and a stipend. A few things to note here. He was allowed to live in the house but it was not stated he was given ownership of the land nor the house. In fact, the house he lived in was in all likelihood on Nobunaga's estate, it would be like giving his own property to Yasuke. The ceremonial short sword he was given, a wakizashi, is not a full sized Katana wielded solely by Samurai. During this time, commoners were allowed to own and wear wakizashi. Only Samurai were given a full sized katana (tanto) and allowed to wear the tanto in public. It was worn exclusively by Samurai in a pair with the wakizashi and together they are known as daishō. This is fundamental to one given the title of Samurai and Yasuke is recorded not receiving a full length Samurai tanto. Lastly, stipends weren't exclusively given to Samurai. Nobunaga was sort of eccentric and didn't necessarily follow all the traditions he was "supposed to". In the Shinchō Kōki, there are several instances of stipends being given to non Samurai class people. It's notable that the Kanji for stipend is identical in all its uses for Samurai and non Samurai in the Shinchō Kōki, meaning they were identical. Yasuke receiving a stipend is no indication he was a Samurai. There is no historical documentation of Yasuke being made to carry out orders for Nobunaga nor was it documented that he trained in combat. It was said that "He was sometimes made to carry Nobunaga-sama's tools". He was also seen as entertainment and an oddity by Nobunaga. Nobunaga had a fascination of all things exotic and foreign. He would parade him around Kyoto and took great pleasure in his ability to cause people to be shocked by his size and appearance. Rumors spread among the people that he could be made a tono (lord), but were not said in seriousness, as Nobunaga never showed any other intention other than to flaunt. There had been plenty of time passed at this point to grant Yasuke a title (surname). However, a surname was never given to him. It is practically unheard of for any bushi to not be given a title, but a Samurai would certainly be given one. His last appearance was at the incident in Honnoji. After Nobunaga had been defeated, it was said that Yasuke was found by one of Akechi's men in a report from Luís Fróis. It was said that Yasuke had been fighting for his life for quite some time. One of Akechi's soldiers was able to convince Yasuke to surrender his sword, and Yasuke obliged. When asked what to do with him, Akechi said that (i might have to c3ns0r this part, it's actually worse than this) to spare him because he was "best1al and knows nothing, nor is he Ja=pan3se, so do not ki1_1 him, and place him in the custody at the cathedral of Padre in 1nd1a". This is the last record of Yasuke. It is in all likelihood he was promptly returned to the Jesuits and be placed once again in their serv1tude. From setting foot in Japan to his departure, 15 months had passed. Not once in that very short time was anything ever said to the effect that he was bushi nor a Samurai. On the contrary, it seemed as though he was kept as entertainment to Nobunaga, nothing more. Yet, here we are.

The difference is that this time around, the studio is claiming historical accuracy. Something that has not been done in the AC franchise up until now. I don't care if they included Rosa Parks fighting on top of a t-rex in feudal Japan and called it Assassin's Creed: Penis, as long as they didn't claim it to be historically accurate. Which they did. That is the problem.

"But I dont want to be forced to play as a woman, I want someone I cant relate to" You cant expect every single game out there to cater to what you prefer or relate to. It reminds me a lot of a concept we in my country call "jentelus" (Being scared of girls and not wanting anything to do with them, usually a stage some small children goes through). And personally I dont think making him a full-on samurai instead of a simple retainer is disrespectful. I think with a person like Yasuke, taking a liberty like this isnt that bad. From where I'm standing it seems like the exhaustion of constantly watching dei and esg ruin franchises that made good products has made people more skeptical and aggressive, I'm not defending the racist rhetoric, that is just childish retaliation were well past that if you ask me. The fact that hes possibly gay in the game was the cherry on top though, people are tired and that's making them angry and suspicious of anything that has the smell of forced diversity. People loved afro samurai and stuff because at no point were you going to feel like there was forced messaging, its badass and cool to have black characters and diverse casts but its cringe to only put people in those places to score social brownie points, it's happened too many times to not immediately think "this is forced" at a glance. In conclusion, I predict the game is going to hyper focus on forced contrived messaging, it's going to at best allude to yasuke being gay and at worst give him some lame love scene with a guy with little grace or even proper buildup. Assassins creed has wandered far off and is expecting fans to wait around while they bumble around trying to find their way back, most will not.

This whole controversy is nothing to take seriously tbh. Aside from the usual bigots and grifters, the only somewhat real argument is how tired the public is getting of politics being forced into every bit of media. But I even find that argument to be silly in this context, as like you said, we've only seen a single cinematic trailer. This is just another instance of Americans being trigger happy with their politics... As for Yasuke's sexuality, that whole "Yasuke is gay" article was taken out of context for rage bait. The truth is that every RPG AC game after Origins let the player choose their sexuality. If you want to be an accurate Yasuke that was probably straight, you can do that! The point is to have player agency and choice. Overall this controversy will end up like Hogwarts Legacy: forgotten in a month, and will probably help the game sell better lol As usual, great video Jay! Can't wait to see your review on Shadows :-)

Yasuke was a real person, yes, but he was not a Samurai. To add, There is a novel by Thomas Lockley that has a very short historically accurate account of Yasuke's history and then a substantially long novel, which is essentially completely fictional, that accompanies it. It is the unfortunate claim from Lockley that his novel is the "True Story..." of Yasuke that the debate continues today. I think it's fair to assume that creating a novel that is some hundreds of pages long recounting the life of Yasuke, the legendary Samurai, from sources that amount to essentially a paragraph is a stretch. Yet, his novel is constantly referenced as a source by those claiming Yasuke's status as a Samurai.

Okay so 5 minutes in is when the point you're sorta, and everyone else who's sympathetic to Ubisoft, is missing. This time around Ubisoft is claiming historical accuracy. That is the real problem. 19 minutes in. You'd take an issue with making a historical character something he is not. Then why not take issue with making him a Samurai? I know your opinion is that it's hotly debated, and that's not entirely wrong because it currently is. However, the tiny little bit of what we know of Yasuke definitely does not paint the picture of him being a Samurai. It's a massive stretch to claim he was a Samurai both in the past and today. For the longest time it was the opinion that he wasn't, now all of a sudden Ubisoft claims certainty. Did you see what happened to the Wiki page? It really is Lockley's fault that there is a debate at all... 26:50 It's not about the trailer entirely. It is about most of the stuff surrounding it. The choice to choose Yasuke as an mc was not made on accident. Have you looked into the team behind AC Shadows? Oh man...it's rough dude. The worst offender is the "historian" behind Yasuke, S4ch1 Sc|-|m1dt-Hor1 (yyoootube has deleted comments of me even saying her name). People were mad about her being hired for a long time before the trailer released. Her background is well, disgusting in my opinion. She focuses (and glamorizes) historical relationships between generationally separated m3n and b0ys. There is a word that describes her. Let's just say people knew Yasuke would be gay well before the trailer dropped. Made me chuckle towards the end there. I obviously disagree very much with a lot of what you two said, and that's okay. It's okay to disagree. I do think you guys are maybe not digging into this quite deep enough. Hopefully you look into what I said and maybe go over Yasuke's history again. It shouldn't take long there is only a page worth of it (joke). Anyway, pleasantly surprised by the video.

It's not a massive stretch to claim he was at all? Since the Japanese themselves have depicted yasuke as a samurai in historical games multiple times before ubisoft Even knew the guy existed again not saying he is one but its definitely not a stretch to think he was one, and to see ubisoft " claiming historical accuracy" you literally have to go out of your way to look the the description on the one sentence that one person could've wrote, there not shoving it in your face you actively have to look for it for them to claim historical accuracy

@@redninja3056 Sure they have depicted him many times, as fiction. According to historical documentation of his life, it is quite a stretch. I think you're referring to Lockley's novel that I mentioned. It is indeed a stretch to take one paragraph of source material and make it into a "true story". Ubisoft has on many occasions made statements that their portrayal of Yasuke is historically accurate. I would have been fine if they had a t-rex with a laser gun, as long as they didn't claim it was historically accurate for the first time in the entire franchise.

Game can be just fine, i haven't been a big fan of AC in a while, found origins to be interesting enough while odyssey and Valhalla to be incredibly bloated and bland. Complaining about the existence of Yasuke because of "historical accuracy" is stupid, but i never saw that as the point. There are obviously straight up racist takes out there. But in the end, after countless products forcing their inclusion in in the past few years, it's just obvious at this point. Who knows maybe there's a couple big Yasuke fans and they genuinely thought this was the best way to approach the story. But for a franchise basically known for "play X character from X country at X time" , i doubt this was the only way to approach it. Meeting Yasuke would have been much better as a side quest, like the Da Vinci ones with Ezio. I never even liked the dual main character thing that they do these days. They already struggle to make me care about one, don't know why they are so afraid to make another "Ezio". On top of that the style of the game just looks so eh these days if you told me that some of these screenshots from the game was like a Hibana Sledge bundle from siege i would believe you. Wales is part of Great Brittan after all and there were British settlements and I'm sure many of them and the British ships in the region include Welsh settlers or crewmembers while AFAIK there were no African settlements in Japan. 1st.... is not really about him being black like u said, and people need to understand AC games as a whole to understand whats happening 2nd.... no body cares if he is real samurai or not if Ubi stop keep saying that he is a real history figure, which is fine beside the first legendary black samurai part. I mean is a game, and Im not even saying he was not a samurai, cause he can be, it is possible, so as a game character that makes sense, but saying that he acalcally was one in real life, I mean come on. The bottom line is don't say that he actually was in real life unless they have evidence that he is or not in this case, the fact people are still debating means there are not enough evidence to say that he was or wasn't a samurai, like no body is debating is Albert Einstein a scientist or not. 3rd .... all the main characters in other AC games are all locos or at least representing the time and place, no matter male or female, but Japan and Yasuke (black flag is about the sea and pirate, like one piece, cause most pirates of the Caribbeans are not Caribbeans since their boat are not that good, people around the word especially the Europes go the Caribbeans to to rob other people, shocker right? and for Ezio, I think it is weird why people think that is ok, maybe because of that he is the only one who have 3 games, more like spiderman homecoimg, Far from home, and no way home in different areas, for him is more focused on him instead of the region?) 4th .... all the main characters in other AC games are made up, none of them are real characters but Yasuke ... 5th .... many details of the architectures, outfits, cultures and among other things in other AC games are at least 70% accurate and sometime more like in Paris but Japan, many are just dead wrong in a 4 mins trailer.... just using the room in the trailer for ex which is even shorter - the door's(しょうじ) window is clear not made of paper since light can't even go through that, the floor's(たたみ) shape is way off, they are more of a rectangle shape than squre and way to small, the setting positions, sitting poses, the design of the oufits, the clan markings, just f everything.......... in 4 minutes trailer..... what a go....... and that's only in the room, there's are also the position of the katana (no body ever put that on their back especially a female spy which is what nija is and walking on street during the day...basically telling all the people there she is a Kunoichi), armor ( for Yasuke to wear that armor he have to be not just a samurai but the best, not meaning he's best of fighting, just social stats), helmet( no body pput that helmet straight on, there is something in between to protect head), and wearing that on the street, and many other obvious errors which do not happen in all the other AC games....this used to be something they can show off with different videos even, guess japan is not worse the trouble of doing some basic research? 6th .... They said they want to use a non japnese eyes to see japan (the wording omg lol), why tho? why no need other non-native eyes to see other places and their cultures, why just Japan? 7th .... worst part is they can get things in other countries pretty accurate and not replaceing the main male representations of the regions that they are doing, if there are both male and female options. It's like they are not even trying with Japan. The bottom line is, this is a franchise, if the AC games before all using historical figures as maincharacters, all got the details horribly wrong and have none native main characters replacing the main character that are representing the region, then fine, they can get this wrong and use a black main character for Japan, no biggie, who cares cause that's what they do, but that's not the case is it. I'm pretty sure that's what racism means, you know treating one race/culture different than the others? and in the name of diversity as well....

1 out of the 13 Assassin's Creed games where the protagonist is not native (or relevant such as Black Flag and Rogue) to the country and setting because they were traveling, right.. good job trying to defend why the protagonist is not native to the country, such a far reaching defence. Did you expect Ezio to stay in Italy forever? Not to mention, why can't I play a native male character? Why do women get the privilege? Then again, with that jawline can easily be mistaken for a man. Even AI couldn't desern the gender. But that just exposes forced DEI/ESG/Woke etc. If I get the choice to play a male character, I would choose it over the female because I am a man who wants to be immersed in the character. I'm not one of those people who picks female characters just to check out the backside every minute and then justify that they would rather look at a female's backside instead of a male. Weird because Yasuke is a complementary character to the actual Ninja woman. Like how Michael Angelo or whatever was to ezio, you can just play as him cause it’s a game. Yasuke is not the assassin in this game.

@@radekbejbl1 I mean she's not that big its just that her kit is massive, what I mean is that she's wearing a lot but its not hiding the fact that she's still a woman. Also her jawline could just be an angle thing or a different rendering from the cinematic trailer because there are times where she looks more feminine in the trailer and certain promotional pieces. It could also be the hairstyle, hair changes a lot man and if your able to change Naoe's hair than that can have an impact. If you search up Naoe's concept art you can see that she had a different hairstyle, she had a bun. But my general observation of Naoe's design is that she's just a tomboy, which is fine. As for the ghosts and goblins. I'm not a big fan of these... high fantasy elements being put into this franchise. This game is being developed by Ubisoft Quebec who made Odyssey which had these high fantasy elements... so seeing things like Oni's and stuff in Shadows is very likely which I despise the thought. All I wish for is that these are at the very least hallucinations and not actually existing because that's what bothers me most with Odyssey. Medusa, Minotaur, cyclops, and the sphinx are all actually existing creatures in Assassins Creed Lore which goes against with what the Franchise initially taught that things as super natural as those creatures are simply misinterpretations.

however you feel about "KZbin Historians" The Metatron has a goodtake on it like you in that "theres not enough real text or evidence" the "Source" for Yasuke being a samurai is this book called Black Samurai or whatever but its a narrative fiction novel that everyone and even the author is pushing as FACT despite it being nothing of the sort. Thats my issue. That actual fan fiction from some dude is now being called fact by Ubisoft and everyone else. Clowns.

I want someone to explain to me how if they did use a Japanese lead character how this game would differ from rise of ronin or ghost of Tsushima or wo long, Ubisoft isn’t going to do anything new that past games haven’t already done.

You tried to use Revelations to help your argument, but it worked against you, because Revelations was the end of Ezio's trilogy. It had a justified reason for him to be there, but you two are too ignorant and uninformed to know better apparently. There's also multiple times where you are hypocritical in this video.

@@Djamp_htx ok this is my argument for it. It was either that or make a random Japanese samurai. Which could also work. But this story is interesting. He was a legend. And the fact of a black man in Japan that did exist that had the strength of 10 men that’s awesome. And a LOT of dialogue and story options behind it. Plus it gives a perfect way for the templars and assassins to come back. Plus you play as a Japanese shinobi. If they made both of them black that would have been different. But it also brings in an interesting dynamic between the two. Plus we get to experience Japan just as he did for the first time and that’s what ubi said was part of the enticing part. Plus I care wayyyyyy more about the story than who I play as. Most of the assassins we have played as haven’t been the nationality of the place we play.
